Airports Council International (ACI) has shared some exclusive

statistics with TRBusiness on the performance of the

non-aeronautical sector at global airports, split by region, as the

organisation goes public with the 20 th edition of the ACI World

Airport Economics Report.

In an exclusive interview with TRBusiness, ACI World’s Director General, Angela Gittens said that while some regions are seeing a plateau in terms of retail dominance (over other non-aero segments in terms of percentage share) others are still experiencing an upward trajectory [See table below].

“There is kind of a plateau in the more sophisticated airports in Europe, for example I think because of growth in middle class air travellers, revenue in some other regions could see an increase

“So I think, along with traffic, retail revenue’s percentage could increase in parts of Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America and in the Caribbean I think in North America it will probably increase some as they’re getting into more sophisticated and diverse offerings at more airports.”

RETAIL IS KING IN THE MIDDLE EAST

However, Gittens points out that revenue from retail concessions represents a significantly different share

of total non-aero revenue in different regions: “So in terms of percentage, yeah, it may go up a couple of percentage points; it may even reach as much as a third of the total global non-aeronautical income globally

“But as I said, there’s major markets like Europe that have been in this for quite some time and I don’t know how much more percentage growth is going to be there I mean there’ll be percentage growth, but I don’t know how much more market share of the total there’ll be.”

According to the first table (above) in this article retail concessions are most dominant in the Middle East region, where their revenue represents 53% of total airport non-aero revenue income

Asia Pacific comes in second with 44%; Latin American-Caribbean (34.2%); Europe in fourth (32.1%); Africa

in fifth (31.3%) and finally North America with 9.2%

RETAIL 28% OF NON-AERONAUTICAL REVENUE

Gittens also revealed to TRBusiness last week that in 2014 retail concessions made up 28% of total non-aeronautical revenue and food & beverage just 6% [See graph below].

“With a sample of over 800 commercial airports, in-depth analyses of air transport demand, airport

revenues and costs continue to be the bedrock of the report,” says ACI of its World Economics Report

“The main drivers of aeronautical and commercial revenues, and sources of airport costs, are analyzed over time and across various dimensions The link between airport size and financial performance is also examined within this context.”
