Trang 3

What are the differences between qualitative and quantitative method?

What are the major research methods?

Trang 4

The differences between qualitative

and quantitative methods :

Qualitative Methods Quantitative Methods

Collecting non-numeric data Collecting numerical data that can

be quantified Methods include focus

groups, in-depth interviews,

and reviews ,content

analysis,observation

Methods include questionnaire surveys,reviews, content

analysis,observation

This is an inductive process

which is used to formulate

theory.

This is a deductive process which

is used to test pre-specified concepts, constructs, and hypotheses that make up a theory

It describes a problem or

condition from the point of

view of people experiencing it

it provides observed effects of a program on a problem or

condition

Trang 5

( Qualitative Methods ) ( Quantitative Method )

Can be valid and reliable:

depends on the measurement device or instrument

Take less time on the

planning end and more time

during the analysis process

Take more time on the planning end and less time during the analysis process

Less generalizable More generalizable

Trang 8

• It is a research project by looking at

sources like encyclopedias and other reference books, CD-ROMs, community surveys, government reports and

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

data.

Trang 9

• Tell us what is already known about your research area.

• These information you collect will be both qualitative and quantitative.

Trang 10

It is used for historical research

FOR EXAMPLE: create a new kind of medicine , a new machine for

education,agriculture,Industry

Trang 11

It is a method which we carry out

interviewing small number of people

(ten or less) from whom you need a lot

of detailed information, consider using individual in-depth interviewers

Typically we would develop a list of

open-ended questions and base your interview around these.

Trang 12

FOR EXAMPLE Hypothesis :students nowadays are lazier than ones

in the past Interview some experienced Headmasters, teachers

Trang 13

A hypothesis “Students whose major is English at Tay Nguyen University are very deligent”

Interview some teachers who taught

them and ask if they agree or not

Interview some students how many time they spend for studying

Trang 14

A focus group is similar to an in- depth interview but you gather the information for a small discussion group, usually up to eight people.

Trang 15

For example:

We want to know if the teaching method that teacher A use is effective or not We interview about 5 groups of students in

different classes who used to learn with his method.

Trang 16

They are useful for explanatory and evaluate researches

Trang 17

It is a method which we use to analyze existing material such as newspapers,

historical and other documents, television programs, magazines or books.

Trang 18

It is used for descriptive , explanatory and evaluative research

Trang 19

If we want to analyze “climate change", you can use the information on newspapers,

historical documents

FOR EXAMPLE

Trang 20

For example:

We analysize a graph which show world population growth or show the number of people who suffer from AIDS in Africa to find out how it changes and what

information we can collect.

Trang 21

It is a method which we look at or observing some form of behaviour

Trang 22

It is used for descriptive and evaluative research

FOR EXAMPLE

Evaluate the quality of A high school

By observing students at this high school.

Do they go to school on time?

Are they aware of protecting public

properties?

How do their attitudes towards study?

Do they follow the principles of the school?

Trang 23

It is the method that we participate in what we are researching

Trang 24

It is used for descriptive and evaluative research

For example

Evaluating the food quality of a restaurant,we

participate in observing the way the chefs cook

Trang 25

For example

Evaluating the food quality of a restaurant,we

participate in observing the way the chefs cook

A research: The differences about lifestyle between peole living in rural areas and ones in urban areas

We should live those areas to observe

Trang 26

It is a method that involves colleting data from a large number of people (more than forty),a

questionnaire might be worthwhile They are of two types:

+ Self-completed where we hand out and mail the questionnaire

+ Researcher –completed where we ask the

questions and complete the form ourselves

Trang 27

It is used for descriptive ,explanatory, and

evaluative forms of research

For example

We can hand out a list of questions to survey the way students use to improve listening skill everyday

Trang 29

It is a method that involves testing a hypothesis
