Dear Human Resources Department,Thank you for contacting me I do, in fact, havemany questions about the job Most of them, I

am sure, will be answered in good time, butthere are a couple of pressing questions that Iwould like to ask First, how soon will I beeligible for the insurance coverage through thecompany’s insurance provider? My wife ispregnant and I am wondering how thetransition in health insurance will work withour July due date Second, will I receive weekly, biweekly, or monthly paychecks? Knowing thiswill help me organize my budget Thanks againfor your concern I look forward to workingwith you, too

Sincerely,Andres Alamillo

23 Sample response:

Great news, Marcia!

I am so happy for you The job sounds perfect, and I think you’ll do great I have been on quite

a few job interviews before (maybe too many!),and I do have many suggestions Here are themost important things that come to mind

First off, I think it is always a good idea to wear

a suit, even if the work environment seemscasual Suits make you look and feel moreprofessional Besides, it is better to beoverdressed than underdressed

You should also speak confidently andpositively Your answers should always focus onthe things that you are competent and successfulwith Try to steer the conversation back to yourskills and successes whenever possible Andfollow up with telling your interviewer how youthink those skills will translate to the new job

Last but not least, sit up straight and lookyour interviewer in the eye Body language isvery important You will do great! Call me ifyou want talk more about it or even set up apractice interview

Congratulations,Liping

24 Sample response:

As with most things in life, there are stages andtimes when bringing work home from theoffice is a good idea, and stages and times inlife when this is very dangerous Young peopleshould do everything that they can at thebeginning of their careers to develop the skillsthat they need to make the years of work thatthey have ahead easy For them, bringing workhome is a good idea However, once they havestarted a family, their work should stay at theoffice so that they can create a proper balancebetween work and family life

Many young people don’t want to bringwork home with them They would rathermeet with coworkers at the bar after work or

go out on the town This is foolish Thebeginning of a career is the perfect time tofocus on developing the skills and tools thatwill make the years ahead smooth and easy Ifsomeone puts in long hours and works hard atthe beginning of his career, then by the time he

is starting a family, work will be second nature

It is much more difficult to build a career orput in the extra time to prove oneself once life

is complicated with such things as spouses andchildren I have known several young peoplewho really got ahead in their careers byshowing great dedication early on

Once a person starts a family, it becomesmore difficult to work at home Trying to work

at home with the obligations and interruptions

of a family can create stress for the worker and

the family Balancing home life and work lifecan be hard as it is, and bringing home workcan make it almost impossible to either work

or attend to domestic life I have known manyworkers who found working at home verystressful in this situation Especially during thechildrearing years, it is good to designatespaces and times for things When at work, work; when at home, be domestic This relievesstress and helps establish the balance that isnecessary for both good work and a goodhome life

The final stage of life, after the childrenare out of the house, is still a mystery to mepersonally I hope that at this point in life, aworker is in the position to decide what hewants to be the focus of his life, and do thatwhen he clocks out If he is very dedicated towork, and wants to work from home, heshould If he wants to take his wife to dinner, play racquetball, or tend his garden, he shouldhave the time and space for that

Looking at three stages of a worker’s lifeand career, it is clear that taking work homefrom the office can be a good or a bad idea for

a worker, depending on his circumstances, priorities, and age Taking work home is only agood idea if does not create stress or disruptlife It is a bad idea if it does

25 Sample response:

Nothing in the world can completely ridsomeone’s life of stress, but healthy lifestylechoices can help people manage and controltheir stress levels Many people get trapped in acycle of overeating and lounging in front of thetelevision to escape their stress, but what they

do not realize is that unhealthy lifestyles cancreate more stress than they had to begin with

Eating well, spending time outdoors, andexercising create a healthy body and a healthy

mind A healthy lifestyle is the only real way tomoderate stress

When I was younger, I had a friend whowas a single mother She took care of threechildren, worked a full-time job, kept a cleanhome, put a home-cooked dinner on the tableevery night, and started each morning withyoga She amazed me At the time, I couldhardly manage my job and my husband, muchless the clean house, home-cooked dinner, andexercise I asked her how she managed tobalance it all She explained to me that theclean house, dinner, and yoga were not extrawork for her, but rather the foundation thatmade everything else possible

I have seen the opposite extreme as well

My brother creates stress for himself, while hethinks that he is escaping it He doesn’t havetime for a healthy meal because he is too busy

at work, so he grabs a fast food hamburger forlunch instead of preparing something healthy

He goes home from work and needs to “blowoff some steam” or “de-stress” in front of the

TV This has created a cycle of unhealthy living. Now he is getting overweight, which createseven more stress for him His body is not well-nourished, so he can’t think or work as well as

he could if he took a little time to care for hisbody His stress builds on itself

I have also seen a few people in my lifeswitch from high-stress unhealthy living tolow-stress healthy living The transition isamazing My friend Gina started exercising andeating well in her 40s, after she had a healthscare She was upset at first about her strictdoctor’s orders But after a few months ofhealthy living, she started to notice changes inall aspects of her life She was happier, hadmore energy, and was less stressed These threeexamples together have shown me that the bestway to fight stress is with sanity Healthy living

is the best defense against stress
