INTRODUCE THE TITLE AND AUTHOR Discuss the

title and the author of China: Now and Then

Ask students what the photographs on the

cover suggest about the title Lead them to

connect the title to social studies

BUILD BACKGROUND Point to China on a map of

the world Encourage students to share what

they already know about China Students may

know about the Great Wall, Chinese cuisine, and

Chinese New Year

PREVIEW/USE TEXT FEATURES As they preview,

encourage students to share their comments

and predictions about the book Lead them to

look carefully at the photographs for support

of their predictions

READ THE BOOK

SET PURPOSE Have students set a purpose for reading by looking at the photographs on the cover Ask: What do you think the photograph

at the bottom shows? Could the city at the top be in the United States? What are you most interested in learning about China’s past

or present?

STRATEGY SUPPORT: PREDICT As students come

to page 14, suggest that they predict what the section about transportation will be about

Prompt them to look at the photographs and read the captions to refine their predictions

Record students’ predictions to discuss and confirm after reading page 15

one of the following sections: Government,

Arts and Entertainment, and Sports Have

each group complete a Venn Diagram about their section and present it to the class

PREDICT Before reading, call attention

to the title of book Ask students to predict

how the information in the text will be organized Remind them that predicting the text structure will help them recognize the similarities and differences between China now and then During reading, pause and confirm students’ predictions Encourage students to share comments and questions about the strategy

ADDITIONAL SKILL INSTRUCTION

DRAW CONCLUSIONS Review with students

that when you draw a conclusion you make

a sensible decision or a reasonable opinion about it Practice this skill using the Venn Diagrams students completed in small groups Have students return to their groups and trade diagrams with other groups
