There is a genesis legend of the ‘Three Holy Beings’ (三性神話) that has been passed

down through generations in Jeju In this legend, three holy gods are the protagonists

who married the three princesses from Byeokrangguk of the East Seas who brought

cattle, horses and the 5 types of grain seeds on their wooden boat This marked the

be-ginning of a growing civilization It has been widely recognized that there was already

an ancient nation called ‘Tamna’ during the Three Kingdoms period while the name

‘Jeju’ came to be adopted during King Gojong’s reign in the Goryeo Dynasty

4 Geology·Topography·Climate

The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is the biggest island in South Korea About

1.2 to 1.7 million years ago, lava erupted through a series of volcanic explosions and it

rose out of the ocean Then, about 300 thousand to 1 million years ago, because of the

lava flow which erupted through volcanic activity, it led to the rise of Mt Halla Finally,

about 25 thousand years ago, with one last massive volcanic explosion, the Baekrokdam

by post volcanic actions The topographical nature consists of 3˚~5˚ of relatively gentle slopes on the east and west sides going along Mt Halla while the north and south side has steeper inclines of about 5˚ The special feature about this is that this region is the world’s largest lava cave zone and up to 60 or so caves have been confirmed to date The climate is clearly divided into continental and oceanic climates according to seasons In the winter, there is a huge difference in temperatures between night and day while in the summer, it is humid with a large amount of rainfalls The average temperature through-out the year maintains a 16˚C, with the hottest summer weather recording a 33.5˚C, while the coldest month of January recording a 1˚C making it have the least difference

in annual range in South Korea You can however expect to see lots of wind blowing with quite a few foggy days

5 Jeju’s Representative Fruit, Tangerine

It can be said that tangerines represent Jeju During the fall season when the fruits are ripening, it is quite easy to see tangerine fields on almost all parts of Jeju The tangerines were cultivated and grown to be presented as tributes to the central administrative de-partment after the Goryeo period The records about these tributes of tangerines can be found in the painting called the ‘Tamna Inspection Scene’ executed by the Jeju Governor Lee Hyeongsang during King Sukjong’s reign The tangerines which are being culti-vated currently have their origins in the 15 Satsuma Mandarins which were brought into Jeju by a French priest in 1911 from Japan who consequently planted them in Seogwipo

With this as a beginning, a series of tangerine fields were created in Seogwipo with its warm climatic conditions leading to the spread of said fruit being produced all over the island now
