“Had better/‘d better” is used to express a strong advice.. “had better” can be replaced by “ought to” or “should” or “if I were” Example: they had better start revising.. Short form:

“Had better” has a past form but the meaning it carries is present or future.
“Had better” is always followed by a verb in the infinitive without “to”
Example: you’d better see a doctor for your toothache
I had better not go out now it’s stormy
