I Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to

- develop such reading micro-skills as guessing meanings of words in context

and scanning for specific ideas through True/ False and Table Completion

questions

- use the information they have read, listened and watched to talk about New

York City

II Teaching method: integrated, communicative

III Teaching aids:

- Textbook: “Tieng Anh 10” (Student’s book)

- Chalk, Board

- PowerPoint

IV Anticipated problems

- Students may not have sufficient vocabulary to read, listen and talk about

the topic, so T should be ready to help them

Warm-up

- To create interest, engage Ss and lead in the lesson.

Game:

- Have Ss work in two groups

- Show Slide 2

- Ask Ss to list the well-known places that appear in the clip

- Call group representatives to write the answers on the board

- Watch the video clip carefully

- Write the answers on the board

- Play the clip again to check and declare the winner (Slide 3,4)

- Elicit information about the places that are also mentioned in

the textbook (Before you read).

- Share what they know about the well-known places with the whole class

(Expected:

+ The Empire State Building: in Manhattan, built in 1931, the tallest building for the next 40 years

+ Central Park: most visited city park in the United States

+ Times Square: famous for Broadway theatre, cinemas and supersigns + The UN Headquarters: since 1952; in Turtle Bay neighborhood, on

spacious grounds overlooking East River

background knowledge and lead in the reading.

- Show Slide 5 and ask Ss to give some general information about New York as in the diagram

(Do not correct the wrong information because the aim to activate their background knowledge)

- Show Slide 6 for Ss to know about the location of New York

- Tell Ss they will know whether they are correct or not by reading the text on page 157

- Tell what they know about New York

- Look at the map and determine the location (Expected: Southeastern part of New York State)

- To give Ss practice in guessing meaning from context, scanning for specific information and doing True/ False task.

Task 1 Guessing meaning in context

- Ask Ss about the strategies to do this kind of exercise:

- Show slide 7 (Locate the context

by using hyperlink; use the first phrase ‘metropolitan region’ as an example.)

- Have Ss do the task

- Check the answers by using slide

6 (Press Enter for each answer)

Task 2 True/False Questions

- Introduce the task by showing slide 9

- Check if Ss can answer the T/F

Qs after their first reading

- If not, have them do the task by underlining the keys words, locate them in the text, read around these words carefully to find the

answers

- Check the answers by showing slide 10 (Press Enter for each answer.)

Task 3 Table Completion (Adapted from Task 3 in the textbook).

- Introduce the task (Slide 11)

- Have Ss fill in the table

- Call on some Ss to read aloud their answers

- Check by pressing Enter (Slide

- Answer the questions (Expected: Locate the words in the context, guess the meanings and look through the given definitions to choose the most suitable ones.)

- Call on some groups to express their opinions

- Watch the video clip and answer the questions
