Trang 8WRITING TASK 1 Model Answer
From the line graph we can see an interesting trend in the numbers of people taking cycling holidays
in the UK between 2003 and 2009 From its starting figure of approximately 74,000 in 2003, the
number fell quite sharply over the next two years reaching its lowest point of the period at just under
40,000 in 2005 From this point however the numbers increase sharply over the next year to just
under 60,000 and continue to rise, though less steeply, to just under 90,000 by 2009
From the table we can see the distribution of this trend by gender and age Back in 2003 by far the
largest group taking cycling holidays in the UK were males between the age of 30 and 49 At that time
this group accounted for approximately 38,000, or about half of the total The second largest group in
this year was females between 19 and 30 who made up around 13,000
Over the following two years a slump in numbers can be seen across all the groups The biggest
decline was again in the group of males between 30 and 49 The number virtually halved in these two
years
From 2005 onwards the increase in numbers seems to take on a different distribution Although there
is a steady increase from the most significant group, males between 30 and 49, from 18,000 in 2005 to
29,000 in 2009, there are also significant gains in the other groups, as well Over the same period,
numbers for males 18-30, males 50+, females 30-49 and females 50+ more than trebled Females
18-30 increased by approximately 40%
These trends would seem to suggest that the popularity of cycling holidays in the UK will continue to
grow in the future across all groups

Trang 9tourist sites are not ruined by this heavy tourism
The main reason why we travel to tourist destinations is because we have a keen interest in those
places and what they have to offer These days, before we even arrive, we have probably visited several
websites about the destination It seems there is an opportunity here for official websites to paint the
right picture For example, official websites should aim to be easy to understand, available in many
languages and, above all, should inform potential visitors of the beauty and history of the area In this
way more people would fully appreciate the place they are visiting
A second initiative, which could be taken during the visitors stay, would be to have sufficient
reminders to tourists as to what is expected of them For instance, giving out free informative flyers at
each site including reminders about, for example, not taking photographs, refraining from smoking
and not dropping litter, could also help preserve the sites
To preserve the conditions of any tourist attraction usually requires finance A third initiative
therefore which could be taken is to ensure that a reasonable amount of income is generated from the
tourism and that this income is used solely for the maintenance of the tourist attraction Clearly for
this measure to be effective, as with all measures, a collaborative effort is required by the local
government and the local people
In conclusion, it seems inevitable that as a result of any tourism the tourist site itself will undergo a
change However, this change does not have to be a negative one if certain measures are taken to
educate visitors and to ensure that sufficient levels of finance are raised
