Trang 31 Introduction
1.1 The choose a topic:
The 2nd Central Executive Committee meeting session VIII pointed out:
“Strongly renovating educational and training methods, overcoming one-way communication, training creative thinking of learners Step by step applying advanced and modern methods into the teaching process ”[1] In the Education Law, Clause 2, Article 24 states: “The method of general education must promote students' activeness, self-discipline and initiative; suitable with the characteristics of each class and subject; fostering self-study methods, training skills to apply knowledge into practice, affect emotions, bring joy and excitement to students ”[2] Innovating the way of implementing teaching method is a key issue of Vietnam's education renovation policy in the current period Innovating ways of implementing teaching method will radically change the thinking and working style of the generations of students - the future owners
of the country Thus, innovating teaching method will impact on every element
of the education and training process It creates modernization of this process Innovating teaching method is not essentially replacing old teaching methods with a series of new teaching methods In essence, "Innovating teaching method
is innovating the way of conducting methods, innovating means and methods of deploying methods on the basis of thoroughly exploiting the advantages of the old methods and applying flexibly some new methods to maximize the active, active and creative learners "[5] The purpose of innovating teaching method is how to make students really active, proactive, self-conscious, always anxious to explore, think and create in the process of acquiring knowledge and comprehending both ways to acquire that knowledge to develop and perfect your personality
Our Party and State have determined that the goal of education is to train people comprehensively to meet the country's industrialization and modernization requirements In particular, the foreign language - English subject, is one of the languages that acts as a positive means to support the most effective integration process of the country Therefore, improving the quality of education in general and the quality of English subjects in particular is one of the top concerns of the current educational career And that is paying more attention to primary school students who are just beginning to access foreign languages Learning English in elementary school helps students build and develop their communication skills through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and is one of the important starting points that contribute to the formation and development of English develop lifelong learning skills, future work capacity and ability to participate in socio-cultural activities Learning English in elementary school also creates the foundation for continuing to learn English at subsequent levels as well as equipping basic language learning skills
to learn other languages in the future
In fact, most elementary school students do not pay enough attention and invest in foreign languages, prepare lessons in a sketchy manner and cope while they are very weak in this subject Since then, some of them have a low interest
Trang 4in learning English During the class hours, most of them are passive, lack flexibility, are afraid to read and speak English and are less involved in speeches
to learn lesson Primary school students are children, their awareness level is low, the quality of subject learning is not synchronized In addition, students in rural areas are only familiar with the old way of learning, and they do not read more age-appropriate books and newspapers to expand and supplement their knowledge At the same time, these are the first years of getting used to a foreign language, while there are still a large number of students who have not yet learned their native language well
From that point of view, I think that the active teaching method using "Mind Map" is one of the most effective methods to meet the requirements of English teaching in the new age.Mind mapping is a very effective teaching technique The importance of mind maps to students is an undeniable fact It not only has benefits for Vietnamese subjects and Mathematics, but also serves as a basic knowledge base for learning other subjects well throughout the learning process
at all levels
Mind map is a way to set up diagrams of knowledge and skills to form knowledge, helping learners to easily learn and develop thinking Accordingly, mind maps will be realized through the form of combining, simultaneously using images, colors, lines, and writing with positive thinking to explore, deepen
as well as expand an idea Idea, a topic or an array of knowledge, a certain field These are my little experiences, I have done and achieved very good results We hope that these experiences contribute to complement and enrich the teaching methods of colleagues
1.2 The purpose of the research initiative.
The purpose of the topic is to study the situation of foreign language teaching for elementary school students and foreign language learning of elementary school students, their interest in the subjects and methods of learning foreign languages by using mind map
- Thereby finding the strengths and weaknesses of their learning method, as well
as in the teacher's teaching method, thereby proposing solutions to improve the quality of foreign language subjects in elementary schools
1.3 Research subjects.
Research using mind map to create interest in learning English for elementary students
1.4 Research Methods.
In this topic, I have used the following research methods:
1.4.1 Theoretical research method.
Read some books, reference materials, search the Internet for documents related
to the use of mind map in English lessons
1.4.2 Observation survey method:
In order to research the subject in depth, I investigated the reality of
teaching and learning English in elementary school Interview and schedule English teachers, combined with professional teams and school administrators
1.4.3 Experimental teaching methods:
Trang 5I have conducted English classes to apply the found methods to teaching
1.4.4 Methods of summarizing and drawing experience:
After each lesson period, using the form of teaching in the topic, I often summarize and draw experience for each lesson; Continuing to change and innovate to suit the following lessons After each stage is also compared, summarized to draw common experience
2.Content
2.1 Theoretical basis of the initiative
In recent years, the education sector has always been innovated in terms of goals, content and methods as well as active teaching arrangements, contributing
to improving the quality of education For any subject, it is very important to engage students and engage them in lessons That not only helps them understand the lesson faster, but also helps them deepen their knowledge and remember the lesson better Since then, their ability to think and focus is newly developed Thus, to have an interesting lesson for students requires teachers to
be more prepared and invested than normal classroom lessons, even the process
of accumulating experience over time can be effective and persuade students, make them really interested and focus on the lecture It is a requirement, an important goal of the teaching process, especially for English teachers
Primary education is an important level that contributes to laying the foundations for the formation and development of student's personality In elementary schools today, English is taught as a basic foreign language, an independent subject, taking up a lot of time in the curriculum of children Like other subjects, English is designed to provide initial knowledge about foreign languages, helping students to have a new communication tool in their first language, initially developing the ability to identify Critical thinking and pre-linguistic skills in practicing English communication in four forms of listening, speaking, reading and writing In addition, learning English also helps students build their ability to express personal ideas confidently, independently and creatively
English is of immense importance in the country's current renovation period, with the ability to educate immensely in cultivating perseverance and memorization from the thinking manipulations necessary for approaching and forming a new language Primary English is considered to be a bridge between teaching English with junior high and high schools, ensuring the integration with relevant content of other subjects in the elementary curriculum
In elementary schools today, English is taught as a basic foreign language, an independent subject, taking up a lot of time in the child's curriculum Learning and using English requires both a creative, diligent practice of both learners and teachers, especially in the current educational reform situation Teaching in the innovative method focuses on students' confidence and creativity, creating conditions for them to think, actively practice English, quickly grasp and deepen the amount of knowledge they have learned
Of course, to produce such flawless "products", the teacher plays a very important role Someone once said: The teacher stands on the podium like an
Trang 6actor on the stage That is why the teacher's teaching method has a great impact
on the student's learning process From that point of view, I think that the active teaching method using "Mind Map" is one of the most effective methods to meet the requirements of English teaching in the new age
2.2 Actual situation before applying experience initiatives.
Facing this situation, as an English teacher, I always think about how to bring students interesting and new lessons, stimulating their interest in learning, the activeness of them from good to weak Poor, how after each lesson, not only students will inculcate knowledge, impression, and remember forever, but also help them become more confident and proactive There are many teaching methods implemented every year to improve the quality of the subject, but perhaps the active teaching method using the "THINKING Diagram" is my favorite With mind map, I can apply in any stage of a lesson, attracting all types
of students to participate, making them lose their fear and boredom with this subject, and especially stimulates their thinking, curiosity, the ability to explore and expand their knowledge This is very important because, according to Margaret Mead, "Children should not be taught what to think, but teach them how to think"
In the school year 2020-2021, I was assigned to be in charge of teaching English 5th grade for 83 students I myself am very worried because some children are shy, read lisp, recite slowly Most of the students are very innocent, playful and have no sense of responsibility in studying, or talk, like to work privately during school hours, often ask to go out, or forget books, school supplies and very lazy to study at home Most of the parents are farmers, laborers, hired laborers, and the family economy still faces many difficulties, especially some of them are orphaned by both parents So parents are not really interested in their children's learning Therefore, when imparting knowledge to children, teachers face many difficulties The results of the 5th Grade English level of interest survey are as follows:
Students % Students % Students % Students %
Table 1: Quality survey results at the beginning of the year for English in
grades 5 - Quang Truong Primary School
From the above fact, I realize that in order to improve the quality of their learning, the first thing teachers have to do is to create interest, desire for learning, curiosity and want to know things Active teaching method using
"mind map" has an optimal effect in attracting all objects of students into the lesson, stimulating students' thinking ability, creativity, and confidence they easily grasp as well as inculcate the amount of knowledge they have learned Moreover, mind maps can be effectively applied at any stage of a lesson or any
Trang 7type of exercise That is why teachers need to actively use this teaching method
to help English gradually become a close friend of each student
2.3 Measures used to solve the problem
2.3.1 Apply "mind map" to check old lesson:
Checking old lesson is part of the teacher's workflow in the classroom The purpose is to assess students' grasp of knowledge and skills in applying knowledge to the lessons learned Thereby the teacher also finds ways to make adjustments in the teaching process However, how to check the old papers does not become an obsession, even a fear for students On the contrary, they feel that
it is an opportunity for themselves to show their abilities to their friends and teachers Only by doing that will students be interested in the subject But when the students have loved and interested in the subject, the quality will definitely
be high That's why I used the form of checking old papers by drawing both mind maps and presenting, then based on mind maps I asked them a few related issues With this method, I can both test the memorization of vocabulary and lesson content and give them the opportunity to use and practice speaking English At the same time, they will gradually become more confident, no longer afraid to speak English in front of everyone
Example: After finishing UNIT 18: What will the weather be like tomorrow? Lesson 1, Unit 1 Part 1,2,3 of English 5 program, instead of asking students to write freely, I asked them to write vocabulary about the weather topic according
to each topic group You will have to present the following:
Main content: Weather
Trang 8- Then they continue to draw the next small branches to list the vocabulary that they have learned
- After you have finished presenting the above content, I ask you to use the words just written to talk about the weather of yesterday, today and the weather forecast for tomorrow
So with this old test method, teachers will teach students to gradually familiarize themselves with how to learn and memorize vocabulary and grammar by topic in a concise and systematic way Besides, when checking the reading comprehension, students not only grasp the main ideas of the lesson but again they remember vocabulary in their context and usage instead of remembering each word individually As before, and once you know how to use vocabulary, you will definitely remember words longer and use them more flexibly Moreover, while presenting and presenting diagrams, students will gradually practice their speaking skills in front of a crowd, gradually increasing their confidence as well as their English speaking ability
2.3.2 Apply the "mind map" in the Lead -in section:
“Lead-in” is an introductory activity before teachers introduce new lessons, helping students somewhat visualize what they are about to learn There
is a very good comparison on this matter “If we assume English lesson is a house, lead-in activity is the door If we want to come into the house, we should open the door first ” Thus, we can see all the importance of this activity The more effective the lead-in, the easier it will be to include students in the main content A successful teacher is a teacher who can attract all types of students in the class, be attracted to her "Lead-in" section and "mind map" can help you do that
Example: When teaching Unit 15: Do you have any toys? Lesson 1 Part 1: 1,2,3,
I ask students to draw a mind map to list their toys at home I divide the class into four teams, over a period of 4 minutes if either team does well The best team will win [7]
Main content: Toys
Trang 9- Then they continue to draw the next small branches to complete the content of the diagram The teacher asked the students to hang their team products on the board and send a representative to present
- The team that draws correctly, beautifully and makes a good presentation will win
It is clear that with this form of "lead-in" with mind maps like this, teachers have succeeded in engaging all types of students because from the good to the weak, there are tasks to do from thinking up ideas to writing and decorating diagrams), each child has to make a small contribution to help complete the product according to the rules and win Thanks to such small activities, it will gradually help weak students become bolder, more confident in learning, and gradually clear the gap in class levels Moreover, they both play and compete with each other but also think a lot
2.3.3 Apply the "mind map" in the “point and say” section:
This is the activity when the teacher goes into teaching the main content
of the lesson, students practice asking and answering the sample questions provided by the teacher It can be said that this is a relatively important activity
to create excitement as well as provoke curiosity to explore new content of students To achieve that, at this stage, the teacher needs to introduce an overview of the topic to be learned and elicit, explain a new problem by different methods or use facts related to the life experience of the teacher Students to make them feel comfortable and excited when approaching the main content of the lesson I have been using "mind mapping" frequently at this stage, and it has been very effective
Example: When teaching Unit 9: What color is it? In the Lesson 1 [3] section, before having students look at pictures and talk about past and present situations, I ask students to use their mind maps to list all color words Pharmacy Students will work in four groups for 5 minutes Present the mind map as follows: [7]
Trang 10Then they continue to draw the next small branches to complete the diagram content
The teacher asked the students to hang their team products on the board and send a representative to present
The teacher makes comments and edits the student's schematic They will then look at the diagram and begin to practice speaking in the next section
Looking at the above mind map, students will surely practice speaking a lot easier than looking at the two pictures in the textbook Especially for weak or shy students, who are both scared and poor in vocabulary, if the teacher does not make such arousing, they probably will never be able to say a sentence in the class
2.3.4 Apply "mind map" in the "Let’s talk" section
This is the stage where students practice and practice their language based on the sentence patterns provided That is why most of us students find it difficult and less confident to speak in this step Therefore, to teach this part to
be successful, a teacher must be like a talented captain steer his ship step by step
to reach the destination Over the years of teaching, I have found it impossible for students to do if the teacher does not suggest them Here are examples of some of the types of lessons I have applied
Example: Unit 16: Where's the post office? Lesson 2 English 5 [3]
After finishing part 1, 2 to 3, I ask students to present some more vocabulary on the topic of vehicles First, I have students draw a mind map to present their main content in 3 minutes, then they will look at the diagram and reinterpret When doing so, I see that not only good and good students doing well but the previously weak ones, they seem to have not bothered to pay attention to this stage, now they are also actively participating in the activity First, divide students into 4 groups and they will have to present mind maps in the following direction [7]:
