In 1999, an American tourist survived for 43 days in the Australian desert without food or water 33-year-old Robert Bogucki wanted to cross the Great Sandy Desert His plan was to ride his bike and walk He started on 11 july 1999, taking very little food and water with him On 26 July, tourists found his bike and some of his camping gear, only about 35 kilometres from where he started The police immediately began a search for Bogucki, using trackers, planes and four-wheel-drive vehicles They stopped the search after 12 days, because they thought that Bogucki was probably dead

Every year, readers of National Geographic magazine vote for their adventurers of the year Here

are two of them

THE MOUNTAINEER

As a child, Edurne Pasaban lived in the mountainous Basque region of Spain and she climbed her first mountain when she was fourteen At university, she studied engineering but she didn’t want a nine-to-five job In May 2010 she finished her biggest challenge, to climb the world’s fourteen tallest mountains Nowadays she is famous for her many climbing achievements, However, she didn’t climb in order to become famous She says, ‘For me, adventure is a way of life.’

THE ROAD TRIPPERS

Steven Shoppman and Stephen Bouey were old friends who grew up together in Denver But they knew each other a lot better after their adventure They both had an ambition to go on a road trip round the world From 2007 to 2010, they drove through 69 different countries during their 122,000-kilometre journey and had many adventures They took a big risk when they went across a minefield (see photo) They also got help from lots of people and they found that the world wasn’t

as dangerous as they thought!

New word: road trip (n) /ˈrə ʊ dtrɪ p/: a long journey by road

- We add –ed to regular verbs to form the past simple: work  worked, walk  walked

Notice the spelling rules for other regular verbs:

• For verbs ending in –e, we add –d: die  died

• For verbs ending in –y, we change the –y to I and add –ed: try  tried, cry  cried, study  studied

• for verbs ending in vowel + consonant (not –w, -x or –y), we double the consonant:

stop  stopped

- Some verbs have an irregular affirmative form in the past simple:

be  was / were, do  did, go  went, drive  drove, know  knew, take  took

- We use the auxiliary verb did / didn’t to form negatives and questions

Kristen didn’t go on the adventure

Did you live in Peru?

- We also use did / didn’t to form short answers Did you live in Peru? Yes, I did

Did Kristen go on the adventure? No, she didn’t

3.2 Use

We use the past simple to talk about completed action and evens in the past We often use a time phrase (yesterday, last week, ten years ago) with the past simple
