Sunroof
For the 911 Carrera (996) an electrically operated,
infi-nitely adjustable tilt-slide sunroof is available as an optional
equipment (RDW) and standard equipment for the North
American market The tilt function integrated in the
sunroof (opening height 28 mm) allows low-noise
ventila-tion of the vehicle's passenger compartment, even at high
speed
In contrast to the previous model 911 Carrera (993), the
roof opening is 18% larger (longitudinal direction) with
virtually the same width The small installation height of the
system increases head room by 36mm Direct coupling of
the actuator transmission to the sunroof motor has
resulted in a considerable reduction in operating noise
The sunroof is actuated via an illuminated rocker switch
which is integrated in the cover of the drive unit at the
front of the roof
Sunroof – 911 Carrera (997) (optional)
The electric sliding/tilting roof is available as an option on
the 911 Carrera/S (997) and is similar to the 911 Carrera
(996)
It is characterized by a low height and quiet running when
operated The noise optimized end position to which the
roof opens in response to "one-touch" opening has been
modified slightly to reduce the noise level (approx -10
mm) It can be opened beyond this point to its full extent,
if desired It is operated via the rear control unit
The switch has three switch settings corresponding to thefinal positions:
Close - Open - Tilt
The tilt-slide sunroof will operate:
l if the ignition is switched on (engine on or off)
l if the door is open
l if the door is closed and the ignition key is removed (butonly until the door is opened for the first time)
Similar to the window lifters, there are two operatingmodes for the sunroof:
1 One-touch function for open, close, and tilt.
Briefly pressing (approx < 300 ms) the appropriatebutton triggers automatic operation The sunroof can
be stopped at any position by briefly pressing thebutton again
2 Continuous operation for open, close, tilt, and lower.
The sunroof can be moved to the desired position bypressing the rocker switch The sunroof opens until itreaches a final low-noise position However, it can beopened completely by pressing the rocker switch again.Further closing functions are possible with the vehicle key:
l The roof can be moved to the desired position bypressing button in the remote control unit (at least 3seconds)
l The roof can be moved to the desired position byholding the vehicle key in the door lock at the lockingposition
Anti-jam Device
An anti-jam device which, if necessary, stops the motion ofthe sunroof and causes it to open again is integrated inthe closing cycle of the roof
Note:
If the vehicle is left unlocked for more than 2 hours, thesunroof can no be actuated (this is to protect the vehicle'sbattery)
Trang 8Page 1.4 “Hard” Roof & Body Systems
Emergency Operation
The fuse D 3 should be checked before emergency
operation is performed
1 Using your fingernails or a screwdriver, carefully unclip
both panels covering the infrared passenger
compart-ment monitors
2 Remove both screws.
3 Lower the rear end of the cover over the tilt/slide
sunroof drive Remove the angled hexagon socket
wrench from its holder
4 Insert the hexagon socket wrench into the drive axle.
Sunroof Emergency Operation
5 Push and hold down the hexagon socket wrench into
the drive axle Then rotate the wrench clockwise until
the tilt/slide sunroof is closed
6 Remove the hexagon socket wrench Close the cover
and screw in the screws
Note:
The tilt/slide sunroof must not be operated if emergency
operation has been performed
The sunroof is opened, closed, tilted, and lowered by theelectric drive (1) The system functions using a gearwheeland cables The cables are flocked The entire sunroof is asingle assembly unit (2) and is attached to the appropriatemounting points of the vehicle's roof frame using the bolts(3) The mounting points (6) which are screwed to the sidebrackets (8) with the bolts (7) are attached to the sunroofcover (5) The sunroof panel liner (9) is attached and made
of plastic
The side brackets form the connection between the cablesand actuate the wind deflector (10) When the sunroof isopened, the spring-loaded wind deflector raises automati-cally When the roof is closed, the guide slide pushes thewind deflector down by means of a wire Water drainagenozzles to which drainage pipes are connected areattached to the front and rear of the assembly unit
Note:
If the sunroof cover has been removed, the sunroof drivemust not be operated electrically
Trang 9“Hard” Roof & Body Systems Page 1.5
Adjustment
The height and opening gap of sunroof cover can be adjusted at the
labeled screws.
Initialization
The position of the sunroof is detected using Hall-effect
sensors The tilt position is used as the zero position and
stored in the EEPROM The drive calculates the number of
motor revolutions required for the “closed” and “open”
positions to be reached from the zero position
If the sunroof is being commissioned or the contents of
the memory have been lost, the drive unit must be
reinitial-ized Interruptions in the voltage supply, e.g if the
vehicle's battery is changed, will not result in memory loss
if the motor was not being operated at the same time
However, if the voltage is interrupted while the motor is
being actuated, reinitialization is required
Reinitialization can be performed at any time This is done
by holding down the rocker switch in the “close” position
for 10 seconds with the sunroof already closed The roof
then goes through the initialization procedure

Body – 911 Targa (996)
General
The 911 Targa (996) is basically the same as the 911
Carrera below the window line To achieve this the side
section, starting with the 911 Carrera Coupé, had to be
shortened below the window line The roof module (glass
sun roof, folding rear window, the roller blind for heat and
cold protection, including attachments and fasteners) is
at-tached to the basic bodyshell Both the windshield filler
panel between the windshield and the glass sun roof and
the side roof moldings are always finished in highly
polished black, regardless of the exterior body color
Luggage Compartment
With its vertically positioned high-pressure spare tire, the
911 Targa has the same luggage compartment as the
911 Carrera Coupé (996) with a capacity of 4.6 cu.ft
(130 liters) As a result of accessibility through the folding
rear window, the interior space is considerably more
useable and can be made more versatile by folding down
the rear seat backs In addition, the maximum storage
capacity of 8.1 cu.ft (230 liters) resulting from the
change in the roof line shape compared with the Coupé
Body Shell
The body structure of the 911 Targa is basically the same
as that of the Coupé The modifications and the changesmade to the Coupé for the 2002 model year to improverigidity were adopted
Targa Body Shell
The side roof frames have been improved in strength andrigidity Along with the reinforcing tubes integrated into theroof rails this results in an extremely strong passengercompartment
Front Water Drain
The drain pipe is located to the side at the assemblyframe for the roof module The hose for the water drain ispushed on and runs along the inner edge of the windshieldframe to the discharge opening at the hinge pillar
Trang 11“Hard” Roof & Body Systems Page 1.7

Glass Sun Roof
The glass roof consists of 7.45 mm thick VSG/TVG glass
(laminated safety glass/partially tempered glass) The
benefit of the types of glass used is first of all the splinter
characteristics of laminated safety glass The plastic foil
sandwiched between two sheets of glass prevents the
glass from splintering and thus eliminates the risk of injury
from glass fragments in the event of breakage Tempered
glass is used on the other hand to ensure meeting
required quality standards with its high dimensional
accuracy
To ensure low wind noise at the Coupé level even at high
speeds, a sealing system was developed that seals from
below The benefit of this sealing system is the increasing
sealing function at high speeds As a result of the
increas-ing vacuum on the outer contour of the roof, the large
glass roof is pushed farther into the sealing strip and is
thereby additionally sealed With the rest of the extensive
sealing measures an extremely high degree of tightness
and complete suitability for automatic car washes has
The wind deflector extends across the entire width of theroof opening The extension height, the design shape andthe approach angle were optimized with respect to draft-free driving, wind noise and drumming
The wind deflector itself consists of a black coated metal airfoil and is controlled automatically bymeans of a spring-loaded rotation and sliding mechanismwhen the glass roof is opened and closed

of the left-side cloth lining and is kept under tension by
means of a spring-loaded tensioner and deflection pulley
Roll-up Thermal Protection Sun Screen
A one-piece electrically operated roll-up sun screen islocated under the glass sunroof; it is attached to the sunroof frame and deploys forward The sun screen itselfconsists of a partially translucent black material, imparting
an impression of transparency even in the closed position. The material is retained in the center across the vehicle bymeans of a bow which conforms to the shape of the roof
In addition to providing increased headroom, the material
is prevented from billowing Because the sun screen is attached to the glass roof panel, it can be operated withthe roof panel in any open position

Body – 911 Targa (997)
General
The new 911 Targa 4/4S (997) has an unique glass roof
design, which combines the benefits of turbulence-free
“open-top driving” with the comfort and safety features of
a Coupé – in other words: a more rigid body combined
with a greater sense of safety When closed, the new 911
Targa 4/4S models with their bright, light immersed
inte-rior guarantee a unique driving experience
The new 911 Targa 4/4S unmistakeably bears the
features of the current 911 generation For the first time
ever, the new 911 Targa 4/4S models are available
exclu-sively with full time four-wheel drive and a body that is 44
mm wider in the rear area than the rear wheel drive 911
Carrera models
Body Shell
The body shell of the new 911 Targa 4/4S (997)
corresponds below the window line to the ‘wide body’
shape of the four-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4 Coupés The
rear quarter panels, which are 22 mm wider on both sides
in the rear area, and the adapted rear and side skirts are
characteristic of this body shape
The bodyshell is constructed as a light-weight design with
high strength and ultra-high strength steel Despite the
glass roof assembly and the additional body
reinforcements, the new 911 Targa 4 weighs only 3329
lbs (1510 kg) while the Targa 4S weighs 3384 lbs (1535
kg) (empty weight with manual transmission)
The roof assembly is bolted all the way around to thestructurally optimized and higher-strength bodyshell Gusset plates connect the roof structure to the adopted
911 Carrera 4 Coupé base Together with the 30 mmthick, high-strength steel reinforcement tubes, which areintegrated in the A-pillar and in the roof pillars, excellentbody rigidity is achieved that is almost on a par with theCoupé models The B-pillar goes from the body side panel
to the roof pillar, where it is welded in The roof pillarsform a continuous line from the A-pillar to the end of the C-pillar – with no gaps or connection points whatsoever

Passive Safety
Both 911 Targa 4/4S (997) models have a body shell
structure designed to suit the specific requirements of a
vehicle with a large roof opening area This body shell
structure is light-weight, has extremely high torsional
rigid-ity and includes all the design features required to provide
excellent passive safety
High-strength steel tubes and panels were used to
guaran-tee the required body rigidity despite the large body shell
opening in the roof, particularly in the event of a rollover
These 30 mm thick reinforcement tubes run through the
A-pillar, then through the entire roof pillar and end at the
C-pillar, where they are joined to the body base by strong
gusset plates
B-pillar Tube Reinforcement
The joint between the B-pillar reinforcement and inner
wheel housing has been modified by inserting a gusset
plate In addition to the 3-point automatic seat belts with
belt pre-tensioners and force limiters on the front seats,
the new 911 Targa 4/4S is equipped with six airbags as
standard These include two-stage full-size front airbags
for driver and front-seat passenger and the Porsche Side
Impact Protection system (POSIP) comprising one thorax
airbag in the front seat backrests, a separate head airbag
in the door trim panels and side impact protection in the
doors on each side of the vehicle. The linings on the side
roof pillars are designed as energy absorbing elements
and provide even greater protection for the occupants
The glass in the sliding sunroof is made of two-sheets of
partially prestressed laminated safety glass and complies
with DOT requirements With the 6.3 mm thick laminated
safety glass, a plastic film sandwiched between two 2.6
mm thick panes of laminated safety glass prevents the
glass from shattering, thereby reducing the risk of injury to
occupants in the event of an accident
Body Equipment, Exterior – 911 Targa (997)
General
The glass roof assembly integrated in the body gives the
911 Targa 4/4S (997) models a unique look Thesilhouette appears elegantly long thanks to the rear sidewindows, which converge in a point towards the rear, anddifferentiates it from the 911 Carrera models The sidedrip mouldings and the cowl panel cover are alwaysfinished in high-gloss black regardless of the exteriorcolor This Plexiglas cowl panel cover is located betweenthe windshield and glass sliding roof and gives a continu-ous glass-roof look all the way from the windshield to theback window The elegant design of the rigid roof line isfurther accentuated by the polished and anodizedaluminum side trim strip along the roof frame
Roof Assembly
The completely pre-assembled roof assembly is installedand bolted to vehicle bodyshell A sealing strip runs all theway around seals the joint between the roof assembly andbody

The complete roof assembly comprises
the following main components:
Trang 40Page 2.8 “Hard” Roof & Body Systems
The roof line and the division of glass areas is designed to
achieve as flat a look as possible when the glass sliding
roof is moved back under the rear window A compact
guide mechanism in the sliding sunroof ensures
comfort-able interior dimensions without forfeiting the roof line that
is typical of the 911
The maximum transport volume in the interior with the rear
seat backrests folded down is 8.1 cu.ft (230 liters),
thanks to the modified roof line guide and the further
recessed trim panel on the rear cross member, thereby
offering almost 1 cu.ft (25 liters) more space than in the
Coupé
The backbone of the glass roof assembly is an integral
steel-plate assembly frame, which accommodates the
glass sliding roof with drive mechanism, air deflector,
roller blind and hinged rear window as well as the closing
aid
The design and mechanics of the roof assembly areessentially the same as on the previous model 911 Targa(996) The assembly frame has an integrated water man-agement system, which clears away any water that dropsdown when the sliding sunroof or rear window is open Abar between the glass sliding roof and rear window is usedfor fitting center-joint and rear lid seals and for securingthe sliding roof seal
The complete roof assembly is secured to the roof pillars, the windshield frame and the rear cross members from below Black tinted Plexiglas covers, with their thinly pro-truding rubber lips overlapping the glass elements, form aflush transition to the body They not only minimize windnoise, but their black, high-gloss surface also adds to theglass look
The lift mechanism joins the glass sliding roof to theassembly frame and its guides On the new 911 Targa4/4S (997) models, this lift mechanism has an optimizedspring mechanism with three cup springs, which absorbstransverse acceleration caused by vehicle movements andprevents noises, particularly on bad road surfaces Whenlowering the roof, the lift mechanism is guided in a two-section plastic gate link, which is riveted to the sides ofthe assembly frame
Guide rails are riveted to the retaining frame of the roof assembly at the left and right to facilitate longitudinalmovement of the glass sliding roof Two sliding blocks, which carry the sliding roof, run to the left and right ineach of these aluminum rails Damping with respect to thevertical axis has been improved by using a new limit stop
in the guide rail
