Name: ……… Date: ……… ……

We know that some nouns are names given to

activities These nouns are special, because

they end with “-ing”.

Examples:

Dancing, hiking, singing, jogging

These are called gerunds To spot a gerund,

replace the word which ends with “-ing” with

just one noun.

Example:

She likes dancing.

Replacement: she likes apples.

If we can substitute easily and correctly

(grammatically), then we have spotted a

gerund.

Sometimes, we find a gerundive phrase in a

sentence,

Example:

He dislikes going to the market.

To get the full meaning of that part of the

sentence, we must consider the gerundive

phrase as a whole.

Examples:

We went hiking with our classmates (hiking

with our classmates is the gerundive phrase)

Andy went jogging this morning with his sister

(jogging this morning with his sister is the

gerundive phrase)
