Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 33 to 39

The first navigational lights in the New World were probably lanterns hung at harbor entrances The first lighthouse was put up by the Massachusetts Bay Colony In

1766 on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor Paid for and maintained by light dues levied on ships, the original beacon was blown up in 1776 By then there were only a dozen or so true lighthouses in the colonies Little over a century later, there were 700 lighthouses

The first eight erected on the West Coast in the 1850’s featured the same basic New England design: a Cape Cod dwelling with the tower rising from the center or standing close by In New England and elsewhere, though, lighthouses reflected a variety of architectural styles Since most stations in the Northeast were built on rocky eminences, enormous towers were not the rule Some were made of stone and brick, others of wood or metal Some stood on pilings or stilts: some were fastened to rock with iron rods Farther south, from Maryland through the Florida Keys, the coast was low and sandy It was often necessary to build tall towers there – massive structures like the majestic Cape Hatteras, North Carolina lighthouse, which was lit in 1870 At 190 feet, it is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country

Trang 6

Not withstanding differences in appearance and construction, most American lighthouses shared several features: a light, living quarters, and sometimes a bell (or,

later, a foghorn) They also had something else in common: a keeper and, usually, the

keeper's family The keeper's essential task was trimming the lantern Nick in order to maintain a steady bright flame The earliest keepers came from every walk of life-they were seamen Farmers, mechanics, rough mill hands-and appointments were often handed out by local customs commissioners as political plums After the administration

of lighthouses was taken over in 1852 by the United States Lighthouse 803rd, an agency

of the Treasury Department, the keeper corps gradually became highly professional

Question 33: What is the best title for the passage?

A The Lighthouse on Little Brewster Island

B The Life of a Lighthouse Keeper

C Early Lighthouses in the United States

D The Modern Profession of Lighthouse Keeping

Question 34: Why does the author mention the Massachusetts Bay Colony?

A It was the headquarters of the United States Lighthouse Board

B Many of the tallest lighthouses were built there

C The first lantern wicks were developed there

D The first lighthouse in North America was built there

Question 35: It can be inferred from the passage that lighthouses in the Northeast did

not need high towers because _

A ships there had high masts

B coastal waters were safe

C the coast was straight and unobstructed

Trang 7

D the lighthouse were built on high places

Question 36: According to the passage, where can the tallest brick lighthouse in the

United States be found?

Question 37: In line 15, to which of the following does the word "They" refer?

Question 38: It can be inferred from the passage that the Treasury Department, after

assuming control of the lighthouses, improved which of the following?

Question 39: Where in the passage does the author tell how lighthouses in the

Northeast were fastened to the surrounding rock?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 40 to 47

A rather surprisingly geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake, one of the world's largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice Now known as Lake Vostok, this huge body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica The lake is able to exist in its unfrozen state beneath this block of ice because its waters are warmed by geothermal heat from the earth's core The thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates it from the frigid temperature (the lowest ever recorded on Earth) on the surface

The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting

an aerial survey of the area Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and

Trang 8

revealed a body of water of indeterminate size It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made scientist aware of the tremendous size of the lake; satellite -borne radar detected an extremely flat region where the ice remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake

The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctic is of interest

to the scientific community because of potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have survived for thousands upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and elevated ultraviolet light that have affected organisms in more exposed areas The downside of the discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate and in the problems associated with obtaining uncontaminated samples from the lake without actually exposing the lake to contamination Scientists are looking for possible ways to accomplish this

Question 40: The passage mentions which of the following as a reason for the importance

of Lake Vostok?

A It may contain uncontaminated microbes

B It can be studied using radio waves

C It has already been contaminated

D It may have elevated levels of ultraviolet light

Question 41: All of the following are true about the 1970 survey of Antarctica EXCEPT

that it

A was conducted by air

B made use of radio waves

C did not measure the exact size of the lake

D was controlled by a satellite

Question 42: The paragraph following the passage most probably discusses

A Problems with satellite- borne radar equipment

B the harsh climate of Antarctica

C further discoveries on the surface of Antarctica

Trang 9

D ways to study Lake Vostok without contaminating it

Question 43: The word "microbes" in paragraph 3 could be best be replaced by which of

the following?

Question 44: Which of the following is closet in meaning to "frigid" in paragraph 1?

Question 45: The purpose of the passage is to

A explain how Lake Vostok was discovered

B provide satellite data concerning Antarctica

C present an expected aspect of Antarctica's geography

D discuss future plans for Lake Vostok

Question 46: It can be inferred from the passage that the ice would not be flat if

Question 47: What is true of Lake Vostok?

Mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the sentence that is

closest in meaning to each of the following questions

Question 48: He never suspected that she was a theft

C At no time did he suspect that she was a theft

D What he thought was she was not a theft

Question 49: Some experts think that a meteor impact, which occurred around 65 million

years ago, may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs

Trang 10

A The extinction of the dinosaurs could only have been caused by a meteor impact that occurred some 65 million years ago

B According to some experts, the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by a meteor that struck Earth 65 million or so years ago

C Some experts reckon that the impact of a meteor that struck Earth some 65 million years ago need not have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs

D In the opinion of some experts, the extinction of the dinosaurs could have been the result

of the impact of a meteor which occurred roughly 65 million years ago

Question 50: Rose knows a lot more about science than I do
