Important Information and Statistics

On 24* August, 1) , Ukraine proclaimed its independence from the USSR and began to construct a democratic

state This was a historic moment for Ukraine, as for many years its independence and culture had been in danger

Since the collapse of Kyivan Rus, present day Ukraine had been under pressure from Tatar, Polish and Turkish

invaders, all of them attempting to bring the people and land under one rule This threat was reduced with the

reunification of Ukraine and Russia in 2) This event happened at the Pereyaslav Rada under Bohdan

Khmelnytsky’s guidance For more than 250 years Ukraine was part of Russia, and in 1922, it became one of the

known expert on Ukrainian national costumes Tetyana, can you tell us the main features of the women’s

national costume?

Tetyana: Well, a woman's costume had many layers First, they put on a long embroidered sorochka that

looked like a narrow dress Then they took a piece of cloth called a plakhta and wrapped it around their

waist, and added a zapaska, which looked like an apron Women usually wore an embroidered blouse,

called a vyshyvanka, and their costume was trimmed with lace and ribbons

Presenter: It all sounds beautiful! Really bright and colourful What about Ukrainian headgear?

Tetyana: Unmarried women used to wear chaplets decorated with flowers, beads and multicoloured

ribbons Married women were not allowed to show their hair, so they covered it with a small hat called

an ochipok Sometimes women wore a khustka (a headscarf) or a namytka (a long white headband) over

an ochipok Men wore straw hats in summer, and high fur hats in winter In Western Ukraine, men often

decorated their hats with glass beads and feathers
