more than one way of representing a sound, e.g the ‘ee’ sound in feet, clean, field, puppy, these This set of phonics flashcards will help you
support your child to practise recognition of
these alternatives and how they are blended
in words Most of the alternatives contain two
(or more) letters By becoming familiar with them, children learn to recognise these as ‘chunks’
within words This will help their reading fluency The pack contains 52 two-sided cards Side
one (picture side) shows the letter or letters
representing a sound The reverse side (word
only) displays a word with a different sound —
with the letter group highlighted The picture ©
side helps to remind children of what they've
learnt at school; the word only sideisfor - _ reinforcement and is used for the games

® Familiarise yourself with the letter groups on the cards and practise their pronunciation
® Introduce your child to 3 to 5 cards at a
time, depending on the number in the set,
demonstrating alternative spellings for the
same sound, e.g the focus sound is ‘oa’ as in boat Show the picture side of the card and do the following
© Say “‘oa’, ‘oa’, ‘oa’” clearly pausing
| and pointing to the letters
© Say the word “boat”
© ‘Sound talk’ all the separate sounds,
“‘b’ ‘oa’ ‘t’”” and repeat twice more
© Say the word “boat”
~ Now ask your child to repeat this routine with you Do this for the other cards
in the set, e.g ‘ow’ as in snow, ‘o’ as in cold, ‘o-e’ as in bone, ‘ou’ as in boulder
® Lay out any six cards with the word side
showing Ask questions e.g Which can I look out of? (window) Point to the word, sound talk
it, then read it
