Paper 1 – READING AND WRITING

What do I have to do in the test?

Write your answers on the answer sheet You will not have time to transfer your answers

at the end of the test

Part 1

• You have to match five sentences (1-5) with the correct notice (A-H)

• There will be an example and two extra notices you will not need to use

• Read the sentences and notices very carefully; ones which have the same words do notalways have the same meaning

• Don’t worr y if there are some words you don’t understand in the notices You are onlyexpected to understand the gist (main idea) of each notice

Part 2

• You have to read some sentences The sentences make up a short story

• In each sentence there is a gap with three multiple-choice options

• You have to choose the correct word to fill each gap from the options A, B or C

• The words can be verbs, adjectives or nouns

• Read each sentence carefully before choosing the missing word Make sure you understandwhat the sentence means before deciding on your answer

• You should not spend more than 5 or 6 minutes on this part of the test

• There will be an example and two extra sentences you will not need to use

• Here you should read the whole dialogue through once before deciding on your answers

• You need to look at what the person says before and after each gap to make sure thesentence you choose fits properly

Part 4

• You have to read a text and then answer seven multiple-choice questions There will be anexample to help you

• Read the instructions carefully Sometimes you have to choose between ‘A’ Right, ‘B’ Wrong

or ‘C’ Doesn’t Say Sometimes you will have a choice of answers A, B or C to choose from.There is usually only one text but sometimes there may be three short texts

• Read the questions quickly and then read the text all the way through before you try toanswer the questions

• This is not a vocabular y matching exercise! You have to read each part of the text ver ycarefully to find the correct answer The correct answer will be the one with the samemeaning (not necessarily the same words as the text)

• Don’t worry if there are some words you don’t understand It may be possible to guess themeaning from the context The important thing is to focus on understanding the main ideas

• You may need to spend a little longer on this part of the test (but not more than 15 minutes)

• You have to read a text with some missing words

• You have to choose the correct missing word for each gap from a choice of three choice options

multiple-• You should read the text all the way through to get a general understanding before trying tofill the gaps Decide if the text is about the past, present or future

• Then look at the multiple-choice options Decide which word fits best Look at the wordsbefore and after each gap to help you

• You should not spend more than 10 minutes on this part of the test

Part 6

• You have to read five sentences which each describe a word You must identify the words andwrite them in the correct place on the Answer Sheet

• There will be an example to help you

• The first letter of each word is given

• You must spell the word correctly

• There is only one possible answer for each word

• All the words are connected to the same topic

Part 7

• You have to complete a letter by filling in the gaps

• Read the letter all the way through so you understand what it is about before you try and fill

in the gaps There will be an example to help you

• You should only write ONE word for each gap

• You should not spend more than 10 minutes on this part of the test

Part 8

• You have to read some information (e.g a notice and an email or a ticket and an advertisement)and use this information to complete some notes, a diary or some kind of booking form

Name: for example, don’t write your own name!

• You only need to write one or two words

• Sometimes you will be asked to write down a date or a price You need to read the two pieces

of information carefully to get the right answer because there may be more than one date orprice given

• You must spell all the words correctly so be very careful not to make mistakes when copying words

Part 9

• You have to write a short note, email, postcard or message

• You must read the instructions carefully and write down the THREE pieces of informationasked for

• Sometimes you have to follow instructions and sometimes you will have a short note, email

or message to answer

• Use your imagination It doesn’t matter if what you write is true or not The important thing is

to give all the necessary information and to write complete sentences

• Don’t worry too much about making spelling or grammar mistakes In this part of the test theexaminers want to see if you can successfully communicate a message in English

• You should not spend more than 10 minutes on this question

Paper 2 – LISTENING

What do I have to do in the test?

You should write your answer on the question paper You will have time to transferyour answers to the answer sheet at the end of the test

Part 1

• You will hear five short conversations between two people There will also be an example Youwill hear each conversation twice

• You will have time to read the questions before you listen

• You must listen and choose the correct answer A, B or C

• Each of the three options, A, B and C will be mentioned in the conversation, so you have to listenvery carefully to make sure you choose the correct answer

Part 2

• You will hear a conversation between two people You will hear this conversation twice

• You have to match two lists; e.g the names of people and the food they like You will hear theinformation in the same order as list 1-5

• Sometimes you will not hear exactly the same words that are on the lists because thespeakers use different ways to say the same thing For example, boat ride and river trip

• Remember that you only have to match five items on the first list (1-5) with five items fromlist (A-H) Two items in this list are there to distract you and one is the example

• You may hear all of these words (A-H) in the conversation so you need to think carefullybefore you choose the correct item in list (A-H)

Part 3

• You will hear a conversation between two people It may be a conversation between friends

or it may be a conversation in a shop or restaurant etc You will hear this conversation twice

• You will have time to read the questions through before you listen This will help you to knowwhat information you need to listen for

• You have to read the questions and as you listen choose the correct answer A, B or C Thequestions are in the same order as the information in the conversation

• Don’t worry if you miss one of the answers, you can listen for it the second time you hear therecording It is important to keep going because otherwise you may miss the answer to thenext question

• Sometimes, you will not hear exactly the same words that are in the questions because thespeakers use different ways to say the same thing The important thing is to choose theanswer with the correct meaning

• Usually all the options A, B and C are mentioned in the conversation You have to decidewhich one is the correct answer to show that you really understand what is being said Youshould always guess if you are not sure

• You only need to write ONE or TWO words

• You will have a few seconds to read the information on the question paper before you listen.Use this time to try and predict the kind of information you need to listen for Ask yourself: Do Ineed to listen for a name, a time, a date, a price, a telephone number? etc

How can I prepare for Part 2 of the test?

◆ Remember vocabulary not grammar is being tested here Learn the differences between words with similar meanings and opposites like:

◆ Practise reading similar texts (about people, places, important events).

◆ Learn how to guess the meaning of words you don’t know from the context.

◆ Practise doing multiple-choice reading activities Learn from your mistakes.

◆ Learn to spot the difference between ‘Wrong’ and ‘Doesn’t say’ options ‘Doesn’t say’ means it doesn’t say anything in the text about this.
