UNITED STATE’S VIEW

IN OUR OPINION, IN THE FIRST PLACE, THE EU BAN ON GM FOOD NOT ONLY IS HURTING OUR COMMERCE BUT ALSO IS DISCOURAGING DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

FROM GROWING GM CROPS FOR EXPORT

Trang 3

UNITED STATE’S VIEW

Source: Clive James, 2003

(An estimate for 2003)

The area of biotech crops is more and more

increasingly

 Therefore, ban on GM products of the US will

reduce the global production, leading to a fall in the

whole export value

Trang 4

CASE OF US IN PATICULAR

Consumer resistance in Europe is limiting US exports of GM food For example, the value of US soybean exports to the EU halved from US$2.1 billion in 1996 to $1.1 billion in 2000 (The EU is the USA's third-largest market for agricultural products) (Eva Cheng, 2003)

Animal feed exports to Sweden have been

“non-existent” since 1996, as farmers seek

to avoid GM feeds (USDA, 2002)

There is little prospect of US grains sales

to Germany due to consumer resistance to GMOs (USDA, 2002)

France is now sourcing its soy imports from Brazil because of the GM content of US Exports (USDA, 2002)

Trang 5

Case of other countries

Trade in GM section:

- Sub-Saharan Africa exports 16 % of its processed food products and 11 % of is meat and dairy products

- Low-income Asia exports 10 % of its processed food products and 13 % of its meat and dairy products

- South America exports 11 % of its processed food products

Argentina, Canada, and China are three other major GM producers:

- Argentina held the largest share - 90% of the soybean crop

- Canada - 62% of the rapeseed crop

- The United States - 55% of cotton, 50% of soybean and 33% of maize

Ban on GM products  serious influence

Trang 6

GMOs could reduce hunger and poverty in the world’s poorest nations

WHY DO WE BELIEVE THAT???

Trang 7

World Population

Country Name 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011

Arable Land per Person

Trang 8

We “would need four Earths” to sustain ourselves

Trang 9

More specifically

Globally, 1.5 billion people and 42 percent of the very poor live on degraded lands

Trang 10

Undernourishment Situation

Trang 11

GMOs allow for increased food production and more resilient and nutritious crops

How do GMOs help???

Trang 12

Uninformed European attitude causes unfounded fear

-> Many European has blocked the import of new biotech crops

Trang 13

EU is in violation of global trading rules

• In February 2006, WTO dispute panel ruled in favor of US, Canada and Argentina that EU and 6 member states had broken trade rules-> Violating SPS agreement

Trang 14

EU model could serve as blueprint for countries planning on regulating GMOs
