With Goodyear as your crew chief,

your trip will be smooth

and a lot more fun!

Check your car seat Parents who are fairly new to infant car seats need to make sure seats are properly installed If you are unsure, seek an NHTSA certified car seat installer to teach you how to do it properly Search locally for an NHTSA-certified car seat technician as hospitals, emergency squads and police/fire departments often train staff members and can be a valuable resource

Check your tire tread The four tires on your car are the only parts of the vehicle

that have direct contact with the road, so the amount of tread is very important for

proper handling, braking and more You can check to see if you need new tires by using the penny test Insert a penny into the tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time

to replace your tires

Check wipers Ninety percent of driving decisions are based on vision Don’t wait until you are driving home from the hospital in the rain to figure out that you can’t

see well and need new wiper blades Check them now

to help ensure clear vision on the roads Replace them

if they are cracked, torn, cut or streaking

Tune in, tune up Before taking a long road trip, visit a professional to properly tune your car

Bonus: Regular vehicle maintenance can improve

gas mileage by an average of 4 percent!

Replacing a clogged air filter can improve a vehicle’s gas mileage by as much as 10 percent

Plus, it will also help protect your engine by keeping harmful impurities out

Roll into a fuel efficient tire Simply changing to a more fuel-efficient tire can help save you money at the pump The latest offering from Goodyear—Assurance’ Fuel Max’ —helps drivers save gas and spend less money getting to their destinations

A key element is its fuel-saving tread compound that helps reduce energy loss

and helps save fuel

One of the benefits of pregnancy (aside from your new

bundle of joy) is a thick, lustrous head of hair However,

after giving birth, hormonal changes send more hair

an increase in the amount of hair coming out in the shower

or on your brush While there is little you can do to prevent

the post-partum shed, here are some tools that will help

your hair be beautiful and healthy-looking post-baby

New guidelines advise that tots

PS SSS SSE Hee eee

of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents to keep toddlers’

car seats rear-facing until age 2 or until they reach the

car seat's rear-facing height or weight limit Previously,

the AAP cited 1 year and 20 pounds as the minimum

for flipping the seat, at which time many parents would

switch from an infant seat to a convertible car seat

A 2007 study in the journal /njury Prevention found

that children under age 2 are /5 percent less likely to

die or to be severely injured in a crash if they are fac-

ing the rear “A rear-facing child safety seat does a better

pediatric emergency physician, co-scientific director of the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and lead author of the AAP’s policy

can babies,

be overweight?

Recent studies found that one-third of 9-month-olds are

packing too many pounds, and babies who gain weight

rapidly in their first six months may be more likely to be

obese at age 3 "Your pediatrician may become concerned

if your baby’s weight is over the 95th percentile on growth

charts,” says Sandra Hassink M.D., director of Nemours’

Obesity Initiative "No baby will be labeled as ‘obese,’ but

your doctor may want to examine your child's habits.” That's

where you come in Dr Hassink offers this advice to giving

baby the healthiest start:

give him mama's milk Breastfeeding exclusively for at

least six months has been shown to help prevent child-

hood obesity

learn baby’s cues If your tot blocks his mouth with his

hands, moves his head away from your nipple or simply

refuses to open his mouth, he may be full If baby’s not

interested in eating right on schedule, try again a bit later

Also, every cry doesn’t mean, “I'm hungry.” Try holding him

or changing his diaper before feeding him

be a good role model Usually when children wean, they

begin eating what their parents eat Ask yourself: Am | eat-

ing healthy foods? Are my toddler's portions too big? Young

toddlers only need about 1,000 calories a day (consider that

1 cup of juice is 120 calories) — KIM Hays

When your baby is feverish, all you want to do is bring that number

on the thermometer down But a new report in Pediatrics, the jour-

nal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, turns conventional wisdom

on its head, stating parents should instead focus on making their child comfortable, not normalizing his temperature Fever isn’t an illness, it’s how the body responds to illness, and it can help fight infection, says

Ari Brown M.D., co-author of Baby 411 When your baby has a fever:

Pay attention to how he feels instead of his temperature reading

Use fever reducers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen as advised by your pediatrician

> have or baby vaccinated \Wait until baby has received at least one or two of the shots in her didn s-pertussis (Í DTaP) series, says Dr Shu This protects against tetanus, which can occur

if a needle isnt properly sterilized

> talk to ener pediatrician Find out if there's an experienced per son in your doctor's office who can pierce your child's ears using a dispo sabl e sterilized needle to reduce the risk of infection Ask your doctor about pain-relief options, such as a topical cream or infant acetaminophen Nursing afterward can also help calm baby

> choose earrings carefully Opt for a stud style earring in 14-karat gold, platinum, titanium or hypoallergenic stainless steel with a safety clasp that cant be pulled ot ut (Avoid nickel, which can cause an aliergic reaction.)

> avoid infection Keep the earrings in for six weeks, rotating them gently daily to keep the skin from adhering to the jewelry, and clean the surrounding area with soap and water or rubbing alcohol Always

our baby’s ability to understand words has been increasing, so at about 14 months you

can start a new, entertaining game with your little one: Show me your nose (and

ears and eyes and so on) "These games lay the groundwork for language and other social skills,” says

Rechele Brooks Ph.D., research assistant professor at the

Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences at the University of

Washington “It's a wonderful social learning experience.’

The turn-taking involved is like the back-and-forth of a

conversation, giving your baby practice at something she'll

be doing all her life Playing this way is also important, adds

turing is an important part of the infant's social world and

sets the stage for later language development.”

It's mind-boggling how much your toddler understands

Plus the sight of those chubby fingers pointing earnestly at her nose is enough reward to play again and again Expand her repertoire of words by playing name-and-point while eat-

ing dinner (practice with phrases like “Show me the peas.”)

or at the grocery store (ask “Where are the apples?’)

Reading helps him connect Words and

©bjects

9 to 12 months

Somewhere around 12 months your baby might delight

you by saying “mama.” He's probably thrown those sylla-

bles together before, but now he knows what it means

Saying these early words is the result of a gradual process

“Babies understand — well before they actually speak —

that things have names,” explains Roberta Golinkoff Ph.D.,

director of the University of Delaware Infant Language

Project and co-author of How Babies Talk

As your little one practices random syllables (and often

hears you say “mama loves you’) he finally utters the word

When you reward him with your joyous response, he puts

those syllables together again and again Other early words

are likely to be nouns as well, and while you can't really rush

things, you can support early vocabulary using these tips

Since babbling increases when he’s ex- cited, step in to name the thing that's making him happy

(Bananas! You like the bananas?”)

Reading offers lots of opportunities to label things again, and babies love repetition and predictability

Captivate him with songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” that have engaging tunes that also teach

words and concepts

At 6 months of age, your baby can stay awake for up to

three hours with fewer but longer snoozes This more

predictable schedule, combined with your baby’s ever-

expanding cognitive abilities, rmeans you have a new

playmate who thinks everything you do is funny

“Repeat, repeat, repeat; that’s how babies learn,” explains Jackie Silberg, author of Baby Smarts: Games for Playing and Learning But if your baby starts fussing

or looking away, it’s time for the game to end When

you follow his cues, you're teaching the most important

lesson of all — that he can count on you to take care of him Try these games, which should reward you with delicious baby giggles

one when still on the wand and then touch it The pop may surprise him, but after a few tries, he'll understand iis lesson in cause and effect

hands, she'll gaze at them in fascination, watching her fingers flutter and

10 tips to make your many

pediatrician visits go smoothly

By William Sears M.D., a Babytalk contributing editor

and the author of more than 40 child-care books

heckups are the cornerstone of good health,

and in your baby’s first couple of years

she'll have plenty of them, as the American

Academy of Pediatrics recommends at least nine from birth to 18 months Checkups are the best way to ensure a child is growing and develop-

ing as she should But they're more than that: Routine

visits to the pediatrician give parents the opportu-

nity to learn how to keep their kids healthy and safe

and to have all their medical questions answered I've

been on both sides of this process, as a pediatrician

past 40 years and as a father of eight Based on my experience, I've come up with these tips to ensure a successful visit to the pediatrician

time it right Don’t make an appointment that will coin-

cide with your child's naps or meals, and avoid periods when he tends to get fussy Feed him beforehand or pack

snacks Find out when the Office is least likely to be busy, and, if possible, schedule checkups during these off-peak

times so you don't have to wait long

Questions you

may want to ask

your baby’s doc:

v Is my child growing as

expected?

Vv Are his immunizations

up to date?

v/ What changes should

| see during his next

stage of development?

a you need extra time, say so A

problem like poor eating habits or

developmental delays may require a lit-

tle more attention, so be sure to alert

the office staff when you're making an

appointment that you have an impor-

tant issue to discuss

dress baby for success Avoid mul-

tilayered outfits or clothes with lots

of snaps and buttons Many toddlers

don't like having their shoes taken off,

so opt for slip-ons and remove them

yourself before the exam

be your child's advocate If you

know your toddler is spooked by

the scale, ask the nurse to hold off

weighing her until the end of the phys-

ical If she hates to have her clothes

removed, see if the doctor can per-

form most of the exam while she’s still

dressed and in your arms or lap

bring photos or vid-

eos Snap a photo with your smartphone to show the doctor just how bad the rash was two days ago Or use a Flip video camera to record your baby’s colicky cries I've found these tools highly

useful in diagnosing and treating

patients in my own practice

write it down Bring a list of ques-

tions so you don’t forget anything

Easy-to-remove

clothing makes exams easier

important you want to discuss You

may also find it useful to bring a pad

and pen to help you remember the

doctor's answers and instructions after

you leave

J: freely There's no such thing

as a silly question If you want to know whether something is normal or

whether your child should have a new

test or vaccine you've read about, just ask Part of the purpose of these well- baby checkups is to get information and reassurance from your doctor

prepare to report Be ready to answer questions on general top- ics, such as how your child is sleeping,

what and how much he’s eating and

be honest If your child isn’t sleep-

ing enough or is eating too much junk food, fess up; your doctor can make accurate judgments only if you

tell him the truth

mirror what | call exam anxiety

Instead of being anxious yourself, quickly engage the doctor with “happy

to be here” greetings and facial ges-

tures When baby senses the doctor

is a mom-approved person, she'll be
