Lesson Type & Subject: Giving Advice to a friend in a letter.

Materials Needed: 4 Handouts; Teacher’s Notebook; Problem cards (WE2 Ch 11) Grammar Handout Homework!

Lesson Objective: Learn phrases to give advice to others Write a letter giving a friend advice for

his/her problem

Assumptions: Ss have seen the conditional before Ss have had a class on basic letter writing

format before (dear name, …paragraphs sincerely, Katrina)

Anticipated Problems & Solutions:

Problem1 – Ss have not seen the conditional before

Solution 1 – briefly write “If I were you I would /you should/could ” on the board for them to fill in the blanks

Problem 2 – Minji and Yong-suk will talk too much in Korean

Solution 2 – Pair them differently Ask them to change seats

Purpose of Procedure: Present topic of stating problems and asking for advice

Practice saying “I have a problem… What do you think I should do?” in different ways

Presentation: Introduce “I have a problem” phrases

1) T starts class with “Hey guys Oh my gosh, I can’t believe it! I have a big problem! Last night, while my roommate was sleeping, I accidently broke his brand new Wii!

I don’t know what to do I haven’t seen him yet What do you think I should do? 2) Ss respond

3) T introduces topic We’re going to talk about problems and giving advice for

solutions

4) T asks Ss “How can you ask for advice?” Write list on board

5) T writes equation: (Problem) + What do you think I should do?/What do you

suggest? What would you do (in this situation)? On the board

Practice: Ss tell each other that they have a problems.

1) T instructs Ss to express problems to their partner: “(Name) I have a problem,

Choose from envelope) , (phrase from board).” Example: Kyung-bum, I’m having a hard time learning English What do you think I should do?

2) Ss practice in pairs Express 2-3 problems each

Presentation: Introduce Different Ways to Give Advice.

1) T writes Different Ways to give advice on the board (see homework handout)

2) T goes over Have you thought about….? Why don’t you ….?

Production: Ss express a problem and give each other advice

1) T distributes handouts

2) Ss work alone for a few minutes writing answers for their partner’s problems

3) S (a) expresses problem S (b) gives advice

4) Ss work back and forth until hand out is completed

5) T monitors Ss and makes corrections to their written work as need be

Purpose of Procedure: To correct mistakes, address questions and review homework for the night

Language Check / Homework review

1) T writes errors she has heard during the class on the board (erroneous sentences or

commonly mispronounced words, etc) Ss write down incorrect sentences in their notebook 2) Ss collectively attempt to make needed corrections to the erroneous sentences By

reading the sentences out loud in the correct way If correct, S writes corrections on the board T corrects troublesome sentences on the board if Ss are unable to find the mistake on their own Ss write corrections in their book

What advice should you give your friend?

(1) Your friend has been drinking a lot

(2) Your friend has a test tomorrow but is playing computer games

(3) Your friend is gambling all his money

(4) Your friend is going hiking but it looks like it will rain

(5) Your friend wants to go fishing but you heard a typhoon warning

(6) Your friend stays up too late playing on the internet and is sleepy in class

Dear Sydney,

If I were in your position, I would stop playing video games You could spend some time studying for your test tomorrow instead of playing video games I want you to get a good grade,

so you should study more Why don’t you play your game for half an hour, and then study for an hour? I hope this helps

Dear Jared,

I know you want to go hiking tomorrow but it looks like it will rain Maybe you could bring an umbrella or a rain poncho? But if I were you, I would not go hiking in the rain Why don’t you change your plans and just go another day? I think that would be the best idea
