Trang 4Providing Access to Academic Excellence
As a public institution of higher learning, the City University of NewYork’s mandate is to offer a powerful academic program at affordablecosts CUNY’s roots date back to 1847, with the founding of the FreeAcademy by Townsend Harris The mission of that institution, as heput it, was to “Open the doors to all—let the children of the rich andpoor take seats together and know of no distinction save that of

The City University
of New York
CUNY is the largest urban university and the third largest publicuniversity system in the United States With more than 200,000students in nearly 300 degree programs on its 20 campuses (and morethan 150,000 students in adult and continuing education programs),CUNY offers a vast array of educational opportunities to diversepopulations CUNY campuses serve as indispensable cultural, socialand educational resources to the surrounding communities
Alumni—from Gen Colin Powell and comedian Jerry Seinfeld tonovelist Oscar Hijuelos, Nobel Laureate Rosalyn Yalow and 10 otherNobel Laureates—excel in every field of human endeavor.Additionally, more American chief executive officers have graduated

Tools for Education
The computer age and the Internet have radically changed the collegeexperience in the past few years Virtual classrooms (including on-lineregistration, lebrary access and report cards), quizzes over the Internetand networked dormitory rooms are just a few examples of howcolleges and universities have leveraged technology to both enhancethe learning experience and create efficient academic administration
To provide such services, CUNY needed to ensure that theinfrastructure would be able to support such diverse and demandingapplications Yongsoo Ha knew that their infrastructure would need to
be improved “We were beginning to call upon our network to domore and more, yet we had not updated the cabling system in almost
10 years Response time was slow and users had to wait much longerthan they should have—primarily due to an inadequate cabling system.”

More users, new applications, faster Internet connections and efficientand reliable data transfer were prime considerations in choosingproducts to build CUNY’s School of Law’s new network “Starting with
a good foundation made perfect sense to me We wanted to install asystem that supported both current and future applications…one wecould put in the wall and forget about,” stated Bill Darios, Network Administrator
CUNY’s School of Law looked at several system offerings available onthe market and chose the TrueNet solution from KRONE Opting forKRONE’s C6T solution, which is an Anixter Levels XP 7 compliantsolution, CUNY’s School of Law was impressed by the performancecapabilities of the KRONE products—both in electrical performanceand data carrying capacity According to Yongsoo Ha, “We wanted asystem that was perfect from one end to the other KRONE’s C6T, wefelt, was as good as they came Made by one company, KRONE’sunequalled warranty program tells me that they believe in, and stand
by, their products and systems.”

Trang 12The Existing System
The City University of New York School of Law had been operating a
10 Mbps Ethernet network for several years with no complaints Thenthe sudden and exponential demand for Internet access and e-mailbrought the network to its knees—creating an unacceptable responsetime for most users on the network The primary problem was thecabling system, a combination of Category 3 and Category 5 productsthat had been installed over the years The installed system was able
to support slower speeds, but not the 100 Mbps traffic the Universitywas beginning to deploy

A New Direction
When the KRONE C6T TrueNet system was installed, the differencebetween the old and the new was significant Where the previoussystem did not meet minimum standards requirements, the
only Category 5, it also exceeded Category 5e and the proposedCategory 6 specifications

reliability today’s applications require Network performance isdetermined by the interaction between transceivers (activecomponents such as hubs, switches and NICs) and the cabling system(passive components such as cable, patch cords and connectors).Levels XP solutions are more forgiving of marginally–performingactive components, so a larger portion of the data sent is transported successfully

Trang 26TrueNet is the first cabling system solution to offer a warranty thataddresses what’s really important to the network user: throughput.Other cabling warranties offer “application assurance.” This meansthat the link light will go on, but it does NOT ensure you that yoursystem will run efficiently With TrueNet, you can be assured thatyour new cabling system channel will not cause bit errors, which rob your system of throughput Plus, after the installation of your new TrueNet system (greater than 250 nodes), KRONE techniciansvisit and perform active testing at the installed site to make sure that everything is running as it should This even includes your active equipment!
TrueNet can offer this remarkable guarantee because all products aredesigned and tested using active network technology that evaluatesthe performance of a new cabling system as if there were a livenetwork in place This ensures that not only the TIA/EIA passivecriteria are met, but also the IEEE specifications—which are critical forthroughput performance
