a ten-year successful track record!

3GPP has contributed to the ITU process toward IMT since its foundation in 1998 and this cooperation

proved to be extremely successful

With specific reference to IMT-Advanced, 3GPP has actively supported the ITU activity since the early

stages of the work in both WP 8F and WP 5D, and also at the previous workshop in Kyoto in 2007

where LTE was presented as a foundation for the LTE-Advanced

Toward IMT-Advanced:

As highlighted in the next slide, the ITU-R and 3GPP timelines are well aligned

In particular, 3GPP foresees:

An “Early Proposal” submission agreed at RAN #41

(9-12 Sep 2008), for submission to WP 5D #3 (8-15 Oct 2008)

A “Complete Technology” submission to be agreed at RAN #44 (26-29 May 2009), for submission to WP 5D #5 (planned for 10-17 June 2009)

A “Final” submission to incorporate updates, additional specific details or feature additions, and the required self-evaluation, to be agreed at RAN #45 (22-25 Sep 2009), for submission to WP 5D #6 (planned for 13-20 Oct 2009)

The 3GPP “Early Proposal”

The “Early Proposal” submission available at

WP 5D #3:

reinforces the relationship of the 3GPP work to IMT-Advanced

confirms the 3GPP roadmap & workplan on LTE-Advanced work

provides the initial 3GPP technology concept(s) under discussion/development for LTE-Advanced and as such it provides a starting point for the

education/information to evaluation groups

LTE-Advanced

Requirements and targets

Requirements and targets for LTE-Advanced

Partnership Project; Technical Specification Group Radio Access Network; Requirements for Further Advancements for E-UTRA (LTE-Advanced) ”, and are based on the following concepts:

LTE-Advanced is an evolution of LTE All relevant requirements of LTE are valid also for LTE-Advanced

LTE-Advanced shall meet or exceed IMT-Advanced requirements within the ITU-R time plan

Backward compatibility with E-UTRA/E-UTRAN

LTE Advanced

Main technical features under discussion

Support of wider bandwidth:

Carrier aggregation, where two or more component carriers, each with a bandwidth up to 20 MHz, are aggregated, is considered for LTE-Advanced in order

to support downlink transmission bandwidths larger than 20 MHz, e.g 100 MHz

Spatial multiplexing

Extension of LTE downlink spatial multiplexing to up

to eight layers is considered For the uplink spatial multiplying to up to four layers is considered

LTE Advanced

Main technical features under discussion

Coordinated multiple point transmission and

reception:

This feature is considered as a tool to improve the coverage of high data rates, the cell-edge throughput and/or to increase system throughput

In downlink this feature implies dynamic coordination among multiple geographically separated transmission points Possible schemes include coordinated scheduling and/or beamforming, and joint processing/transmission

In uplink this feature implies reception of the transmitted signal

at multiple, geographically separated points Scheduling decisions can be coordinated among cells to control

interference.

LTE Advanced

Main technical features under discussion

Relaying functionality:

Relaying is considered for LTE-Advanced as a tool

to improve e.g the coverage of high data rates, group mobility, temporary network deployment, the cell-edge throughput and/or to provide coverage in new areas

Further enhanced MBMS

Process toward next steps…

3GPP in its normal working methods considers the views and contributions from its many members as the basis for the discussion towards the development

of final specifications for the technology

Hence at this stage of the work in 3GPP, many views are coming forward

For example: At recent 3GPP RAN Working Group Meetings on Physical Layer, more than 130 contributions, many at the detailed level, have contributed to substantial progress on LTE-Advanced

This is a key strength of the 3GPP process: the resulting conclusions are able to take best advantage

of the crucial ideas for the development of a premier IMT-Advanced technology solution
