Evaluate Significance
The overall professional working event’s have significantly benefited me in taking my next steps in the workforce, as a graduate Each story highly resonated with me from various guest speakers from hard working professionals, to past graduate students sharing their success stories They all offered genuine advise upon their professionalism, and the ways in which you can achieve great achievement
in employment
As I am nearing the end of my degree, after these events I feel more confident that I will be able to stand out from the crowd I feel inspired to be able to make the right decisions, ask help from others, enjoy the learning journey, to be honest with myself and aim for a responsive career with purpose This unit was able to fill in the gaps within myself both on paper and myself mentally This includes holding the confidence to network, engage in extracurricular activities and reinforced essential personal traits The theory portion of this unit also allowed for the backbone of fundamental
knowledge, that has aided my experience within the events and activities
Reconstruct the Experience
The unit was able to offer various significant points, but the two that stood out for me was the WSU Alumni’s advice on networking and their career journey at the Professional Networking Event and Roh Singh’s presentation at the Professional Careers Conference
Networking was an aspect that I was extremely new and scared of, but was integral for me to learn The Professional Networking Event identified how networking is a key skill in order to create
opportunities for yourself As a graduate, entering the professional world can be daunting, but it is worthwhile to reach out and build your brand It was emphasised that our degree is merely a ticket to the game and that we must use our character of personal traits to attract employers This can allow you to be distinctive from others, and allow you to be successful in the workforce
Roh’s presentation also resonated with me, as he gave key advice that can give me a step forwards
He spoke about finding a purpose, to take risks and to preserve the tough times He accentuated the power of confidence and to not fall into fear The way to achieve this is to control your mindset Roh also mentioned to be irreplaceable and to work outside your job role to achieve the most
Analysis: Why did it happen that way?
Each week’s employability readings played in an integral part in solidifying my learnings and
allowing me to apply them in practical ways In module 3 employability reading, we were brought forth the concept of networking and employability Pool and Sewell’s (2007) reading divulged into the practicality models of graduate employability It showcased in how employability is the way in which we apply out skills, knowledge, understanding and personal attributes which can make us more likely to be successful in landing a job (Pool & Sewell 2007) The model, “CareerEDGE” was identified as the essential components of employability This included understanding generic skills,
Trang 3Module 4’s employability reading highlighted that one in two college graduates are unemployed or underemployed Coleman (2012) offered five points that allow for graduates to prepare for new roles and the possible challenges that may appear
The point, “Don’t fake it until you make it”, made me realised I needed to ask questions and
understand that I am always learning (Coleman 2012) There is no need to show that I am more knowledgeable than I am, and to acknowledge the skills and experience at my first job It is
comforting to know that no one expects me to know everything in my first role, and I will seek real understanding by asking questions (Coleman, 2012)
Module 2’s employability reading touched on the concepts of ‘graduate identity’, and how to
positively shift from higher education to the workforce This reading accentuated how we should not place as much thought upon skill and performance, as we should for practice and identity that forms the basis of that performance (Hinchliffe & Jolly 2011) In this I understood how a degree is merely a ticket to the game, and that I will need to bring forth my personal characteristics to enhance my practical skills This understand will allow me to differentiate myself as a graduate to employers Hinchliffe & Jolly (2011) also stressed how employers also evaluate upon potential, in which they are not able to assess actual performance In which a graduate’s experience can bring light their potential This insight allowed me to be proactive in with extra-curricular activities that align with
my future roles so that I can show my potential to employers through other avenues
Distil: What lessons can be learnt?
There were many integral and beneficial features that I was able to learn for my future career I have learnt that to achieve your own goals and aspirations, you must create these opportunities yourself and not wait for it I strive to always having an open mind, and to align my purpose with my career objectives
I will also put thought into utilising my characteristic traits to my advantage The LinkedIn activity displayed how I can now actively network, which was I skill I was not confident in As stated, I reiterate to myself that I am not defined by just my degree, and experiences and being proactive are just as important Alumni have empowered me to be a successful graduate and employee in the future
Apply: Prepare for future situations
Through the participation and exposure of these events and unit, I am able to be more open minded and acts on the factors of successful employability I will build my personal brand by utilising all my representative traits to indicate to employees who I am as an employee I will continue to be
proactive on LinkedIn, connect with professional and take the opportunity to invite them to informal coffee chats to form relationships It was highlighted to build connection not when you need a job, but to allow professionals to keep you in mind when the right role arrives I know this will be highly beneficial for me to master my career journey
