challenge students to lind six·lener words that fit in the puzzles in a special way The last three

GeUlng Started

First:

• mako':In overhead transparency 01 an activity

• go over the inslructions with Ihe class

• have tho class look over the questions and offer possible solutions

• il the answer is correct, print it in tho given space

• II difficulties are l.mcountered, isolate key words in the clues

• go to a dictionary, CD-ROM, or other relerence materials

• use a thesaurus

• Involve tho parents or older siblings as a resource only

Second:

• go over Ihe instructions with the class

• permit the students to pursue this activity independenlly or with a partner

• by brainstorming and by working as a team, students develop and/or share strategies

with their partners

Third:

• allow the class to experience the activity after it has been explained

• ,,, alter a ten-minute time period, SlOp the class and discuss what has boen achieved so

• if necessary, provide additional clues or strategies to help them In their task

• a specilc clue may be addressed, and through a cooperative effort, the class may come up with the answer

• class resumes the activity

Last:

• since each class is made up of students 01 varying abilities, the same activity can be distributed to the entire gloup: however, it is important to adjust your expectations ac-cordingly

• some students may be expected to complete at least 80% of tho activity, whereas some may only do about hall

Time line s

• many of these activities can be assigned with longer times

• the Pair 01 DiamondS puzzles, for example, could have a time line of one week

• try to encourage daily lime management

• students can be given some class time to work on the activity

• suggest lhat the students spend 10-15 (Quality) minutes on their lask at home
