Fine, thanks I am going to stay in Vietnam during Lunar New Year What do you usually do to prepare for it?

Well, about a week before Tet, I will clean and decorate

my house, stock up on groceries for several days because all shops are closed during the first 3 days of the holiday

Is there any special ritual that only Vietnam has?

Here it’s a tradition to pay debts in advance to start the year debt free At home, Vietnamese families will set up an altar with fruits and flowers to show respect to their ancestors

Besides, there is a farewell ceremony for the Kitchen Gods

on their yearly visit of Heaven

What is that ceremony? It sounds interesting!

Well, it is in the noon of the 23th of lunar December The

Kitchen Gods will return to the Heaven to report to the Jade

Emperor (Ngọc Hoàng) on activities of each family over the

past year By worshiping the gods with the ceremony, we

hope they will only report our good side

So I guess that’s the last ceremony ofthe old year?

Not really, Alex About a week after that, there will be the

End of the Year ceremony, when all family members gather

We believe that when the whole family says prayers and

burns incense, we are inviting ancestors to join the family

That’s just a traditional custom but I think it’s always a great

time for the reunion of all family members, living and dead

You make me miss my family so much We also gather on

Christmas and New Year Eve, but we don’t burn incense to

invite the ancestors By now, I see the Tet atmosphere is

shopping I need to buy some jam, clothes and household

equipment for the holiday

And I will buy some red envelop, the children next door

We decorate the house with peach blossoms or apricot

blossoms, and some other kinds of plants and flowers, for

example kumquat tree or sunflower I will go to the flower

I’m not sure if that will come true or not But let’s see

You get along so well with life in Vietnam, Alex! As I

mentioned before, Tet is probably the most exciting time

for both adults and children Children often eagerly wait

for their lucky money, and adults have time to visit their

relatives and friends This year I am going to pagoda to

pray for love

Don’t worry too much about it, Vietnamese is not so strict

with foreigners about that But for your information, during

Tet we want to avoid saying bad things like death and

arguing with others We also don`t sweep the house

because doing that will make money going out of the

house

What? You can even pray for love in a pagoda?

I almost forgot this important thing: is there

anything I should avoid doing during Tet?

I will remember those taboos Now I’m ready to

enjoy my first Tet in Vietnam!
