When it comes to a time where (paraphrase: I went to a city with my family / I had a special day that made me happy / I had a journey by car), I would have to tell you about when I went to Hanoi

centre Even though I live near the capital, it is often swamped with visitors there and my mum

is upset with the air pollution there, therefore I hardly get to visit The preparation me and my

family put into making it so great makes this trip unforgettable

First of all, we planned beforehand on what we would do as well as where we would go, Secondly,

we borrowed a car to make things more comfortable for the journey around the city and last of all,

we all booked time off school and work to make this day trip happen

So last Tuesday we all woke up at 7am with all our stuff needed already packed in the car We had

a quick stop at a local pho restaurant for breakfast and headed straight into town to our first

destination - the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum which is a spectacular establishment with so much information about Vietnams greatest leader After a couple of hours, we had to leave to make it to the second destination The second place was unfortunately on the other side of town, however,

the car made it bearable We eventually arrived at the Museum of Ethnology, which I personally was ecstatic to see as there was so much information to absorb regarding the origin, distribution and characteristics of cultures In the end, we had to cut the trip short as my mother was starting

to feel sick but regardless of that, I still believe the journey and the adventure out was exhilarating

In the end, I believe everyone should (paraphrase: go on a journey by car/ go and create their own

special days/ adventure with their family) because this gives them the ability to create such fond memories as well as the freedom to attempt new things

Vocabulary

1 to swamp (v): to have too many of something, or to give someone too much to do

Eg: We’ve been swamped with emergencies today

2 to book time off school and work: to register for a day you do not go to work/ school

Eg: The change in rules meant they would be unable to book a day off work if their children were ill

4 bearable (adj): can accept or deal with something or a situation

Eg: As far as she was concerned, only the weekends made life bearable

5 ecstatic (adj): extremely happy

Eg: The new president was greeted by an ecstatic crowd

6 absorb (v): to take something in, especially gradually

10 to attempt new things: to try to do something new, especially something difficult

Eg: It is important for one to have the desire to attempt new things, as in that way, they can learn new things

Following the strong emergence of feminism during the past 10 years, females have gained a strong foothold in the world’s politics They not only are good at being a wife and a mother, but also excel in their job, which is being a national leader Among those, Angela Merkel is an

outstanding example

She is a German politician serving as the Chanchellor of Germany since 2005 and has been widely

described as the key leader of the European Union Merkel garnered the full spotlight when she was named TIME's person of the year, but her notable acts go beyond gracing a magazine cover Despite strong opposition, she opened Germany's doors to migrants during the Syrian refugee crisis

From her appearance, you can tell that she is a strong, independent woman with her short hair and

one kind of fashion formula that she sticks to, which is considered as her signature look - three-button blazers in a huge range of colours Some may criticise her for being plain, but in my opinion, it does a good job by making her look simple, yet elegant and sophisticated

Merkel is known in Germany for being private, emotionless and playing with cards close to her chest Another rival candidate even called her aloof and out of touch However, despite what people think of her, it is undeniable that Angela Merkel as the ultimate eradicator of gender stereotypes by being a prominent political figure, having considerable influence on the whole

world’s situation That’s why I always want to meet her in person to ask her where her strength comes from and to express my admiration towards her

Combo 3:

1 Describe a good experience of online shopping

2 Describe a time that you spent a lot of money on something

Answer:

To be honest, I have a never-ending list for things that I wish to purchase but it is time-consuming for someone living far away from town centre like me to go to physical stores to shop Therefore,

online shopping is a practical alternative, although it is believed to be risky sometimes

Fortunately, I’ve never had any bad experience buying things from the Internet, even when it comes to high-end items Last year, I bought a fridge online and it costs me a fortune, but I never regret as it was one of my best purchase decisions

At that time, I had never bought an appliance online before, so I didn’t even know if it was viable

or not However, the website offered a good discount and an excellent after-sales service, including pre-installation service, online support, warranty service and return or replacement

policy The one I like the most is the first on, which means they provide free pre-installation

service, as a fridge is not really customer-friendly It requires technical expertise for installation while I’m clearly not good at it The temptation was just so irresistible that I decided to buy it without a second thought

Honestly, I was a bit worried before it arrived I was like, what if it was a scam and how could I

trust an online store? I even didn’t know their address and hadn’t had any hands-on experience with the stuff I bought and I spent nearly a grand on it It would be such a disappointment if it

was a low quality product Lucky me it didn’t happen They delivered it on time and the installing process took place quickly Most importantly, the fridge has been working really well from then

on The company staff will come every 2 year to give us proper maintainance service They do know how to keep customers satisfied and I don’t have anything to complain about it

Combo 4:

1 Describe a time the vehicle you were travelling in broke down

2 Describe a situation when you didn’t have enough time

Answer:

The question reminds me of a time back when I was working for an insurance company in

Malaysia I went on a business trip with my subordinate to meet up with a prospective customer For the sake of cost-saving, instead of going by taxi, I decided to rent a SUV from a local car rental company Unfortunately, we forgot to have it inspected when we rented it, and we had to pay the price for being careless What happened was, the car broke down in the middle of the trip

and we were 20 minutes late to the important meeting

I remember that it was on the highway that the car literally died The engine seemed to be busted

and the car couldn’t run again We had to pull over to the side of the road Seeing no one on the

road, we know that we got stranded in the middle of nowhere while we only had 30 minutes left

to go to the destination I panicked for few seconds but then realized that I should be determined

to act professional, so I turned to my coworker, who looked extremely nervous, to tell her to calm

down and try to find some emergency numbers while I called our customer to apologize and admit that we might be late I think it would be the best to be honest in that situation so I didn’t attempt

to make any excuse and take all the blame instead However, I made every effort to fix the

situation by saying that I could send the customer our terms of contracts via email so they could have a look and consider those in advance I knew that it was a great advantage for them so they

would be okay with that and be more lenient with us for being late

Although everything was fine on that day – we came to the meeting and sign our contract, but from

then on, I promised myself to be more cautious and always look out for sudden accidents so I can stay far away from unfavourable circumstances like the one I’d encountered Hopefully in my next episodes of my expat living, I will never put myself in those situations anymore

Combo 5:

2 Describe a product or application which is based on artificial intelligence

8 Describe an important technological product you bought

Answer:

I’m going to tell you about my mobile phone, which is a product that is based on artificial intelligence/ an important technological product I bought

The reason why I chose my mobile phone is because it has a variety of utilities such as

entertainment, management, research and contacting people, which all come with artificial intelligence access through an application called Siri

Siri is, in simple terms, a robot that can listen to your speech and react accordingly to what you

ask, for example when I wish to contact someone I am able to say “Hey siri call dad” and my phone will start calling him This kind of tech is amazing and therefore it has become an important item in my daily life

To top that off, it also can help during my research, when I am studying and I become unsure on how to answer a question I can simply ask Siri and get exactly what I want within seconds This helps to not break my concentration, additionally if I end up getting the answer to a question or a bright idea I can also tell Siri what it is and to take notes

However, I should mention a slight problem with the product and that is if I talk in English, it can

cause understanding problems As a result, it isn’t the best method to practice my new language

on

In conclusion, my mobile phone has become such an important part of my life right now and without it I wouldn’t be as efficient as I am that’s why I believe if you are a student like myself

having a portable device that allows you hands free information on the go as well as something

to set reminders and take notes you would highly benefit from investing in a mobile device with Siri accessibility

Answer:

I’m going to tell you about a very interesting experience I had when a kid called me from a wrong

number and it made my day, month and year

It happened 1 years ago when I was on a train leaving Edinburgh for Glasgow I was studying abroad in the UK at that time and had no family or close friends by my side, so I decided to travel alone on Christmas Holiday You can imagine how lonely it is to go on a trip by yourself on

Christmas Day when people are all with their beloved ones When I was so upset to the point I

could feel tears in my eyes, I got a call from a strange number I picked up the call, thinking that

it must have been some kinds of advertisement Surprisingly I heard a kid’s voice He spoke in

the sweetest voice I’d ever heard – “Merry Christmas Nan I miss you a lot” My feelings changed

quickly from being surprised to happy and then I felt a bit awkward as it was not for me I replied

him politely by saying “Merry Christmas to you I think she really misses you too, but unfortunately, I’m not your Nan so you may want to make a different call” A quick pause and then he went on – “You’re a good person Don’t you worry, although you’re not my Nan, I will

miss you from now on, and my wish is still for you” I cracked up as he tried to talk like an adult and it was so adorable Then he continued asking me questions and was so excited knowing I’m

Vietnamese as he never met one before He even invited me to come to his house when I told him

that I was alone in family gathering time like Christmas It is undeniable that he melted my heart

What’s even better was that after the call, some people on the train who heard our conversation also wished me a happy Christmas

That kid genuinely brightened up my day I felt warm and fuzzy thanks to random acts of his

kindness I believe he will grow up as a decent person, bringing good things to this world

Combo 7:

51 Describe an experience that you got bored when you were with others

33 Describe an experience that you visited a friend

Answer:

When it comes to a time where I was bored with others / where I visited a friend, it would have to

be when I visited my friend who lives far away from the city

His name is Steven and the reason why I chose him is because despite my experience being boring,

he is still a good friend of mine as well as the story being fun to tell

So this all happened around 1 year ago when I took my motorbike out of the city and did a 2 hour journey towards the country side The journey itself was fantastic as there were so many beautiful sights to see on the way, not only that but I also enjoy being in my own company therefore a few hours with just me and some music is perfect

I eventually arrived at his house and was taken back by how minimal it was, the building was a bungalow with nothing more than a bathroom, a bedroom, a tiny kitchen and a small “living room”

inside Steven happily invited me inside and offered me a drink, and after about 2 hours of

chatting, the conversation got stale so I asked about potential activities to do to his response being

“we can watch tv and that’s about it here”

Over the course of 7 hours we swapped between talking and watching tv, which left me feeling bored out of my mind! At this point I even considered finding an excuse so I could leave early

However I didn’t want to upset my friend so I dealt with it, saying nothing for the final few hours

of the day, but I can say I was most definitely glad to leave at the end I believe that despite how close you are with someone, where you are and what you do play an important role in how fun

your time together will be and therefore pre-planning before you meet up is key

9 Describe a time when you visited a park

46 Describe a time that you got up early in the morning

Answer:

This happened just last Sunday where my family told me the night before that they wanted to go

to the local park in the morning

I thought nothing much of what they said assuming we would be going to the park around 10am however to my surprise I was being woken up by my parents at around 6am to get ready I was extremely upset about waking up this early, but it’s expected for my parents to be awake from 5am

so I guess they let me sleep in for “an hour”

After a long struggle to get out of bed, shower and eat a quick snack we were all ready by 7am out the door and into the car Luckily the morning was a lovely temperature not too hot but definitely not too cold and the sun not shining to bright helps a lot in addition to all this the park itself was only a few minutes’ drive away, so we didn’t have to worry about traffic

When we got there the park was completely empty besides 1 or 2 dog walkers which left us to walk around peacefully The park here is beautiful we have trees and flowers dotted around the entire park with a path going through them all, so you have a fantastic route to follow

Throughout our journey through the park we had a bunch of decent conversations regarding our work, studies, plans for the future and even some stupid topics like what you would do with a million dollars

We didn’t realize but 2 hours had passed, and the park started to become very busy as a result we all agreed to head back while we were all satisfied with the walk in the park

In conclusion I believe that having a small trip with your parents to a destination like a park even

if you have to wake up extremely early is a fantastic way to bond with your family not only doing something they like but opening options for you to try and enjoy new things as well
