The green roof Extensive green roofs are suitable as habitats for animal and plant species that are able to adapt to and develop survival strategies for extreme local conditions and also mobile enough to reach habitats on roofs. Unlike habitats on the ground , green roofs do not have deep soil layers: in extremely dry periods plants cannot draw up groundwater and ground dwelling animals have no opportunity to retreat to lower lying, damper areas.
