Why Negotiate Salaries? (FREE)

Some prospective employees may be so initially excited over a job offer that they take whatever salary

is offered Others may believe that a salary offer is like a retail price; it is firm and cannot be negotiated A few job seekers still believe that if they negotiate for a better salary then the employer will find another candidate who will be more than happy to accept the offered salary Unfortunately, all of these schools of thought( point of view) can prove costly for the applicant

All salaries are negotiable

By negotiating the best salary possible, you accomplish several things These accomplishments may include one or more of the following:

• You make yourself look more valuable to the company If you negotiate your salary

successfully, then you will probably aid the firm when it comes time to engage in similar dialogues

• You stand out from the competition If you won't accept less than what you feel you deserve,

chances are the employer will believe you are worth the extra money you ask for

• You feel more self-confident When you talk the talk and walk the walk of a smooth negotiater

you feel more deserving of what you are asking for

• You nail a better salary Even if you don't get your target salary, by negotiating you will

probably have increased the initial offer, in terms of bucks, benefits, or both

• You improve your negotiating skills Every time you practice negotiating, you become a more

confident and competent negotiator, which can increase your bank account as well as your people skills

• You can avoid bad employee relations If you later learn that other same-level team membrs

started out at higher salaries, you may feel anger and resentment But negotiating for the salary you feel you deserve can help you feel as an equal among your co-workers

Don't fool yourself into believing that a starting salary is just that a start You never know what the

future holds For all you know, salary freezes and budget cuts could be looming ahead so don't assume you will get any kind of pay raise in the near future Your beginning salary is very important for a variety of reasons including:

• Unless your pre-employment negotiations set out an earlier chance for a pay increase, it can

be while before your checks change Depending upon the company, it can take as much as a year before you can even be considered for a promotion or salary review

• Annual raises are often derived from taking a percentage of your current salary By negotiating the best starting salary you get yourself off to the best possible start for all your future earnings at the company

• Often bonuses are also given out based on annual incomes Ensure your financial future by bargaining for the best in the beginning
