• A command is an imperative statement One person orders another to do or not to do something It can be preceded by please The understood subject is you.

• There are two kinds of Imperative:

1 Affirmative Imperative: Is used when one person orders another to do something It usually begins with Bare- Infinitive.

Ex: Open the door.

Please turn off the light

2 Negative Imperative:

Is used when one person orders another not to do

something It usually begins with DON’T + VERB Bare Infinitive.

Ex: Don’t close the door.

Please don’t turn off the light.

Don’t talk in class, please.

Some reporting Verbs are often used to change an

Imperative: TELL, ASK, ORDER, ADVISE, COMMAND, BEG, WARN…

1.Affirmative Imperative:

Ex: a The teacher said to us, “Stand up”.

The teacher told us to stand up.

b “Buy some fresh radishes, Mai”, Mrs Thanh said.

How to change an Imperative

into Indirect:

Verb (bare)  Verb (To infinitive)

Ex: a He said to them, “Don’t shut the door”.

 He ordered them not to shut the door.

b She said to me, “Please don’t tell anybody what

happened”.

 She asked me not to tell anybody what (had) happened

2 Negative Imperative:

Don’t Verb (bare)  Not to Verb (bare)

In Indirect Speech, the word “please” is

omitted

Necessary changes are made in Indirect

Speech such as Personal Pronouns,

Possessives, Adverbs of time, Tenses of Verbs etc according to the relationship between the speakers and the time of reporting.

EXERCISES CHANGE INTO REPORTED SPEECH:

1 “Don’t come back after one o’clock”, advised my brother.

2 “Cook it in butter”, Mrs Brown said to her daughter.

3 The pupils said, “Teacher, give us better marks, please”.

4 “Pull as hard as you can”, he said to me.

5 “Be modest if you are a good pupil”, said my father.

6 “Shut the door but don’t lock it”, she said to us.

7 “Please help us”, they said to us.

8 “Don’t forget to send your parents my regards”, she said to me.

9 “Don’t take more than two of these at once”, said the doctor, handing me a bottle of pills.

10.“Do as you are told You are a naughty boy”, Mrs Willy said

11 The mother said to her son, “Don’t cry”.

12 ‘Close your books, please”, the teacher said to us.

13 He ordered them, “Don’t put your legs on my desk”.

14 Ann said to him, “Don’t wait for me if I am late”.

15 “Come and see us if you have time,” they said to us.

16 The customs officer said to us, “Have your passports ready, please”.

17 The librarian said, “Be quiet, children”.

18 “Don’t take my umbrella before you ask me”, Mrs Lan said to her daughter.

19 Tom said to us, “Please help me”.

20 “Don’t believe everything you hear,” he warned.
