Type of Drugs

 People use Drugs when they are referring to Medicine Medicine are usually grouped by

the effect on their body Some commonly

used Medicines are Aspirin, Excedrin, Midol, and Penicillin Vaccines are made from

preparations of dead and weakened germs Vaccines cause the immune system to

produce antibodies

Drugs- Substances other than food that changes

the structure of the body and mind

 Medicine- Drugs that are used to prevent or treat diseases and other conditions

 Vaccine- They medicines that are injected or taken to prevent diseases

Medicines that fight Germs

 Many Germs and diseases cannot be prevented with

vaccines Medicines are used to restore peoples health

Antibiotics come in many different types They are usually sold in liquid or tablet form Each type of antibiotic fights only a certain type of bacteria For example penicillin is

highly effective antibiotic that cause strep throat and

pneumonia Antibiotics do not kill infections caused by

viruses.

 Medicines that reduce or kill harmful bacteria

in the body

Pain Relief and other Medicines

 About 20 billion pain killers are sold annually Aspirin is the most sold Doctors prescribe pain killers when

people are recovering from a serious illness They may cause dependence Some are used to treat people with certain problems such as high blood pressure Some have negative effects More medications are taken to relive the negative effects So they are just taking more medicine

Reactions to Medicine

 One type is a Side effect If you experience a

side effect, consult a physician and stop taking the medication When a person takes a drug for

so long and your body builds up an immune to it,

this is called a tolerance When two types of

medications are mixed, it seriously cause

problems The FDA( food and drug

administration.) approves all of the medication Before put up for sale, has to be tested by the

FDA The chart on the next slide shows the

process of making new medications.

 Side effect- Any reaction to the medicine that occur other than intended

 Tolerance- When a person body is used to the effect of the drug and needs a greater amount to have the same effect

Prescription and OTC

 In order for a certain medication, a person

has to have a prescription When some one

needs a drug but not a very strong one they

go and get an over the counter OTC meds

can be bought at any drug store Do not use OTC’s for more than 10 days NEVER

OVERDOSE ON ANY MEDICATIONS

 Prescription- Medications that can only be sold with a written form from a physician

 OTC- Medicines that are safe enough to take with out an order from a physician

 Although medicine is used to help people,

people use it for the wrong reasons When taking medication keep it in a high place It is very easy for children to get a hold of

medicine When a child is taking a medicine have an adult give them the recommended amount and grab it for them
