1 LIKE questions: Do you like …? / Do you like V-ing …? /…your favourite…?

Answer: paraphrase lại từ dùng trong câu hỏi = 1 cụm sau + 1 câu nêu benefit hoặc reason (*ST = something hoặc V-ing, SO = someone)

- Yes I’m really into art, music, fashion…(*chỉ dùng với nhóm hobby, giải trí,

lifestyle, sports… Hạn chế nói I’m really into animals/ đồ vật / con người nhé)

- Yes I adore + đồ vật (Yes, I adore all kinds of animals) hoặc người

- I’m fond of ST/ SO = I’m keen on ST = I’m enthusiastic about ST (*2 cụm sau không + người)

- I find it + ADJ + to do ST: I find it easier to concentrate in a quiet place (cấu trúc này tương đối khó và chỉ hợp 1 số câu hỏi ví dụ: Do you prefer a quiet place or a place with some noise?)

2 DISLIKE questions

Câu hỏi: Is there anything you don’t like about… ? Hoặc câu hỏi: Do you like… ? nhưng ý trả lời là don’t like có thể dùng các cấu trúc sau + giải thích nguyên nhân

- Well, I’m not really fond of …

- I have never been a fan of…

- I have no interest in…

- I completely hate …

- I totally detest …(nếu rất ghét)

- I can’t stand (thường + V-ing)

- I find it quite boring/ annoying/ bothering/ disturbing/ a complete waste of time

X/ Y + Definitely I find + X/ Y + ADJ (so sánh hơn) than Y HOẶC It seems to me that

X is + (so sánh hơn) than Y / HOẶC : While X is … , I find Y…(adj)

4 What type(s) of / what kind(s) of X is are popular/ common in your country/ area? Paraphrase: nếu câu hỏi dùng popular => trả lời dùng common và ngược lại Câu hỏi

Loại Wh questions có rất nhiều dạng Bạn cứ trả lời thẳng vào cái được hỏi, cố

paraphrase lại từ trong câu hỏi nếu có thế Nếu câu hỏi khó có thể thêm 1 cụm dẫn

để câu giờ (buy time) như: Let me see/ What an interesting question!/ That’s a tough question!

6 WOULD YOU …question – câu hỏi giả thuyết

Would you like to move to another city?

Would you like to change your job?

- Nếu chắc chắn: Oh yes / Definitely / Absolutely I always wish to…(do ST) / I’ve always wanted to …/ I’m thinking of V-ing/ I have planned to / I’ve been looking for … (ví dụ: I’ve been looking for a new job for ages) (*for ages = for a long time/ for a while = quite a long time có thể là phút/ giờ/ ngày/ tháng/ năm)

- Nếu không chắc chắn: I’m not sure Currently/ At the moment… + Điều kiện loại

1 Name

Who gave you your name ?

- My Mom gave it to me She came up with my name even before I was born Luckily, it’s a gender-neutral name

Do you think your name is special?

- Definitely, it means / represents the sun in Vietnamese I suppose by giving me

this lovely name, my parents had hoped my future could be as bright as

sunshine

Do you like your name?

- Absolutely I adore it It evokes a warm feeling and sense of confidence and

trust

What do your friends call you?

- Well, they have given me all sorts of nicknames: pig, buffalo, rabbit, nerd and so

on I love them all since I know they are just for fun

2 Hometown /home

What kind of accommodation are you living in?

- I’m living in a small house with 3 cozy bedrooms, a sitting room and a kitchen I

moved into this place a couple of years ago

What do you like/ dislike about your home?

- Well, I adore its colour scheme, wooden floors and spacious balconies The only thing I’m unhappy about it is the top floor which gets super hot during summers

What kind of accomodation would you like to live in? (Cue card An ideal house part 2)

Well, I’ve always dreamt of owning a private house set in a tranquil area like city

outskirts or the countryside It doesn’t have to be a mansion or a villa but for a nature lover like me, a large garden is definitely a must

Can you describe your room?

- Well, it’s quite lovely It’s painted in ivory- white and complete with a private

balcony over-looking a little garden Especially, my room can be filled with

natural light during the day thanks to a large window

Tell me something about your hometown?

- Well, it’s just a collection of some little villages surrounded by immense rice

fields and rivers I always feel fortunate to be born and grow up in the

countryside where life is so laid-back and relaxing

- Yes, I’m quite passionate about it I have a lot of fun learning how to…

- Because I’d like to follow in the footsteps of my mother/ father, a passionate/ devoted teacher/ doctor…He/ she has been an outstanding role model for me

- I am a small business owner I run a boutique providing both ready-to-wear and custom-made clothes

- I’m responsible for designing and marketing and my sister is in charge of the

tailor team who actually make the clothes

- Well, I’m a multitasker I do all sorts of things: visual merchandising, purchasing

materials, managing our Facebook page, dealing with clients’ complaints and

recruiting & training staffs for our store

Why did you choose that job?

- Fashion is my ultimate passion I love helping people develop their own style, boost their confidence and consequently become more successful and happy in

life

What do you like most about your job?

- The best part of my work is getting an opportunity to meet and be friends with interesting people from all walks of life Some are truly a breath of fresh air

Would you recommend that job to others?

- Definitely, I find it incredibly rewarding Developing a career in fashion industry

is really tough and takes a lot of hard work and determination, but it’s all worth

Do you think this job has a bright future?

- Absolutely, people never stop wanting to look beautiful and distinctive from

others Creative and elegant fashion designs are always in high demand I believe

5 Pen – pencil

- Do you usually use a pen or a pencil?

Well, a pencil I guess I used to write everything with a pen but now I only use it when required

- Which do you prefer, pens or pencils?

Pencils definitely I find it much more convenient to take notes or sketch something

in pencil With it, I can write anywhere, in any posture, even when I’m lying on the

bed Also, unlike ink, pencil can be erased easily

- When was the last time you bought a pen or pencil?

A couple of months ago As my work involves quite a lot of writing & sketching, I usually stock up on them I don’t want to drop by stationary shops every single day

I’d really appreciate it In Vietnamese culture, a high-quality pen is considered a symbol of outstanding academic achievements and business success, so it would

make a perfect gift

- What did your teachers ask you to use? Pen or pencil?

I remembered using pens for most of my school work as instructed by our teachers

Pencils were only used in drawing class and multiple choice paper tests

6 Sports – water sports

- Have you done water sports?

I learned a bit of swimming in high school and just that My life has been so hectic and boring lately I’m thinking of taking up a new hobby next year and a water sport sounds like a great idea (* I’m thinking of V-ing ST = I plan to do ST)

- What water sports do you like doing?

I’ve always been enthusiastic about marine life so scuba diving is definitely on top of the list I’m also a massive fan of surfing To be able to conquer challenging waves

must be an incredible experience

- Are water sports popular in Vietnam?

They are not so common, I think In the north, apart from swimming, we can go

kayaking in Halong Bay and some lakes Surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving are

increasingly popular in the south, but mainly for tourists

7 Running

- Do you like running?

I do I am not an avid runner but I am really into outdoor exercise Also, running is

considered the most sociable sport, a perfect opportunity for me to make new friends

- Where do you usually go (for) running?

There is a little lake just few steps from my house and I enjoy running or jogging around it several times a week

- Have you ever run a long distance?

Well, actually I’m not a big fan of marathon However, back in high school days, we used to run 5 laps around a running track to warm up for our physical education

class The total distance added up each time was quite impressive

8 Cycling

- Do you like cycling?

Absolutely I love all things that are eco-friendly I find it truly relaxing and

convenient to get around my neighbourhood on a bicycle

- Did you learn riding a bicycle when you were a child?

Yes, I guess everyone did It was a lot of fun and I took great pride in learning to pedal on my own, without help from my busy-working parents

- Do Vietnamese people like cycling?

Well, they used to love it Two decades ago, bicycle was a major means of transport for most families in Vietnam Sadly, cars and motorcycles have replaced it now

- Do you think they will cycle more in the future?

It’s unlikely that people will give up the comfort of their private vehicles unless the government takes a bold step to encourage people to cycle more For many, cycling

seems to be a thing of the past now (**many, some, those … = rut gon many people, some people, those people…)

9 Being alone

- Do you like to be alone?

I do I love being in solitude, especially when I need some time to sort things out Spending some quality “me” time always brings me back on track whenever I get frustrated about life

- What do you usually do when you are alone?

Well, not much really It’s time to find a balance after a hectic day, so I always go for light activities such as listening to relaxing music, getting lost in a book, practicing

yoga or mindfulness, or just doing nothing

- What was the last time when you were alone and what did you do then?

Just yesterday I had a row with one of my close friends and I confined myself in my

room for nearly an hour to reflect on everything (*a row = an argument)

10 Art

Do you like art?

- Absolutely I love all things that are creative, things that only humans are capable of creating Performing arts and visual arts help us relax and stimulate our imagination, which then leads to new ideas and innovations

Do you like going to museums?

- I’m very fond of museums and cultural heritage sites in general They are always on top of my things-to-do list while travelling

Have you ever been to an art gallery?

- There are several art galleries in the Old Quarter of Hanoi and I check them out from time to time Their collections of oil paintings and lacquer paintings look amazing

but a bit pricey for me (*from time to time = occasionally, check ST out = visit )

Are there any paintings on the wall in your bedroom?

- Yes On my 25th birthday, my dearest friend gave me a floral painting created by

herself, portraying a bunch of daisy, my favourite flower It is truly a treasure I hung

it right above my bed so that I could see it every morning

11 Science

Do you like science?

- To be honest, I’m not really into science I feel like science is always a subject I had

to pass in schools I do love science fiction movies though (*dùng I do + verb để

nhấn mạnh)

How did you study science?

- Back in high school, I remember taking Biology, Chemistry and Physics I must admit

that they did give me a hard time Learning by heart all those formulas and facts was a real struggle for me If I had been able to get some hands-on experience, I

would have gotten more interested in this field (*cau dieu kien loai 3)

Did you study science in primary school?

- Unfortunately not Back then, we only had Math, Literature and moral classes I was

envious of some of my friends in private schools who were able to conduct fantastic experiments during their science class

Do you think it’s important to study science?

- Definitely Science plays an essential role in our life It has laid the foundation for almost all inventions and discoveries of humankind However, I believe there is no need to force people to study unless they are genuinely interested in it

Is it the government’s responsibility to encourage science study?

- I would say that family, school and the government should all have a fair share of responsibility in encouraging young people to study this pivotal subject A high- quality free education system for all children would be a brilliant idea

12 Park visit

Do you often go to a park?

- Oh yes For a nature lover like me, park is truly a life saver It is not only the perfect place to get some fresh air but also an excellent hideaway to escape the city hustle and bustle for a while

What do you usually do in the park?

- Whenever I have time to kill or if I’m overwhelmed with my workload, I’ll go for a walk around my neighbourhood’s tiny park Sitting under the shade of luxuriant trees and getting lost in a book also helps calm my restless soul

Do people in your area like to go to parks? What do they do there?

- It is up to the season, really In summers, people of all ages flock to the park every

morning or late afternoon to exercise, mainly brisk-walking and jogging or just to

cool down In winters, however, I see very few people there, just some men doing

Tai Chi and some middle-aged women practicing traditional dances

13 History learning

When you were a child, did you enjoy learning history?

- Well, I don’t know how to put it I got bored to death with history classes but I truly enjoyed listening to my dad’s stories about historical events in Vietnam and around

the world

Have you ever been to a museum to learn about history?

- I had never seen a museum until I moved to Hanoi for higher education The first one

I visited is dedicated to the life of Vietnam’s greatest national leader Then, I also checked out the Museum of Vietnamese history and I really love them

Have you ever watched movies related to history?

- Sure, I’m a huge fan of historical movies and documentaries I find them much more fascinating than textbooks I’ve watched a lot about the Second World War and the

Vietnam War

When was the last time you read a book (publication) about history?

- Well, I can’t remember exactly As a visual learner, I’m not so into textbooks Let me

see, the last one I read was about the Fall of Saigon Vietnam and the evacuation of

American troops in 1975 I came across it in a bookstore a couple of years ago

Do you think history is important?

- Absolutely History repeats itself Human nature hasn’t changed a bit, I believe

We’ve made the same mistakes over and over Learning from what happened in the past, especially wars and conflicts, might help preventing similar catastrophic events taking place in the future

14 Numbers

Do you often use numbers to do something?

- Of course They are an integral part of our daily life I mean we always have

something to calculate, such as the number of hours to complete a task or the

amount of money to pay for a certain item

Are you good at memorizing numbers?

- I suppose so I can remember the birthdays as well as phone numbers of my beloved

family members and close friends I do, however, have a hard time memorizing the

dates of historical events

What is your favourite number?

- I love all prime numbers They are so unique and charming My lucky number is 5

It’s also the birthdate of a person who means the world to me

Are you good at numbers?

- I guess so Back in the old school days, I was excellent at math and other subjects that deal with numbers, figures, formulas and the like Now when I go shopping, I

can easily figure out the total amount I have to pay without using a calculator

Would you like to have a job dealing with numbers?

- Definitely not I’m quite an artistic and creative person Working with data and figures is simply not my thing

15 Place & View

Does your hometown have beautiful views?

- I’m proud to say yes I was born and grew up in the countryside where we have

amazing sunrise and sunset almost all year round I used to climb on the rooftop of

my house to enjoy a panoramic view over lush rice paddies, winding rivers and

quaint villages

Do you like to stay in places with beautiful views when you are traveling?

- Absolutely View is one of the most significant criteria for me when booking a hotel

room I love sitting in a spacious balcony overlooking magnificent surroundings

How would you feel living in a house with beautiful scenery?

- It’d be wonderful What is better than that? Whenever I get upset, all I have to do is just looking out of my windows and the relaxing natural landscape outside will

instantly put me at ease

Do you like taking photos of beautiful scenery with your smartphone?

- Well, yes Actually, it’s my all-time favourite hobby I’m passionate about enriching

my phone’s albums with amazing pictures of spectacular sky, beaches, mountains, forests and rivers

Can you suggest why some people use their mobile phones to take pictures of

beautiful views?

- I believe their primary purpose is to save those breath-taking sceneries in photos for later viewing or posting on their social media Also, some people are really into

photography and just want to test their skills

16 Sweets – desserts – cakes

- Do you like desserts?

Absolutely yes They all taste amazing and look so adorable I especially love the

tiramisu cupcakes

- Do you like eating cakes?

I used to crave for them when I was a kids Now, I still love them but when I come across a beautiful cake, I don’t feel like eating it anymore Maybe because it’s so

pretty, like a piece of art

- Have you ever made a cake?

Well, I have to admit bakery is not my thing I’ve never tried my hands at making real cakes that require a range of complex utensils and ingredients I do know how

to make banana pancake though

- Do you like sweet foods?

Well, I’m no longer a big fan of them When I was little, I would throw a tantrum

whenever my mom refused to buy me an ice-cream or a flan cake Now, I believe I

can live without them all Perhaps, my appetite has changed a bit

- Are there a lot of sweet foods in your country?

Oh yes Actually, I think there are too much of them Candies, biscuits, cakes, jams, juices and sugary drinks can be found everywhere I guess a lot of people have a sweet tooth these days

17 Tea / coffee

- Do you prefer to drink tea or coffee?

Coffee definitely I love its unique taste Also, its variations seem more attractive and

trendy: espresso, latte, cappuccino and macchiato I suppose tea is for old people only

- When you go out, do you most often drink tea or coffee?

Generally, when hanging out with friends, I usually go for a cup of coffee For

business appointments, however, I might drink tea for a change Also, tea seems more appropriate for formal occasions

- When was the last time you drank some tea or coffee?

I just had some brown coffee this morning It is basically a blend of dark strong coffee brew and sweetened condense milk Sipping a cup of coffee in the morning is part of my daily routine

- Which is more popular in your country, drinking tea or drinking coffee?

I think it depends on different areas Coffee are widely-prefered in cities while tea is

the most common drink in rural areas

- Do people in your country ever give tea as a gift?

Sure, tea is considered a symbol of a supportive and long-lasting relationship so it makes a perfect gift on several occasions such as Lunar New Year or Mid-Autumn Festival No gift sets for these holidays are complete without a pack of tea

- When people in your country entertain guests do they usually drink tea, or coffee? Well I guess it’s tea Just like many other Asian countries, Vietnam has a long

tradition of drinking tea Offering guests a cup of freshly brewed tea is considered a sign of warm hospitality

18 Holidays & Travel

Do you like holidays? Why / why not? (school holidays, public holidays )

- Absolutely We all love to escape from our hectic schedule of work and study for a while Holidays are perfect time to recharge our body and mind, which is essential to

a healthy and fulfilling life

Do you prefer to travel or stay at home during holidays? Why?

- Well, it depends on the duration of the holiday If it is just one or two days, I’d prefer

to spend that precious time with my family at home For longer holidays, however,

we usually go on a vacation to get away from it all

What do most people do during their holidays in your country?

- Well, some choose to stay home and do chores or leisure activities like cooking,

cleaning , going shopping or having fun at amusement parks Others take the

opportunities to travel with their beloved ones or on their own

Where would you like to travel for a vacation?

- I enjoy going off the beaten track to discover remote mountainous areas or little known villages in the countryside This allows me to stay away from all tourist traps and truly get immersed into local culture (đến những nơi it người đã từng đến: go

off the beaten track)

Do you prefer to visit a city or a beach?

- Definitely a beach As a nature lover, I’d love to stay close to natural suroundings I’m currently living in a metropolis so obviously I don’t crave more city life

Who do you often spend holiday with?

- I enjoy travelling with my close friends, several of them are also my colleagues I

believe amazing experience and joy multiply if shared among a group of like-minded

individuals (like-minded: đồng chí hướng, sở thích, quan điểm)

Do you prefer traveling alone or in a group?

- When I was young, solo or independent trip would be my first choice The older I get, I realize that having someone else by my side can make the journey even more exciting and fulfilling Also, I don’t have to ask strangers to take photos for me

anymore

How much traveling have you done?

- I’ve done several road trips across Vietnam, from tribal highlands in the North to the

Mekong Delta in the South Thailand, Cambodia and Japan are some Asian countries I’ve visited I hope to add more European countries to the list soon

What kind of places have you visited in your life?

- I’ve been to a diverse range of places, from the futuristic Tokyo to unknown,

laid-back villages in the far north of Vietnam I think we are all in search of novel

experience and diversity when travelling (* be in search of ST = look for ST)

When you visit new places, what do you like to do?

- I am a food lover so I always look for opportunities to savour exotic food I also love wandering around, visiting historical sites and talking to people to get some insights into local culture

In which seasons do you prefer to travel?

- Generally, mild and dry weather is perfect for my travel style with a lot of walking around I usually go on holidays in autumn and early winter but it really depends on the destination I’m heading to

What is the best season to travel in your country?

- From my experience, the prime time to visit Vietnam is in autumn when the weather

is most favourable: it is sunny but not too hot or humid Most importantly, these months are not local holiday season, thus less crowded and cheaper

Do you prefer long holidays or short holidays?

- Well, my life has been quite hectic lately so I’m constantly craving for a long holiday

to travel far away There are so many distant destinations on my bucket list and short holidays just doesn’t make sense

19 Sleep – routine

How many hours do you sleep every day (or, every night)?

- Around 6 hours per day I think My work can be hectic sometimes and I might stay

up late on weekdays but I would sleep in during weekends to make up for that

Do you think it's good to have a nap during the day?

- Definitely Modern life is becoming increasingly stressful with a lot of screen time so

a quick nap is a great way to recharge our body and let our eyes relax for a short while

Did you sleep more in the past than you do now?

- I suppose so I did sleep a lot when I was young However when I got into university

and lived in a campus, I used to stay up all night I got rid of that all-nighter lifestyle already but still struggle to get sufficient sleep each day

Do you think old people need more sleep than young people?

- On the contrary I think My mom usually goes to bed at the same time with me but

she can get up extremely early in the morning Also, she tends to wake up in the middle of the night more often than me I believe our bodies naturally need less sleep when we get old

Have your sleeping habits changed since you were younger?

- Definitely Several of my routines have changed when I grow older I tend to stay up

late more often and I’m no longer able to get straight to sleep

- Absolutely Having enough sleep is crucial for our physical and mental health And it’s not just the quantity but also the quality that matters I always feel chirpy and energetic in the morning when I get sound sleep the night before

Do you like working in the morning or at night?

- What an interesting question! It depends on the season really I always have a hard time getting up early in cold weather so I’d rather stay up late to get things done during autumn and winter In spring and summer, however, I tend to become more

of a morning person (= an early riser)

Do you like music?

- Oh yes I consider myself a massive fan of it Music is absolutely an extraordinary mood booster It can turn a bad day around for me Sitting in a coffee shop and listening to some melancholic melodies makes a fantastic way to unwind/ chill out

How often do you listen to music?

- Well, I’m not sure what you meant by “listen” Music can be heard anywhere now,

on the bus, in a café or on the streets We passively listen to it all the time I also

keep the habit of turning on my favourite playlist every morning or whenever I have time to kill

What kind of music do you like? Why?

- I’d say old country pop songs are my all-time favourite My work is quite hectic and stressful so I tend to listen to relaxing and soothing melodies during my leisure time

It helps calm my soul and refresh my mind

Do you listen to other kinds of music?

- Well, yes When I’m down/ upset/ in low spirits/ feel blue, I would need a dose of rock music I also love checking out some catchy new hits on the Internet from time

to time.

Has the music that you listen to changed since you were young?

- I can see no drastic change in my taste of music really Some songs I used to listen to

during old school days are still on my current playlists
