CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

(Condition + result)

 ZERO conditional ( sự thật hiển nhiên)

Form:

If + S + V s/es , S + V s/es

Use:

 Facts which are generally true or scientific facts The condition always has the same result

E g: If your throat hurts, try salt water

If you freeze water, it becomes a solid

 FIRST conditional (có khả năng xảy ra ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai)

Form:

If + S + Vs/es , S + will / can / shall + V.bare

Use:

 A possible situation in the future or predicting a likely result (if the condition happens)

E.g: If I study hard, I will pass the exam

If he gets the job, he will move to a big city

 SECOND conditional ( không thật ở hiện tại)

Form:

If + S + V2/ed , S + would / could / should + V.bare

Use:

 Hypothetical or unlikely situations now or in the future

E.g: If I won the lottery, I would travel a lot

If I were you, I wouldn’t argue with my employer.

 THIRD conditional ( không thật ở quá khứ)

If + S + had + V3/ed , S + would / could / might + have + V3/ed

Use:

 The person is imagining a different past

 Imaginary situation that did not happen

E.g: If you had told me about the problem, I would have helped you

If I hadn’t been sick, I would have gone to your party

 SECOND conditional + THIRD conditional (MIXED)

Form:

If + S +had + V3/ed , S + would / could / might + V.bare

Use:

 a hypothesis about the past (condition) that has a consequence in the present (result)

E.g: If I had listened to your advice, I wouldn’t be in the mess now

If he had checked the map, he wouldn’t be lost

 Attention:

Should + S + V.bare , S + will + V.bare

E.g: If I were a billionaire, I would travel around the world.

->Were I a billionaire, I would travel around the world.

 Nếu động từ chính trong mệnh đề “If” : động từ thường

Were + S + to + V.bare , S + would/ should + V.bare

E.g: If my mother stayed at home now, she would cook a lot of delicious food.

->Were my mother to stay at home now, she would cook a lot of delicious food.

Had + S + V3 , S + would/should + have + V3

E.g:

If you had gone to the cinema with me yesterday, you would have been satisfied with the film.

->Had you gone to the cinema with me yesterday, you would have been satisfied with the film.

If hehadn’t come on time, I would have stood in the rain.

->Had he not come on time, I would have stood in the rain.

TRANSFORMATION:

 Câu nguyên nhân ( trước or, so/ that’s why, sau Because) -> IF

 V1 -> second conditional (IF 2)

 V2 -> third conditional (IF 3)

 CÓ “NOT” > BỎ “NOT”

 KHÔNG “NOT” -> THÊM “NOT”

E.g: Wedidn’t go on holiday because we didn’t have enough money (past simple)

-> If we had had enough money, we would have gone on holiday (IF 3)

Idon’t know her number, so I don’t ring her up
