By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to write a summary of a biography of a person basing

on a given text

Ss may have difficulty to get main points for the summary

WARM-UP Guessing game

Ask Ss to work in groups

Provide three clues about the word Biography and ask Ss to guess the

word in the first clue, they get 30 points, 20 points in the second clue

and 10 points in the third clue

1. It provides you with background information of a person.

2. It has 9 letters.

3 It begins with letter B.

PREPARATION 1

Explain the definition of a summary:

A summary is the definition of the main points of a passage Writing a

summary will help you to understand the text better

Ask Ss to work in pairs: Read the paragraph 1 of the passage and

answers the question in the book

Call on some Ss to read the answer aloud in front of the class

Feedback and give correct answer:

1. She was born in English in 1821

2. She emigrated to New York City when she was ten

3. She wanted to become a doctor

4 It was difficult for her to realize her dream because she was a woman in the nineteenth century

Keep Ss in pairs and ask them to read the sample summary made from

the answers to the above questions

Note Ss that the summary must be brief, clear and able to present the

main point of the original text

Whole class and pair work

Ask Ss to work in groups to discuss and make questions on the main

ideas of paragraph 2

Go around the class and provide help when necessary

Call on some Ss from different groups to explain their answer in front

Group work

Make necessary comments and corrections

Give suggested answers:

1. Why couldn’t Elizabeth Blackwell further her education in

Paris in 1849? What prevented her from furthering her education in 1849?

2. Why was it difficult for Elizabeth Blackwell to start her own

practice upon returning to the <st1:country-region w:st="on">US</st1:country-region>?

3. What did she do in 1857?

4 What else did she do for women in the <st1:country-region

w:st="on">US</st1:country-region>?

Suggested answers:

1. She couldn’t further her education in Paris in 1849 because

of her serious eye infection.

2. It was difficult for her to start her own practice because she

was a woman doctor.

3. In 1857, she opened a new hospital for women and children

in the <st1:country-region w:st="on">United States</st1:country-region>.

4 She established the first medical school for women

Explain possible words and phrases:

Emigrate: leave one’s country to live in another one><immigrate (di

cư>< nhập cư)

Application (n): applying, request for smt (đơn xin học)

Tuition (fee) (n): money paid for education at school (học phí)

Surgeon (n): a doctor skilled at surgery (bác sĩ phẫu thuật)

Abandon (n): give up (từ bỏ)

Physician (n): a doctor authorize to practice medicine (bác sĩ)

Founder (n): a person who established an organization, a company, a

school, ect (người sáng lập)

Tell Ss to work independently and write a summary for paragraph 2

basing on the answers to the above questions

Ask Ss to compare their writing with a friend and cross check

Pick up some typical writing and correct the mistakes in front of the

class

Give suggested answer:

In 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell couldn’t further her education in Paris

revise the Wh-questions through various exercises.

Ss may not know the meaning of some compound adjectives

V Procedure

WARM-UP Jumbled Words

Divide the class into small groups

Give each group one card containing 10 words whose letters are

jumbled

Ask Ss to rearrange the letters to make good words

The group which finishes the task first with the most correct words will

be the winner

E.G:

compound adjectives Write them in column C Number 3 in the book

Explain the meaning of the words:

Man-made: nhân tạo

Duty-free: miễn thuế

Keep Ss in pairs and ask them to complete the sentences in b) by using

the above compound adjectives

Call on some Ss to read the sentences a loud in front of the class

EXTENSION

Note that a compound adjective is made up of two different words and

sometimes three The second part of the compound can be a present

participle (e.g., looking) or a past participle (e.g., known).

If time allowed, ask Ss to do the following extension:

Complete the compound adjectives in the sentences Use the words

in the box.

3. When I saw her last night, she was dancing with a good-

young man in a white suit.

Advise Ss to study the answers and the suggested words in the bracket

in order to write the correct questions

their answers on the notebook
