I-I read and I understand
1 “ Can I open the window, please? It’s too hot in here.” The pupil asks the teacher.
2 “Yes you can ” The teacher answers.
3 Kevin loves foreign languages, he can read and write in English.
4 But he can’t say much in Spanish yet.
5 Pupils must pay attention and work hard in class.
6 They must be on time and respect everybody.
7 Pupils mustn’t chat or chew gum in class.
8 They mustn’t write on the tables.
II- I learn the new grammar rule
CAN and MUST are two modal auxiliaries They are no verbs
They are always followed by a verb base: can / must + VB
They are invariable
They can be used with all the personal pronouns
CAN expresses REQUEST sentence 1
PERMISSION sentence 2 CAPABILITY sentence 3 INCAPABILITY (can’t) sentence 4
MUST expresses OBLIGATION: sentences 5 and 6
INTERDICTION (mustn’t) sentences 7 and 8
