After you have gained some experience and you desire to create your own designs, here is a hint: I n general, you should cut your cords i n a ratio of 5 to 1 That is, cut each cord 5 yards long for every yard of desired finished length T h i s will help you know how
to cut your cords when creating your own patterns Many kinds of cord can be used There are many new synthetic cords available which are easy to use, and very beautiful I t is usually important to choose a cord
of similar thickness to the cord used in the pattern B u t
in " L a Tour," we used cords of two different ses to achieve two different effects Here we had to slightly modify the pattern to accommodate the dis-similar thicknesses of cord Use your imagination, and
thicknes-be daring

Materials:
500 yards thick white cord or 4/120,6/65, or 6/72 jute
1 3 " soldered ring (8-lOmm)
1 7" ring or hoop
1 19" ring
1 '/4" thick 24" diameter beveled edge piece of
glass
8 IV2" wood beads (optional)
Step No 1: Cut the cords in this manner:
24 cords 14 yards each
40 cords 2V2 yards each
2 cords 3 yards each
27 cords 2 yards each
5 cords IV2 yards each
Step No 2: Wrap the 3" ring with the 2 yard cord, and tie
an overhand knot with the ends Fold all the 14 yard
cords over the ring Place a 3 yard cord on each side and
make a 9" square knot loop as shown in Technique
Section Be sure to include in the loop the 2 ends of the
cord that wrapped the ring Tie a wrap with a 2 yard cord
covering the bottom of the square knot loop
Step No 3: With 4 cords tie a 5" sinnet of half knot
twists Skip 2 cords, then tie 5" of half knot twists with 4
more cords Skip 2 cords Do this all the way around You
will have 8 groups of half-knot twists
Step No 4: Double half-hitch all cords onto a 7" ring,
doing first a half knot twist sinnet, then 2 hanging cords,
then a half knot twist sinnet, etc Be sure to completely
cover the ring
Step No 5: Gather the cords not used in the half knot
sinnets together and wrap in the center above the ring
with a IV2 yard cord This makes the half knot twists
stand out Don't cut off the ends of the wrap
Step No 6: Below the ring use groups of 4 cords (each
group must have 2 of the 'left out' cords as filler cords and
one cord on each side) and make 20" of square knots Skip
8 cords and do this with 4 more cords Continue this
pattern all the way around You will make 4 sinnets of
square knots
Step No.7: With a 2 yard cord, tie a wrap at the bottom of
the 4 square knot sinnets Don't cut off the ends of the
wrap Holding the wrap, push up to the wrap on the inside
of the 7" ring This will make the square knot sinnets bow
out Tie the end of the bottom wrap to the end of the other
wrap This should secure it in place Beneath the wraps
cut off the cords at 17" Leave this tail to be combed out
later
Step No 8: Below the 7" ring, divide the remaining cords
into S groups of 4 tie 'ZVi" of half knot twists with each
group When working with the group on the left, begin
half knot twists on the left, and visa versa for right hand
side Now put 2 groups together and tie 2 square knots
with each new group, using 6 filler cords and 2 tie cords
Step No 9: Divide each sinnet into 2 groups of 4 cords
each, and tie 22" of half knot twists Remember to tie the
half knot twists on the same side as the sinnet
Step No 10: Here, either add a bead or tie 3 square knots
with 2 tie and 6 filler cords Either way switch cords here putting the longer cords to the outside Tie 14" of hah knot twist, using 4 cords
Step No 11: Tie 2 square knots using 8 cords, and add a bead Now repeat steps 8 through 11 with the 3 other
sinnets
Step No 12: Leave 2 long cords hanging on each side of
the bead or square knot Take the ends of the remaining
4 cords, fold up in half so there are 8 cords coming down
(or 4 loops), and wrap in place with a W2 yard cord Cut
each loop, unravel it, and brush it out Trim to 9" This forms a small tassle Do the same with all sinnets
Step No 13: Add a 2% yard cord onto each of the 8 pairs
of cords left out in the above step, as shown in the Technique Section With each new group of 4 cords, tie 4"
of half knot twists These sinnets will be referred to in the next step
Step No 1 4 : Divide in half each of the half knot twist
sinnets, and add to each half a 2V2 yard cord Now there
are 8 working cords under each half knot twist Tie a
square knot with the center 4 cords Add 1 more 2V2 yard
cord to each side (the cords not used in the above square knot) Tie 1 row of alternating square knots, leaving out the 2 end cords on each side Complete this step with all sinnets
Step No 15: Using the 2 cords left out on each side in
step 14 (a total of 16 cords), you will alternate cords in this manner:
Tie a square knot with the cords coming from the same long sinnet With the 4 cords left between each pair of sinnets, tie a square knot leaving a 7" space to the last square knot on each side These knots form the "basket" for the glass
Step No 16: The glass should now be tried in the basket
The 7" gaps may need to be adjusted On the cords that have the 7" gap, larkshead 3 of the 2 yard cords on each side of the square knot Tie rows of alternating square knots under the cords that were larksheaded on Tie 5 rows of alternating square knots using a l l cords below the glass
Step No 17: Half-hitch all cords onto the 19" ring
Unravel the ends and brush out the tail, using a dog brush and combing against a flat surface
If you don't have enough cord left for a w r a p , pick out 2 of the longer cords and tie a square knot around all the rest
