LESSON 5: LANGUAGE FOCUS

* AIM: : By the end of the period, students will be able to:

- Pronounce the stress in three- syllable words correctly

- Review and practise using all types of conditional sentences

* Teaching aids: poster, poster

PROCEDURE

** Warmer: (15mins) Recognizing syllables (poster)

- Ask students to put the words into two groups

- Ask students to read aloud the words

- Elicit from students the syllables of the words

-> Lead in: The stress in three-syllable words

September, family, physical Information, economic, photography Education, secondary, compulsory

I Pronunciation

1 Activity 1: Listen and repeat:

- Hang on a flipchart of the stress in four-syllable words on the board

- Introduce the pronunciation to the students

- Ask Ss to listen to the tape and rpeat the words then read aloud them

- Elicit from the students some general rules:

Notes:

- Những từ kết thúc tận cùng bằng: ic, sion, tion thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2

tính từ sau ra trước.Ngoại trừ từ televvision rơi vào âm tiết đầu

Eg: photoGRAphic, eduCAtion, inforMation

- Những từ kết thúc tận cùng bằng: ce, cy,ical, ty, phy, gy thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3 tính từ sau ra trước.

Eg: phoTOgraphy, ecoLOgical, possiBIlity

2 Activity 2: Practise reading aloud the sentences.

- Ask students to work in pairs to find out the stress in the four syllable words

- Play the tape, ask students to read after the tape

- Ask some Ss to read the aloud the sentences

- Check students’ pracitice and give feedback

II Grammar:

Review the conditional sentences

- Ask students to remind of the structures, the rules of conditional sentences

* Type 1: If + S + V simple present, S + will/ shall + (Bare infi)

Use: To express a possible condition and a probable result in the future.

*Type 2: If + S + V (simple past), S + would/ should/could+ Bare infi

Use : To express an unreal condition / situation in the present or future.

Note: “were” is used instead of “ was” in conditional sentence type 2 in formal English

* Type 3: If + S + had(not) + V(3/ed) , S + would / could/ should+ have + V(3/ed)

Use : - Used for unreal situations in the past

- Used for actions that did not happen in the past

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences using conditional sentence type 1(textbook)

Steps:

- Give some cues on the board and guide students to do the task

- Ask students to do the task individually and then exchange the answer to check

- Go around, listen and help them if necessary

- Call on some Ss to give the answers

Word cues:

2 you / be / 10 minutes late

3 You / not / be / allow / to take / the entrance exam

4 You / not / allowed / submit your/ application form

5 You / not / be able to/ get into/ the examination room

Keys:

2 You come late/are ten minutes late.

3 You will not be able to take

4 You won’t be able to/allowed to submit your application form 5.You won’t be able to get into the examination room.

Exercise 2: Express these situations using conditional sentence type II

- Run through the situations

- Ask Ss to do exercise individually and then exchange the answers to check

- Move around to help if necessary

- Call on some Ss to read their answers aloud

- Correct mistakes and give feedback

Keys:

2 If Sarah liked school, she would study hard.

3 I could/would do the test if it were not too difficult.

4 Peter would read a lot if he had more time/ found the time.

5 If I spoke Korean, I could translate it

6 If they weren’t afraid of flying, they would travel a lot.

- Ask Ss to do exercise individually and then exchange the answers to check

- Move around to help if necessary
