A drag means you hurt something ,or you slow something or cost a problem for
something
For example : Mom is a drag on the business means Mom is carring a problem for the business ,she slowing the business.In this story ,she is carring a problem for the business ,she falling the business down Ok ,let’s start the letter
20 year ago , my sister and I bough a business from our mother It was a Mom’s
business
Later,she sold the business to her daughter So now ,the daughter own the
business.Their
Mom is not the owner now She was in the past ,but now ,her daughter own the
business
and they love their Mom and their Mom love them …
• “pay-off means “finish paying”
• “Draw” means “take” or “to take” You know the meaning of “draw” ,”drawing
with the pencil” But here ,draw meaning diffirent It mean “take” Mom still take
a salary
• “Salary” means “your payment every month” She draw the salary ,so sister still
pay her they pay her to buy the business ,they also pay her a salary Like an
employed May be $10 per hour ,they pay their Mom for doing work And they
pay mom two diffirent things
• “Above and beyond” means “more than” ,or “also” or “an addition to” or “plus”

• “Workload” means “how much what you do” If you have a heavy workload ,then you are very busy at work.You have a lot work to do If you have a light
workload , it’s easy job Lessen means make smaller
• “Retired” means “stop working” Mom said : “No no, I will go crazy ,I don’t want
to work less, I want to come every day” They say she could still come in to the
office as often as she want She could come every day and do her personal paper work,these are all thing she does at work –on the clock
• “On the clock” means “when you are working ,during work time”
They paying Mom but Mom doesn’t help them with business,she writing letter
to her friend,reading book She not doing work.But she want the daughter to continue paying her So,it’s problem
If we try to discuss this ,Mom get hurt when they tell Mom : “ Mom ,you costing
money ,but you are not working” Mom get hurt and say : “ Just let me know when I’m not worth the money” We hope she would see the fairness of this and suggesst it herself
They don’t want to fighter Mom ,they don’t want to make her quit She hope
Mom will understand by herself
(Last paragraph ), “business expenses are going though the roof ”
• Expenses means “cost” ,money you payout Opposite of “income” “Income”
means money “coming in” ,”expenses” means money coming out So the business expenses cost are going through the roof
• “Going through the roof” means “going up very fast”, cost are increasing So,they are lossing a lot money

• “Update” means “improvement” They need improve the business and make it better While we are paying Mom at the level we are ,so they can’t continue to pay Mom for time Because ,the business is losing money ,they can’t pay her that

• “On top of” means “also”, “in addition to” ,or “ above and beyond” or “plus”,they both a same thing
• “Buy out” means you buy a business from someone else they buy a
They are buying the business from their Mom ,so they say it is too
expensive ,we must pay Mom to buy buy the business ,plus we must pay her salary every
hour There are too much
