INTRODUCTION
Statement of the problem and rationale for the study
The rapid advancement of technology has made information and entertainment easily accessible worldwide This technological progress has propelled American films to global popularity, establishing them as a leading form of entertainment Consequently, the demand for translating American films is increasing significantly across the globe.
Comedy films are universally appealing, making them enjoyable for all age groups, from children to adults A 2006 study by researchers at the University of Maryland found that watching comedy films can improve heart health by increasing blood flow Therefore, comedy films serve not only as a popular entertainment choice but also as a beneficial tonic for overall well-being.
Film translation plays a crucial role in making cinematic content accessible to audiences with limited proficiency in the source language; however, research in this area remains scarce While film translation has recently emerged as a subfield of multimedia translation in various countries, Vietnam has seen minimal scholarly attention devoted to it Furthermore, existing studies primarily focus on the translation of film titles or scripts, such as Chang's work, indicating a need for broader exploration within this discipline.
(2012) or Andersen‟s (2010), rather than on a specific movie genre
All the reasons above urged the researcher to conduct a study titled “Difficulties encountered by fourth-year students in FELTE, ULIS, VNU in translating American comedy filmscripts into Vietnamese”
Aims and objectives
This thesis aims to offer translators and translation students an overview of the translation process for American comedy filmscripts It highlights the unique characteristics of comedy filmscripts that can pose challenges during translation Additionally, the research proposes suggestions to enhance the translation process and improve the quality of translated comedy films.
To achieve the aforementioned aims, the following questions were addressed:
Question 1: What are the difficulties encountered by K44 translating & interpreting students in FELTE, ULIS, VNU in translating American comedy films?
Question 2: What are the suggestions perceived by those students as solutions to the difficulties?
Scope of the research
This study focuses exclusively on the English-Vietnamese translation of comedy films, as the reverse translation is impractical due to the scarcity of Vietnamese comedy films compared to American ones The researcher has specifically selected comedy films with English as the original source language to ensure the credibility and quality of the translation, avoiding complications from involving a third language Furthermore, American comedy movies were chosen because the United States boasts the largest film industry, providing a wealth of material for this research.
Significance of the research
As stated previously, there has been not much research on the English –
This study focuses on the Vietnamese translation of films, particularly comedy films, and aims to serve as a valuable resource for film translation It seeks to benefit both translators and translation students by enhancing their understanding of the factors influencing the translation process and quality of comedy film scripts Furthermore, the research offers practical suggestions from participants that can assist translators in navigating their own challenges in translating movie scripts.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Translation
Translation dates back to 3000 BC in Elephantine, where archaeologists discovered bilingual inscriptions Throughout history, translation has been crucial for communication between different language speakers and for cultural exchange In today's globalized world, the significance of translation has grown, leading to extensive study by scholars and professional translators.
Translation can refer to both the translated text and the act of translating, as noted by Munday (2001) Cartford (1965) defines it as the replacement of a source language text with an equivalent target language text Nida and Taber (2004) further elaborate that translation involves reproducing the closest natural equivalent of the source message in the receptor language, focusing on meaning and style Similarly, Bell (1991) describes translation as expressing the content of one language in another while maintaining semantic and stylistic equivalence Newmark also contributes to this understanding of translation.
(1988) coins translation as the act of rendering the meaning of a written text into another language in the way the author intended the text
Translation is the process of converting written text from a source language to a target language while maintaining the original content or style.
The translation method refers to the overarching strategy a translator employs for an entire text, which can vary based on the translation's purpose Initially, translation methods were categorized into two primary types: literal (word-for-word) and free (sense-for-sense) translation Over time, numerous additional translation methods have been developed by professionals and experts in the field.
Newmark (1988) identifies eight primary translation methods: word-for-word, literal, faithful, semantic, communicative, idiomatic, free, and adaptation translation These methods can be employed individually or in combination to create a target language text that meets specific needs, such as catering to the intended readership or serving a particular purpose, whether informative or expressive.
Word-for-word translation focuses on preserving the original structure of the source language while translating individual words based on their most common meanings, often without considering context This approach is particularly useful for grasping the general content of complex texts.
SL: This is a big house TL: Này là một lớn ngôi nhà
This method involves a grammatical structure in the source text that closely resembles that of the target text However, the translator using this approach translates words individually without considering their contextual meaning This technique is often utilized in translation practices.
6 when the translator wants to identify tough problems or to translate the literal meaning of a poem
ST: He is a big liar
TT: Anh ta là một kẻ nói dối lớn
The translator employs this method to accurately reflect the intentions of the original writer While this approach ensures fidelity to the source language, it can result in a translated text that lacks naturalness This method is particularly utilized for translating literary or authoritative works.
ST: He is as fast as a kangaroo
TT: Anh ấy nhanh như một con kanguru
Semantic translation yields a more natural text compared to faithful translation This approach involves translating cultural terms into neutral equivalents in the target language, emphasizing the semantic meaning of the original text It is commonly utilized for expressive works, such as literature.
SL: Right in the heart of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake is an enchanting body of water, a peaceful oasis away from all the hustle and bustle of the city
Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, nằm ở trung tâm Hà Nội, là một hồ nước tuyệt đẹp, mang lại không gian yên bình giữa sự nhộn nhịp của thành phố.
Communicative translation prioritizes conveying the message of the source text, making it more flexible than semantic translation This approach focuses on ensuring that the target text is both acceptable and easily understood by readers It is particularly effective for translating informative texts.
SL: Nhà có chó dữ
Semantic translation: There is a fierce dog in the house Communicative translation: Beware of the dog
Idiomatic translation reproduces the message of the source text by adding colloquialism and idioms which do not exist in the original text
When in Rome, do as the Romans do = Nhập gia tùy tục
Free translation conveys the meaning of the text while disregarding the original structure It is commonly employed for paraphrasing and can expand upon the original content, making it particularly useful for informative translations.
Adaptation is one of the eight translation methods and is the most flexible, primarily used for translating plays and poetry This method involves converting cultural references from the source language into equivalent terms in the target language, effectively making it a form of text rewriting.
Bữa trước, riêng hai dưới nắng đào,
Nhìn tôi cô muốn hỏi "vì sao ?"
Khi tôi đến kiếm trên môi đẹp
Một thoáng cười yêu thỏa khát khao
Vì sao giáp mặt buổi đầu tiên,
Tôi đã đày thân giữa xứ phiền,
Không thể vô tình qua trước cửa,
Biết rằng gặp gỡ đã vô duyên?
The other day, we met in bright sunshine Looking at me, you wanted to ask "Why?" When I came there to see on your lips fine
A hint of smile that so much pleased my eye
Why was it that even on the first day
I was so soon banished to great sadness Hardly had I stepped in across the way Than I knew right then that we'd be loveless
Translation procedures are essential for effectively conveying the meaning of the source language, typically at the sentence level or smaller linguistic units This article focuses on nine common translation procedures identified by Newmark (1988), highlighting their significance in the translation process.
Transference (loan word or transcription)
Transference is a translation technique that involves incorporating a source language word directly into the target language text without translation This method is commonly used for personal names, geographical names, titles, and similar elements.
SL: Napoleon Bonaparte was a French, preeminent military and political leader
TT: Napoleon Bonaparte là một nhà chính trị, quân sự kiệt xuất người Pháp
Naturalization technique means “adapts the SL word first to the normal pronunciation, then – to the normal phonology of the TL” (Newmark, 1988, p.82)
Napoleon = Nã Phá Luân Pedal = Pê-đan
Through translation (calque or loan translation)
Adopting this procedures, name of organizations or well-known terms are translated literally
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) = Hội chứng Suy giảm Miễn dịch Mắc Phải
United Nation Development Program (UNDP) = Chương trình phát triển Liên Hợp Quốc
Films
2.2.1 Development of film and comedy film
Arnheim (2006) argues that film is an art form akin to novels and paintings, emphasizing that it should not merely replicate real life In contrast, Bazin (2004) perceives film as a medium for objectively representing reality Ultimately, film serves as a form of entertainment, narrating stories through a series of images of moving objects captured by a camera.
The film industry has evolved significantly over time, diversifying in both form and genre, with comedy films emerging as one of the most popular and enjoyable genres Originating during the silent movie era (1895-1930), early comedies often featured animated characters like Mickey Mouse and iconic comic actors such as Charlie Chaplin The technological advancements of the 1930s to 1950s introduced sound effects, marking a new era for comedy films Today, comedy continues to play a vital role in the film industry, defined as a genre designed to entertain audiences through humorous characters and exaggerated life situations.
Language plays a crucial role in the success of a film, influencing both the plot and the performances of actors In this context, language encompasses both verbal and non-verbal forms; however, this study focuses specifically on the challenges of translating verbal language in American comedy film scripts.
Film serves as a mirror to reality, necessitating that the language used in films closely reflects everyday speech According to Baumgarten (2003), film dialogue primarily involves face-to-face communication and is aimed at general audiences rather than linguistic experts Therefore, the dialogue in films must be logical and appropriate, taking into account the social and cultural contexts in which the story unfolds.
Spoken language is predominantly used in film as it mirrors real life, often being produced spontaneously, which leads to less focus on grammar This results in frequent ellipses and repetitions, necessitating that film translators meticulously analyze the script to ensure accurate additions or omissions in their translations.
- “I‟m trying to say I think it‟s wrong” instead of “I‟m trying to say that I think it‟s wrong”
- “It does you good (to have a good) laugh once in a while, doesn‟t it I haven‟t laughed at anything so much for a long time.”
- Receptionist: I'll tell him you're here Can I get you something?
Slang remains a term that lacks a comprehensive definition, despite its frequent discussion According to the Oxford Dictionary, slang refers to informal language that is more common in speech than in writing and is often specific to certain groups or contexts Eble (1996) further elaborates that slang comprises an evolving collection of colloquial words and phrases used by speakers to establish social identity or group cohesion, reflecting broader societal trends and fashions.
In summary, slang refers to the unique language used within a community that may be difficult for outsiders to comprehend, posing challenges for translators when interpreting English slang.
Another important linguistic feature of film dialogue is metaphor Nguyen Hoa
In his 2004 work, Nguyen Hoa defines metaphor as the transfer of meaning from one object to another based on their similarities, allowing us to refer to one object using the name of another due to shared characteristics He categorizes metaphors into three distinct types, as outlined in his book, Understanding English Semantics.
- Living metaphor: In living metaphor, word has unusual meaning and
“metaphor is felt as such.” (Nguyen Hoa, 2004, p.109)
Beauty is a flower which wrinkles will devour
- Faded metaphor: “This type of metaphor "lost its freshness because of long use and became habitual” (Nguyen Hoa, 2004, p.109)
To fall in love Golden youth
- Dead metaphor: “Dead metaphor are words which have lost their direct meaning and are used only figuratively” (Nguyen Hoa, 2004, p.109)
Translation of films
Film scripts can be rendered into another language primarily through two methods: dubbing and subtitling Dubbing involves overlaying the original spoken text with a target language, ensuring that the voice matches the actor's movements, creating an immersive experience for the audience In contrast, subtitling presents the translated dialogue on-screen, allowing viewers to read along while listening to the original audio Each method affects the original script differently, catering to diverse audience preferences.
Film translation goes beyond merely converting the source language script into the target language; it also encompasses essential elements such as aesthetic qualities and stylistic nuances of the target text.
Translating comedy films demands that translators accurately convey the actors' messages in the target language while effectively preserving the humorous elements.
Film translation process can be generally conducted as follows:

METHODOLOGY
Participants
The study focused on fourth-year Translating and Interpreting students at FELTE, ULIS, VNU, who were selected due to their three years of experience in translation theories and practice These students possessed valuable knowledge of American culture and language from courses such as general geography of America and American Studies Additionally, the researcher, being a K44 Translating and Interpreting student, found it convenient to conduct the research within this familiar context.
Ten students were selected for the initial stage of research focused on their achievements in the translation practice subject, with six participants from class E20 and four from class E21, determined by the student ratio in each class The researcher retrieved the participants' GPAs, categorizing them into two groups: the high-scored group (G1, GPA 8.0 to 8.9) and the medium-scored group (G2, GPA 7.0 to 7.9) E20 had 14 students evenly distributed across both groups, while E21 had 16 students in G1 and 5 in G2 Consequently, three participants from each class were selected for the G1 group, and for the G2 group, three E20 students and one E21 student were chosen for the research.
(Participants’ names were coded as P1 …P10 based on their alphabetically ordered names)
In the second stage, 4 out of 10 participants were selected for interviews basing on the data collected from the first stage.
Data collection instruments
In terms of data collection instrument, the researcher utilized multiple-case study method approach to triangulate the data To be specific, journals and interviews were employed to collect data
The participants were contacted via phone and received task instructions via email In this stage, they were asked to translate extracts of five comedy film scripts
Participants were asked to maintain weekly journals documenting their translation process, with the option to write in either English or Vietnamese for their convenience To enhance support, a guideline (Appendix B) was provided, outlining the requirements and instructions for the participants This approach was chosen because it enables the researcher to capture the nuances of the participants' experiences, particularly their translation processes, in a manner that other methods cannot achieve (Bolger, Davis, and Rafaeli, 2003).
In the second stage of the research, semi-structured interviews were held with 4 out of 10 participants, utilizing informal conversations in Vietnamese to foster a comfortable and flexible environment To ensure accurate data collection, both video recording (with participant consent) and note-taking were employed.
Data collection procedure
The process of collecting data followed 4 main steps
Extracts from five comedy films, including Date Night (2010), Bridesmaids
In this study, extracts from comedy films such as "The Internship" (2013), "Grown Ups 2" (2013), and "We’re the Millers" (2013) were utilized to gather data, as detailed in Appendix A The selected extracts were chosen based on specific linguistic features of comedy and varied in length from 600 to 800 words, ensuring they were sufficiently lengthy for participants to translate comfortably, thus maintaining the quality of the translations.
The GPAs of K44 Translating and Interpreting students in translation practice courses, collected from emails since their second year, were analyzed to determine the number of participants involved in the research.
Participants received film script extracts, and the researcher communicated with them through email to monitor translation progress and gather weekly submissions After five weeks, a thorough analysis of all translations was conducted to identify common challenges faced by the participants during the translation process Additionally, data on the solutions employed by participants was recorded and categorized based on their underlying causes.
At this stage, 40% of participants were invited for informal interviews, where the researcher addressed specific issues, clarified ambiguities in the journals, and gathered suggestions for improved translation Following the interviews, the recordings were processed and synthesized for analysis.
Data analysis procedure
The research collected a total of 50 journals, along with recordings of interviews, notes, and email messages Given the extensive amount of data, coding was identified as the initial and essential step in the data analysis process.
To ensure consistency and convenience in the research coding system, participants were identified using a format that included their identifier, the source of data, and a reference number Participants were numbered based on the alphabetical order of their names, while journal entries were coded according to these participant numbers For example, P1.J.5 refers to participant 1, journal entry from week 5, and P4.I.5 indicates participant 4, interview entry from week 5.
4, interview, and interviewee‟s turn 5 (sample journal could be found in Appendix B and transcription of interviews were presented in Appendix C)
As the participants could use either English or Vietnamese in their journals (see
3.2.1), the number of Vietnamese journals was relatively large Therefore, Vietnamese
20 journals were firstly analyzed to get the key points After that, identified main points were translated into English and categorized accordingly to those gained from English journals
The data revealed that participants faced challenges categorized into two primary types: objective difficulties (O) and subjective difficulties (S) These difficulties were systematically coded as outlined in the accompanying table.
Table 2: Coding of difficulties during translation process
Data indicating participants‟ solutions to the problems were noted and categorized according to each difficulty
Initially, videotapes were transcribed into written format to ensure no information was overlooked Subsequently, the transcriptions and notes from interviews were analyzed to extract key themes This data was then coded according to a predefined coding table established during the journal phase Additionally, solutions and recommendations for each identified issue were documented.
RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS
Research question 1: Difficulties encountered by the participants in translating
Data from journals and interviews revealed that participants faced varying difficulties with scripts depending on their chosen working options To thoroughly examine how each translating style influenced the participants' translation processes, all translating options were documented in the guidelines Additionally, links to watch the movie online with English subtitles were provided, allowing participants to select the most convenient translating method from four available options.
Translating the script without watching the film
2 Translating the script then watching the film to recheck
3 Watching the film then translating the script
4 Watching and translating at the same time
The journals reveal a diverse range of translation strategies employed by participants, as well as in a film excerpt Notably, all proposed options were utilized, with some participants unexpectedly applying two different strategies for the same extract simultaneously.
Option 1: Translating the scripts without watching the film
Participants faced challenges when using this option, despite receiving a summary of the movie and a brief description of prior scenes, as reported in the journals.
22 appropriate translation of personal pronouns for the characters One illustration as below:
Kiethie: He ‟s too chicken to ask her out, Dad, „cause she‟s the hottest girl in school, and Greg is fugly
Participant P2 expressed uncertainty in her journal about translating the personal pronoun "he" as "anh ấy" or "em ấy/nó," as she was unsure of the identity of the older brother without viewing the movie She highlighted that relying solely on the script could result in inaccurate translations of personal pronouns.
Kenny So now you're gonna become an even bigger drug dealer?
Vậy từ giờ anh sẽ thành tên buôn lậu ma tuý?
David Drug smuggler, Kenny There's a difference
Vận chuyển ma tuý, Kenny Có sự khác biệt đấy
Kenny You 're probably gonna get searched at the border No offense, you look like a total drug dealer
Anh sẽ bị tóm ở cửa khẩu Không có ý gì xúc phạm đâu nhưng nhìn anh giống y tên buôn ma tuý
David No shit Thanks, dude Ôi không, cảm ơn anh bạn
Option 1 focused on strictly adhering to the script for the movie's portrayal of elements such as setting and characters' emotions In the dialogue, participant p4 interpreted the term "dude," a casual address for friends, to conclude that David and Kenny were friends, translating "you" as "anh." However, the film reveals that David is significantly older than Kenny, making "chú" the appropriate translation for "you" instead.
Another problem caused by this option was that the participants sometimes had incorrect understanding of what the character actually means Illustration from participant‟s journal as follows:
Character Script Translation by participant P6
Ok I‟m gonna hang out here if that‟s all right
Oh, thank you for that That‟s very helpful
Tôi sẽ ra ngoài một chút nếu được Cám ơn về điều đó Nó thực sự hữu ích
Participant P6, who had not seen the movie, was unaware that David was being kidnapped by two aggressive individuals This lack of context led her to mistranslate the phrase "Easy Easy Ohhf!" as "Dễ phải không Ồ," when the accurate translation should have been "Bình tĩnh, bình tĩnh nào."
Last, translators deploying this working option may produce incorrect translation
Character Script Translation by participant P4
David Whoa, Brad, what the fuck is this?
Look man, I was gonna call you back
Xin đừng giết tôi Tôi vừa bị cướp, thật đấy Ồ Brad, chuyện gì đang xảy ra vậy? Tôi định gọi cho anh tối nay.
What are you …? What? Oh, the plastic ?
Cái gì thế? Cái …? Cái thẻ ?
In the film, David stands on a nylon sheet, which should be accurately translated as "tấm nilong." However, participant P4 had not seen the movie, leading to her incorrect translation of the term "plastic."
The nature of the working option significantly hindered participants from producing accurate translations, as they lacked visual depictions of the movie's content Relying solely on the filmscript to envision the setting, characters, and events led to a higher likelihood of mistranslations.
Option 2: Translating the script then watching the film to recheck
Participants who chose option 2 encountered similar challenges as those using option 1, particularly during the translation verification process While watching the movie could help clarify translations, three out of five participants found this double-checking method confusing This confusion stemmed from the need to compare both the translation and English subtitles simultaneously, which required switching between multiple applications and tabs Consequently, some movie segments were missed, necessitating rewinds to review unchecked portions Ultimately, the primary issue with this approach was the confusion experienced during the double-checking phase.
Option 3: Watching the film then translate the script
Regarding to the journals and interviews, the major difficulty caused by this translating option was that the participants forgot several details of movie
- Phil: What‟d you learn in school today?
- Phil: Fantastic! Won‟t have to pay for college
A study found that two-thirds of participants did not recall the scene where the dialogue occurred, leading to confusion over the phrase "whose move?" It wasn't until they rewatched the movie and recognized that the children were playing a puzzle when Phil asked the question that they understood its meaning.
Data from journals and interviews revealed that this option enabled participants to grasp the movie's context and character relationships, aiding in the selection of suitable language styles Furthermore, it reduced the likelihood of mistranslations, as seen in the last two examples of option 1 Overall, option 3 proves to be less problematic compared to the earlier alternatives.
Option 4: Watching and translating at the same time
According to the journal data, this work option significantly consumed participants' time, as they needed to divide the movie into smaller segments for viewing and translation In the interview (Appendix C, Answers for questions 1 and 2), participant P6 highlighted this challenge.
Option 4 is my most favorite translating style Nonetheless, I could not gain an overview of the whole movie context and the later, unprocessed movie scenes were unknown If later revealed scene affecting the content of the previous scenes, the translator would have to edit the previous scenes‟ translation
Data from interviews and journals indicated that this option allowed participants to view movie scenes, enhancing the quality of their translations Additionally, the simultaneous watching and translating process helped prevent information loss and mistranslations.
Option 5: Combination of option 3 and 4
Over a five-week period, data collected from journals indicated that this working option was utilized eighteen times, with all participants initially selecting option 3 Interviews and journal entries further revealed the underlying reasons for this preference.
CONCLUSIONS
Major findings
This research aimed to identify the challenges faced by K44 Translating & Interpreting Students at FELTE, ULIS, VNU when translating American comedy films By analyzing and categorizing data collected from journals and interviews, two key findings emerged from the study.
Participants in the film script translation process faced challenges that can be categorized into subjective and objective difficulties Subjective difficulties involved issues related to translation methods, understanding the text, and expressing ideas in the target language In contrast, objective difficulties encompassed five linguistic aspects: unfamiliar vocabulary, slang, metaphors, wordplay, and profanity, along with a cultural element that highlighted the importance of cultural knowledge in translation.
To address linguistic and cultural challenges, translators often utilize online resources and printed materials for solutions It is recommended that translators first familiarize themselves with the movie's content and identify the target audience to choose an appropriate language style Additionally, employing various translating styles and conducting thorough revisions are crucial for achieving high-quality translations that maintain readability and naturalness.
Limitations of the research and suggestions for further study
In spite of the researcher‟s effort, shortcomings were inevitable due to the lack of resources and time pressure Two main limitations are presented below
First, there was a scarcity of available materials on the characteristics and translation of films in general and comedy films in particular Additionally, due to
For the initial research question, data was gathered from only five film script extracts, totaling around 3,500 words, which may have resulted in the omission of certain factors influencing the translation process of comedy films.
The researcher failed to specify the target audience in the journal's guidelines provided to participants, leading to confusion regarding the appropriate language style to adopt This lack of clarity may disrupt the participants' translation process and negatively impact both their translations and reflections in the journal.
To enhance the credibility of research on comedy films and film translation, it is essential to conduct a thorough investigation into relevant materials Additionally, utilizing a larger number of comedy film scripts for data collection will help minimize overlooked issues and strengthen the overall findings.

I'm going to veterinary school up at Columbia
And we parked our car on Harrison Street to take a look around, and when we came back, it had been towed
Chào anh Rất xin lỗi vì đã làm phiền
Thật ngại quá, chúng tôi vừa chuyển đến đây từ Wichita Tôi sắp nhập học trường Thú y ở Columbia
Ban nãy chúng tôi đậu xe ở phố Harrison để đi dạo một lát, khi quay lại thì thấy xe đã bị kéo đi rồi
Gone Everything we own is in there Everything Wallets, ATM cards, all of it
And the tow company won't release our property unless we pay them a $15 processing fee
Thế là xong Tất cả những gì chúng tôi có đều ở trong đấy cả
Ví, thẻ ATM, tất tần tật
Công ty kéo xe đi sẽ không trả lại xe nếu chúng tôi không trả họ 15 đô phí phạt
Claire And there it is Yeah, we maybe from New Jersey, but we're not rubes
Vâng Chúng tôi là người New Jersey, nhưng chúng tôi không phải đồ ngốc
Stranger Excuse me? Xin lỗi?
Phil We know you're scamming us With the sob story and the really specific amount of money
Too many details about your life
Tôi biết hai người đang lừa chúng tôi bằng câu chuyện cảm động và một số tiền rất cụ thể
Quá nhiều chi tiết về cuộc đời hai người
Claire Too many details Quá nhiều chi tiết
Phil No, we're not falling for it Find somebody from Connecticut
But, okay, okay Just in case, I'm gonna give you $5 even though I know it's a scam
And I only have a 20, so I'm gonna give that to you even though it should be a five Scam
Chúng tôi không tin đâu Lừa ai đó đến từ Connecticut ấy Thôi được rồi, chỉ là phòng trường hợp
Tôi sẽ cho 2 người 5 đô mặc dù biết đây là trò lừa đảo
Và vì tôi chỉ có tờ 20 đô, tôi sẽ đưa cho hai người 20 đô này mặc dù tôi chỉ nên đưa 5 đô thôi Lừa đảo
Claire They had no idea who they were dealing with Họ không biết rằng họ đang lừa ai rồi
Annie Do you have any ideas of styles? Cô có ý tưởng gì về kiểu dáng không?
Couple (female) Oh, l don't know
What do you think, honey? Ồ, tôi không biết nữa
Anh nghĩ sao anh yêu?
Couple (male) Whatever you want Bất cứ thứ gì em muốn, em yêu
Annie Look at how you guys are making this decision together
That's sweet You guys love each other, huh?
Nhìn cách hai người cùng đưa ra quyết định kìa Thật ngọt ngào Hai bạn yêu nhau chứ?
Couple Yeah Vâng, chúng tôi yêu nhau
Trust in relationships can be challenging, as you may never truly know the person you’re sharing your life with The fear of uncertainty can be unsettling, especially when considering the possibility that your partner may not be who they seem.
Bạn có muốn xem những chiếc nhẫn đính hôn này không? Thật ngọt ngào, nhưng đừng quá tin tưởng Đặc biệt là trong mối quan hệ hẹn hò, sống chung với nhau nhưng bạn chưa chắc đã hiểu rõ về người bên cạnh Điều này thật đáng sợ Nhìn vào anh ta, liệu anh ta có thực sự là người châu Á không? Thật đáng lo ngại.
Vậy là hai người đang tìm nhẫn đính hôn hả?
Couple We‟re going to browse À, chúng tôi đi ngó nghiêng cái đã
Annie Okay, sure l'll be here Được thôi, tôi sẽ ở đây nếu các bạn cần gì
Thế là thế nào hả?
Annie Umm, nothing They had to run They had to go somewhere À không có gì, họ có việc phải đi
Don And no wonder You're selling lifelong happiness You're not telling everyone about your problems and how your boyfriend left you, and maybe marriage will work out
Show me your ''love is eternal'' face
No, that's two years, four years tops That is not eternal
Kahlua What's up, Don-Don? Có chuyện gì vậy Don-Don?
Don You make up the best nicknames You don't need a nickname because Kahlua is so delicious
Don't sue me for touching you
Show Annie your ''love is eternal'' face
That looks like you have menstrual cramps
Thank you so much, Kahlua
Now, why can't you be more like Kahlua?
Don You've just got to try harder Cô phải cố hơn nữa đi, Annie
The whole reason you have got this job, Annie, is because your mom is my sponsor in AA, and l'm doing her a favor
Lý do cô làm việc ở đây là vì mẹ cô là người bảo trợ của tôi ở
AA, và tôi chỉ đang giúp bà ấy thôi
Mr Chetty Now, I recognize that Google is not a conventional workplace
Having said that, we have rules
I'm going to ask you a series of questions You are going to raise the green paddle to indicate "yes" and the red paddle to indicate "no"
"Having a beer with your boss "
Some of you are under 21
Google không phải là nơi làm việc bình thường Do vậy ở đây có một số quy tắc
Tôi sẽ đặt ra một số câu hỏi cho mọi người Khi đó, mọi người hãy giơ tấm bảng xanh để thể hiện câu trả lời "có" và tấm bảng đỏ để biểu thị câu trả lời "không".
Một vài bạn ở đây dưới 21 tuổi
Billy Some of us aren't under 21, so, if you want to grab a cold one with me, I'm happy to do that with you
Không phải tất cả chúng tôi đều dưới 21 tuổi Vậy nếu anh muốn đi uống bia với tôi, tôi sẽ rất sẵn lòng
Mr Chetty You get high? Anh đang say đấy hả?
Okay I'm not judging I'm just saying, People do it
That being said, if you want something cold to drink, we'll hook you up
Tôi chỉ nói vậy thôi, không có ý gì đâu Anh biết đó mọi người vẫn đi uống bia với nhau đó thôi
Này cu, nếu cu muốn thì chúng ta sẽ đi uống bia với nhau
Thank you; just stop talking to me
Tôi ổn Cảm ơn lời mời của anh, chỉ là đừng nói chuyện với tôi
Billy I'm your Bill Holden in Stalag 17 Tôi sẽ là Billy Holden ở Stalag 17 của cậu
Stuart I don't even, I really don't get that reference Tôi chẳng hiểu anh đang nói gì
Billy Google it Thì google nó đi
Stuart Got it Ừ được rồi
Mr Chetty "Dating a fellow intern."
This is Google, not Match com
“Hẹn hò với thực tập sinh khác”? Đây là Google chứ không phải nơi mai mối
What about a fulltime employee? Say, management level, but not a direct supervisor Great eyes, and a severity to her look that is surprisingly sexy What's the policy on that?
No? That's frowned upon also?
Nhân viên chính thức, như quản lý không phải sếp trực tiếp, có thể là những người có đôi mắt đẹp, trông nghiêm khắc nhưng lại quyến rũ một cách lạ thường Vậy, trong trường hợp này, chúng ta nên nhìn nhận họ như thế nào?
Không ư? Cau mày lại tức là không à?
Billy So we'll say no to love? Thế là không được yêu đương gì à?
Mr Chetty We'll say no to love, yes Phải, không yêu đương gì
Billy That's gonna be a no Thế là không được đó Nick
Mr Chetty Now,"taking food home from the office."
Are you having difficulty with this, Mr McMahon?
Câu tiếp theo: “Đem đồ ăn ở đây về nhà”
Anh có ý kiến gì hả anh McMahon?
Billy I'm sorry.Just to drill down on this, what if it's, like, a perishable? Like, say there was a pudding or something that was left out
Xin lỗi, chỉ là thắc mắc … nếu như đồ ăn sắp bị hỏng thì sao? Ví dụ như bánh pudding hay gì đó còn thừa
Mr Chetty You'd like to take home a pudding, would you? Vậy là anh muốn mang cái bánh pudding đó về hả?
Billy I wouldn't mind taking home a pudding; I don't,
But that being said, I'm just saying if it's gonna go bad, is that okay to take it home?
Tôi không ngại việc đó và không hiểu tại sao người khác lại không làm như vậy Tuy nhiên, tôi chỉ muốn hỏi rằng nếu những món đồ đó sắp hỏng, liệu tôi có thể mang chúng về nhà không?
Mr Chetty Mmhmm Anything else you'd like to take home? Ừm, anh còn muốn mang gì về nhà nữa không?
Billy Only if there was, let's say, salsa or chips You know, something that's not wrapped
Nếu có thì nước sốt hoặc khoai tây chiên Thứ gì đó mà không bị bọc lại ý
Mr Chetty Salsa, chips and pudding Nước sốt, khoai tây chiên, pudding
Billy Or sushi Hoặc sushi
Mr Chetty Salsa, chips, pudding and sushi
Nước sốt, khoai tây chiên,pudding và sushi
Billy Ice cream Kem nữa
Mr Chetty Salsa, chips, pudding, sushi and ice cream Nước sốt, khoai tây chiên,pudding và sushi và kem
Mr Chetty Salsa, chips, pudding, sushi, ice cream and pizza Nước sốt, khoai tây chiên,pudding và sushi và kem và pizza
Billy I wouldn't take home a frozen pizza, but if there was a nice pie Pizza lạnh thì tôi ko mang về đâu nhưng nếu nó ngon thì tại sao không chứ
Nick That was out Oh boy Hay đó Billy
Mr Chetty I am truly impressed, Mr McMahon At the both of you At how quickly you have confirmed my doubts about you
Tôi rất ấn tượng với anh McMahon và cách mà cả hai anh đã giúp tôi nhanh chóng xác định những hoài nghi của mình về các anh.
Now, let's try this one more time
"Taking food home from the office."
Ladies and gentlemen, that is all
Giờ thử lại một lần nữa
“Đem đồ ăn ở nơi làm việc về nhà” Rất tốt
Chúng ta kết thúc ở đây
Keithie Yeah, last day of school, Greg Last chance to ask out Nancy
Buổi học cuối đó anh Greg, cơ hội cuối cùng để mời Nancy Arbuckle đi chơi đó
Lenny Nancy Arbuckle What's that? You like a girl? Is that why you've been taking them long showers?
Nancy Arbuckle… Ai vậy? Con thích ai rồi hả Greg? Đó có phải lý do con tắm lâu đến vậy à ? Greg No, I'm conditioning my hair
That's all I do in the shower Condition my hair
Không, con chỉ đang dưỡng tóc thôi mà Tất cả những gì con làm chỉ là … chỉ là dưỡng tóc thôi
Lenny That's not what the deer told me Con hươu nó có bảo với bố như vậy đâu
Greg That deer's a liar Con hươu nó nói dối đấy
Becky I heard too much conditioning can make you go blind Con nghe nói dùng nhiều dầu xả có thể gây mù mắt đấy
Lenny What? Where'd you hear that? Hả? Con nghe điều đó ở đâu Becky?
Becky Higgins Chú Higgins nói
Lenny I should kill him Bố nên cho chú ấy một trận
Keithie He's too chicken to ask her out, Dad, 'cause she's the hottest girl in school, and Greg is fugly
Bố ơi Greg quá nhát để mời chị ấy đi chơi, bởi chị ấy nổi nhất trường còn Greg thì xấu mù
Lenny So what he's fugly? All the guys in our family are fugly That don't stop us from getting the hot chicks
Look at me and look at your mother I mean, it makes no sense Only in, like, a Hollywood movie or something
Xấu thì sao chứ? Nhà mình ai chả xấu Nhưng nó chả ảnh hưởng gì đến việc tán được mấy cô xinh cả
Nhìn bố và mẹ mà xem Ý bố là trông bố với mẹ thành một cặp nhìn chả hợp lý gì cả, trừ khi là trong mấy bộ phim thôi
Greg Every guy in school likes her, Dad Trường con thằng nào cũng thích cô ấy bố ạ
Lenny And you'll be the guy who ends up with her
You know why? You're gonna follow my three-step program
Number one, make the girl smile Number two, tell her she has a nice smile Number three, say she has to go out with you that night
Vậy thì con sẽ người duy nhất hẹn hò với cô ấy
Để thu hút sự chú ý của cô ấy, bạn chỉ cần thực hiện ba bước đơn giản Đầu tiên, hãy khiến cô ấy cười để tạo không khí thoải mái Tiếp theo, khen ngợi nụ cười của cô ấy để tăng thêm sự tự tin Cuối cùng, mời cô ấy đi chơi ngay trong tối hôm đó để tạo cơ hội gần gũi hơn.
Greg Why that night? Tại sao phải là ngay tối hôm đấy?
Lenny 'Cause it gives her less time to think about how fugly you are
Thế thì bạn ấy sẽ có ít thời gian hơn để nghĩ về độ xấu của con
Và con thì xấu lòi
Greg That's the stupidest thing I ever heard And Keithie's right
Tôi cảm thấy quá nhút nhát để có thể nói chuyện với cô ấy Điều này thật sự là một sự ngớ ngẩn Keithie đã nói đúng, tôi nhát gái đến mức không dám tiếp cận và trò chuyện với bạn ấy.
Lenny Hey, you're a Feder Feders ain't afraid of women, buddy
That's not the way I'm raising you
Này, con là người nhà Feder Mà trai nhà Feder thì không có sợ con gái Đó không phải là cách mà bố dạy con
