Unit 4 Volunteer work and Lieteracy progams

1 Objectives:

 Knowledge of volunteer acitvities in Vietnam

 Benefits from doing volunteer activities

 Expressing gratitude and responding to thanks

 Writing a thank-you letter

 Language focus:

- Adjectives derived from Nouns

- Reported speech

2 Visual teaching aids

 Board and chalk

 Pictures relating to the topic

 A tape and cassette player

 Handout

 Vocabulary paper attached

3 Student’s level: 10th -form students

4 Class size: 40-50 students

5 Student’s background knowledge:

 Students have some vocabulary and background knowledge relating to volunteer activities

 Students have known how to solve some social problem

 Students have soem knowledge of thank expression

6 Duration: 7 periods (45 minutes for each period)

A Reading

1 Objectives:

 Read about volunteer work: checking facts, scanning for details

 Building vocabulary of various task of volunteer work

 Enhancing the reading skill through a new kind of exercise: completing a diagram

2 Duration: 90 minutes

3 Aids: Textbook, board and chalk

4 Stage of the lesson

Greet the Ss and tell them to settle down

Warm-up:

Lead in: Ask students to work in groups and discuss about volunteer works

* Suggestion ideas:

 Have you ever seen a student in blue uniform?

 Do you know what they are called?

 Can you name some jobs/ activities they often do?

 When does the volunteer campaign take place?

- Then call on some students to present their ideas to the whole class

- Work in group to answer the question by the teacher

Expected answer:

- Volunteer campaign

- They often help local/ countryside people in building road, house,

- They teach poor children, teach them how to read and write

- Have students look at the three pictures, and match them with the suitable activities that

listed below, guide them to describe the picture and give their comments by asking about the

texture of the picture ( children, teacher, region, etc.)

- Call some of them to describe the pictures, then idetify the name to the picture

- Individual work, try to describe the activities shown in the pictures

- Answer to the teacher

Expected answer:

+ Pic A: An evening class for poor children + Pic B: Countryside in the south of Vietnam, vu\olunteer help local people reapir the damaged roads

+ Pic C: Volunteers organize games activities for local children

While – reading

page

- Tell students to read the text in silent, hightlight the new words or expression

- If available, play the tape of reading text If not, divide the text into 2 parts and then call

students to read it out loud

+ While reading, teacher can correct the student’s pronunciation

- Read the text in silent, highlight the new words and phrases

- Read out loud the text, other listen to the reader and scan for information.

- Ask students to give the new words or phrases that they’ve found  explain the meaning and

form of word in both English and Vietnamese

- Listen to the teacher and write down in their note books

* Reading comprehension

- Task 1 <Exercise a, page 46>

+ Let students handle the task in pair: Read the text to indicate the activities done by the

students volunteers at Hiep Phuoc Village

- Work in pair Discuss the answer and check for the relevant statement

+ Ask students to exchange the answer to cross-check

 call some of them to read out loud their answers to the whole class

+ Key: 2-3-4-5

- Exchange answer to cross-check

- Check and correct answer.

+ Have students work in group to find out more benefits gained by doing volunteer works - Discuss to find out the information

+ Guide them use some structures to express their idea

Help Somebody do something in Sth/ Gerund

+ Ask students to exchange answer

Expected answer:

1 – Volunteer work helps develop their interpersonal skills, attain mutual understanding

2 - Volunteer work helps promote their friendship

3 - Volunteer work helps them discover their talents

- Exchange and correct the answers

Post-reading

- Task 3 <Exercise c, page 47>

+ Form students to work in a groups of 4

+ Tell them to discuss to find the main cause leading to literacy problem by filling the blank

bubbles

+ Go round to join the group and provide helps when necessary

+ Call some students to explain their ideas in front of the class

Many children in remote area cannot read and write because they’re not sent to school

Most adults in remote village are still illiterate so they do not take special care of their children’s

education

+ Work in group of 4, discuss to find out the causes + In necessary, ask teacher for help (vocabulary, expression etc, )

+ Express their ideas to the whole class,

Lack of good teachers and good teaching conditions is also a decisive factor.

Schools in remote areas cannot provide enough seats for children

+ According to their cause of literacy they’ve found, find the solution to this problem due to their

knowledge of social matters

+ Teacher may give some clues/ new work.

+ Go round to share ideas and give help if necessary.

- Work in group, discuss the solution

+ Call each groups’s representative to express their ideas.

+ Tell students of other groups to give feedback question + Express group’s ideas in front of the class. + Give feedback to the other students + Collect the ideas and give the most relevant solutions.

There should be activities to show that going to school is compulsory for children and the

necessity of being educated to survive and live in the community

The government should take certain measures to ensure teachers’ good living and teaching

conditions

Local authorities should show considerable concern about building more schools and providing

convenient transportation so as to encourage children to go to school
