Trang 4I INTRODUCTION
1.1 Reasons for choosing a topic
In the current context, When the Ministry of Education passed Circular 29
on extra classes and tutoring, students become confused about how to study, even lazy and lacking motivation Fortunately, with the application of information technology and the guidance of teachers, students’ learning becomes interesting and oriented Technology not only helps teachers communicate knowledge in a more vivid and engaging way, but also creates new learning methods, encouraging initiative and creativity on the part of students The integration of technology into the teaching process has become an inevitable trend in the modern education system
At Thai Hoa High School, before the initiative to use Kahoot was applied, the process of teaching and learning English in grade 11 still faced many challenges Traditional revision methods such as writing tests and homework often leave students feeling bored, lacking interaction and interest in learning As a result, many students are unable to retain knowledge in a long-term and effective way, leading to difficulties in applying the knowledge learned to tests or real-life situations The lack
of flexibility in teaching methods has prevented students from fully and quickly acquiring and consolidating knowledge, leading to an urgent need for a more effective learning aid
Realizing these limitations, I decided to experiment and apply Kahoot - an online learning tool, with the goal of creating a more exciting and interesting learning environment that helps students effectively consolidate and enhance the knowledge they have learned The use of Kahoot not only improves the revision process but also encourages students to participate more actively in the lesson, thereby improving the quality of teaching and learning
1.3 Scope of study
The scope of research of this initiative includes the application of Kahoot to the teaching and learning of English to grade 11 students at Thai Hoa high school in the 2024-2025 school year The initiative focuses on review activities and knowledge tests after units of study in the "Global Success" program, with the desire to create innovation in teaching methods and contribute to improving students' learning outcomes
Trang 51.4 Subjects of study
The research object of the initiative is grade 11 students at Thai Hoa high school
in the school year 2024 - 2025 They are students of the "Global Success" English program and participate in revision activities and knowledge tests through the Kahoot application
1.5 Research methods
The research methodology used in this initiative includes the application of teaching activities through Kahoot and the comparison of students' learning outcomes between the experimental class (using Kahoot) and the control class (using traditional teaching methods) The learning outcomes of the two groups were tracked and analyzed before and after the application of the initiative to evaluate the effectiveness of using Kahoot in consolidating and enhancing knowledge
1.6 The new factors in the initiative
The initiative to use Kahoot in the teaching and learning of Grade 11 English
at Thai Hoa high school, especially during the time when extra classes and tutoring are banned at school, is something new and exciting for reviewing lessons at home
In the past, knowledge review was often done through traditional methods such as written tests, homework, or class discussions, which did not create attraction and motivation for students The application of Kahoot has brought a completely new method of revision, with a combination of academic knowledge and game elements, helping students learn while playing, enhancing interaction and active participation
in the learning process
The new point of the initiative also lies in the ability to create a flexible and interactive learning environment immediately Kahoot allows teachers to easily design review questions in each unit with a variety of formats, from multiple-choice questions to picture or sequential questions, helping students review knowledge in a diverse and rich way Not only answering questions, students can also see their results immediately, thereby being able to assess their own level of understanding and adjust their learning strategies accordingly
Moreover, the use of Kahoot in the classroom also brings novelty when turning the learning process into a small competition, creating a healthy atmosphere of emulation among students This not only stimulates active competition, but also makes learning more engaging, encouraging students to actively explore, research, and participate in learning activities It is the combination of technology and game elements that makes Kahoot a creative and new review tool, contributing to improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning at Thai Hoa high school
Trang 6II RESEARCH CONTENT
2.1 Theoretical basis
In the context of modern education, the application of information technology
in teaching is becoming necessary to improve the quality of education and meet the learning needs of students Technology not only supports teachers in conveying knowledge in a vivid and engaging way, but also creates many new learning methods, encouraging initiative and creativity on the part of students The integration of technology into the teaching process is becoming an inevitable trend, contributing to improving the interaction between teachers and students, and improving learning efficiency
According to the current circular and decree of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, schools are encouraged to use active teaching methods and tools, in which the application of digital technology in the teaching process plays an important role in educational innovation Specifically, Circular No 55/2012/TT-BGDDT has mentioned the promotion of the use of information technology in teaching, in order to help teachers and students access richer and more diverse sources of knowledge, improve the quality of learning and develop technological skills
The initiative to apply Kahoot to grade 11 English teaching is within the framework of modernizing teaching methods Kahoot is a game-based online learning platform that assists teachers in designing tests and multiple-choice questions in a variety of formats, including picture questions and sequencing The platform helps to create a flexible learning environment, stimulates instant interaction, and creates healthy emulation among students, making the learning process more engaging
The Kahoot application is also in line with the orientation of educational innovation when combining learning and game elements, helping students develop creative thinking skills, critical thinking and proactive spirit in learning This is in line with the trend of modern education, where students not only need to master knowledge but also develop soft skills, promoting confidence and interest in learning
2.2 The reality of the problem
a On the teacher's side
Before applying the initiative, teaching English according to the grade 11 program at Thai Hoa high school faced many difficulties Traditional revision methods, which are primarily based on written tests and homework, often leave students feeling bored and uninterested Furthermore, teachers are challenged to find innovative teaching methods that engage students and support effective knowledge reinforcement The lack of flexibility in teaching methods also makes it difficult for teachers to detect students' knowledge gaps in time to adjust teaching methods accordingly
Trang 7b On the student side
Students often lack motivation and positive interaction in traditional English lessons They have difficulty remembering and applying knowledge to real-life tests
or situations The limitations in the revision method have made it impossible for students to consolidate and master knowledge adequately This leads to the acquisition of new knowledge and the development of language skills that are still limited Therefore, the need to find a new, more engaging learning method is extremely necessary to improve the quality of learning

2.3.2 Solutions
2.3.2.1 Solution 1 Review the knowledge after each unit with the Kahoot puzzle:
Objectives: Because there are no more extra classes in the afternoon, new
knowledge that students learn in the morning will be easily forgotten if not reviewed Therefore, teachers design exercises through the Kahoot application, helping students practice every day The exercises on Kahoot are diverse, vivid, and have answers for students, creating excitement for learning As long as teachers are persistent every day, students will definitely not forget the knowledge
• Create quizzes that correspond to the content of the unit: After the end of each unit, teachers can design quizzes on Kahoot with questions that cover the grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension skills learned in that unit Questions should
be varied, including multiple-choice, word-filled, and picture questions to comprehensively test students' knowledge
• Organize periodic review sessions: After completing certain units, teachers can organize review sessions using Kahoot for students to reinforce all their knowledge These sessions can be held in the form of competitions between groups
to create a lively atmosphere and increase interest in learning
How to review the knowledge after each unit with the Kahoot puzzle

Trang 132.3.2.2 Solution 2 Using Kahoot to assess students' comprehension: Objectives: Using Kahoot to assess students' comprehension is an engaging
and effective way to check understanding, reinforce learning, and promote active participation By using Kahoot in these ways, we can make comprehension assessment more interactive, fun, and insightful, allowing both teacher and students
to identify areas for improvement effectively
• Quick quizzes in lessons: During the teaching process, teachers can integrate short Kahoot quizzes to quickly check students' mastery of knowledge This helps teachers promptly detect knowledge gaps and adjust teaching methods accordingly
• End-of-Unit Assessment: Use Kahoot to conduct an end-of-unit test to assess students' comprehension and ability to apply knowledge Grades from Kahoot can also be used to help students self-assess their progress
• How to use Kahoot to assess students' comprehension
a Design Questions to Assess Comprehension
• Focus on Key Concepts: Questions should target the most important concepts, ideas, and skills students need to understand
• Vary Question Difficulty: Mix in easy and more challenging questions to gauge varying levels of understanding This will help identify if some students are struggling with basic concepts or if they grasp the material well
• Use Follow-up Questions: If possible, use questions that require students to explain or apply what they've learned, such as "Why ?" or "How ?"…
b Add a Variety of Question Types
• Multiple Choice: Classic question format for simple recall or understanding
of facts
• True/False: Great for testing basic comprehension and concepts
• Polls: Use polls for informal assessment to gauge student feelings about a topic or to test for common misconceptions
• Puzzle: Create questions where students need to place answers in a correct sequence (helpful for cause and effect or chronological events)
c Customize the Game Settings
• Game Length: Choose a quiz length that fits the class period we can adjust the number of questions to be either quick or more detailed
• Time Limits: Set appropriate time limits for each question to encourage students to think quickly but not feel rushed For comprehension, 20-30 seconds per question is usually ideal
• Feedback: After each question, show the correct answer and briefly explain why it's correct or why the other choices are wrong This helps reinforce learning
Trang 14d Launch the KahootSession
• Live Mode: we can run a live session where students participate in real-time, answering questions on their devices As the teacher, we'll monitor how students are performing, seeing which questions they are struggling with and who might need extra help
• Challenge Mode: For homework or remote learning, use Kahoot Challenge Mode to allow students to complete the quiz asynchronously This also lets you assess their individual understanding
e Review and Discuss
• Class Discussion: After the Kahoot, go over the questions and correct answers as a group Discuss why certain answers were correct or wrong to further clarify concepts

2.3.2.3 Solution 3 Creating Layered Kahoot Competitions:
Objectives: Creating layered Kahoot competitions is a great way to engage
players at different levels of understanding or skill, making the game more fun and challenging Here’s how you can structure and create layered Kahoot competitions: Creating layered Kahoot competitions involves structuring your quiz or game
in multiple stages or layers, where each layer builds on the previous one This approach can be used to make the competition more engaging and challenging by introducing progressively harder questions or incorporating different elements like time limits, point multipliers, or even themes for each layer
How you can create a layered Kahoot competition:
a Plan the Layers
• Conceptualize Layers: Decide on how many layers or stages you want to
have For example:
o Layer 1: Easy questions (1 point)
o Layer 2: Medium difficulty (2 points)
o Layer 3: Hard questions (3 points)
o Layer 4: Final stage with bonus points or specific challenges (5 points)
• Set the Goals: Each layer could represent different categories or levels, and
players may need to score a certain number of points or reach a threshold to move on to the next layer
• Add Creative Elements: You could add mini-games, bonus rounds, or
questions with different point values to create excitement and suspense
b Create Multiple Kahoot Quizzes for Each Layer
Trang 16• Separate Quizzes: You can create different Kahoot quizzes for each layer
Each quiz will contain questions with increasing difficulty
o For example, you could create one quiz with easy questions for the first stage, a second quiz with medium-difficulty questions for the second stage, and so
on
• Include Special Rules for Each Layer: Consider adding different types of
questions (e.g., true/false, multiple choice, or puzzle questions) as the layers progress
• Time Limits: You can adjust the time limit for each question to make the
higher levels more challenging
c Add Layered Points System
• Points for Correct Answers: The more difficult the question, the higher the
points should be
• Bonus Points: At the final layer, you can include a bonus round or a double
points round to make things even more exciting
d Introduce Mini-Challenges or Themes for Each Layer
• Thematic Layers: You could theme each layer around different topics For
example, layer one could be about geography, layer two about history, and layer three about pop culture
• Mini-Challenges: In between layers, you could add mini-games or
challenges that could be trivia, puzzles, or timed races to keep participants engaged
e Ensure a Smooth Transition Between Layers
• Progression System: Players should be able to see their progress in the game
and how many layers they have completed
• Leaderboard or Tiers: After each layer, display a leaderboard that shows
the players' rankings This will keep the competition competitive and motivate participants to strive for the top spot
f Customize the Quiz Settings
• Use Kahoot’s built-in features to adjust settings like:
o Music and Themes: Choose a fun, engaging theme for the competition
to enhance the experience
o Timer: Adjust how much time players have to answer each question
For harder questions, you could allow extra time
o Distractions: Add power-ups or decoys to distract players and add more
unpredictability
g Host the Competition
Trang 17• Launch Each Layer: Once you've set up your layers, start with the first quiz
and after it finishes, transition to the next layer
• Engage Players: Make sure to keep the competition interactive and fun
Provide feedback on progress after each layer, whether players advance to the next stage or not
h Post-Competition Debrief
• After the competition ends, you could give participants a breakdown of their performance, showing how many layers they completed, their final score, and where they excelled
Tools and Features to Use
• Kahoot Quizzes: Create multiple quizzes for each layer
• Team Play: You can group players into teams to add a cooperative element
• Reports: After each competition, use the Kahoot reports to analyze how
players performed in each layer
By following these steps, you can create a fun and challenging layered Kahoot competition that will keep your participants engaged from start to finish
Organize competitions between classes: Teachers can organize Kahoot competitions between grades in the same grade to create a healthy atmosphere of emulation These competitions not only help students review their knowledge but also develop teamwork skills and teamwork
• Encourage students to create their own Kahoot questions: To increase student participation and initiative, teachers can encourage students to create their own Kahoot quizzes based on what they have learned and share with their friends This helps students practice their creative skills and critical thinking

Trang 202.4 Feedback and improvement through Kahoot results:
• Analyze Kahoot results: After each Kahoot review or test, teachers should analyze the results to understand the weak parts of students' knowledge Based on this, teachers can redesign lectures or organize more intensive revision activities for those sections
• Provide timely feedback: Use Kahoot results to provide immediate feedback
to students, helping them identify strengths and weaknesses in the learning process, thereby making a review plan more effective
The above measures make the Kahoot application an effective teaching support tool, not only helping students consolidate their knowledge but also creating a positive and interesting learning environment
In the process of applying the initiative, I focus on creativity and initiative, the following are the contents that have been applied to the 11 Global Success English lesson:
Part 1: Study modes
Requirements: In this section, students will practice vocabulary and important
sentence structures through the use of flashcards The game requires a minimum of two participants, where one person takes on the role of controller (the person who asks the question) and the other answers Flashcards are designed with two sides: one side records the vocabulary or sentence structure, the other side records the meaning, pronunciation, or illustrative examples
Game rules: very simple The controller will take turns giving each flashcard for players to answer the meaning or use of words in the sentence If the answer is correct, the player scores points and is transferred to the next flashcard If the answer
is incorrect, the moderator will provide the correct answer, then return to this question in the next play to ensure students remember Thanks to continuous interaction and repetition-based learning, flashcards help students memorize vocabulary effectively, while providing flexibility when students can practice
Trang 21anytime, anywhere This game not only trains knowledge but also creates a fun learning atmosphere, encouraging collaboration and interaction between students
For example, in Unit 1: A Long and Healthy Life, the vocabulary list includes words such as:
To organize the revision, students can practice on their own with flashcards on their personal devices or print them out for use Teachers can also organize group learning activities through Kahoot games, multiple-choice questions, or fill-in-the-picture words designed based on flashcard content When performed on Kahoot, quizzes will be created for students to answer individually (Classic Mode) or in groups (Team Mode), encouraging collaboration and discussion among students The results from the Kahoot game are monitored by the teacher to assess the student's level of memorization and understanding After the game is over, the teacher can explain more with difficult questions to reinforce knowledge This method not only helps students memorize vocabulary effectively, but also creates a lively, interactive learning environment, thereby increasing confidence and interest
in learning English

structure, students will participate in quizzes to test their level of understanding The quiz questions are designed to be diverse and follow the content of the lesson, helping students consolidate their knowledge systematically
After students have completed practicing vocabulary and sentence structure
through flashcards, they will participate in a series of quiz questions to test their
level of understanding and ability to apply knowledge in practice The game requires
at least two players One person is the controller (managing questions and scoring), and the other is the answerer
Specific Game Rules:
• Each question will be read aloud by the driver, providing a section of suggestions (definitions, example sentences)
• Players can guess the meaning of words, how to pronounce them, or complete sentences as required
• Each correct answer will be scored Players can request additional hints if needed, but points will be deducted
• At the end of the game, the person with the highest score wins
