Time Management
Now, let’s take a closer look at each of these skills and how you can plan tostudy for them
IELTS Study Plan for the Listening Section
One piece of good news for you – the Listening and Speaking sections are thesame for IELTS Academic and General test candidates
First, learn about the Listening Section of the exam: the directions, the types oflistening exercises, and the time limits
Do an assessment of how your current skills match up with the test requirements
Remember, each section of the exam is scored from 0 to 30
Second, know how to listen and write notes at the same time like you would in atypical classroom
Trang 33You will listen to lectures and conversations – only once
Thus, you will need to forever record the main ideas and opinions expressed to
be able to effectively answer test questions
No prior knowledge is needed about the academic topics that are discussed onthe exam
Above all, be familiar with the setup of the Listening Section
Know the directions for the section ahead of time to save time!
Pay particular attention to the word limit
You will be instructed, for example, to "use only two words" to complete thesentence
If the answer ‘leather pants’, the answer ‘pants made of leather’ would beincorrect
Trang 34vocabulary.
Trang 35General IELTS Reading
The General IELTS has 3 sections
Section 1 contains 6 to 8 passages drawn from notices, advertisements, companyhandbooks, official documents, books, magazines and newspapers
Prepare by reading texts from books, journals, magazines and high-level
Trang 36For example, read nytimes.com and economist.com Make reading these sites apriority to develop sophisticated reading skills
If you unaware of any terms during your reading, list the new words and lookthem up in a dictionary Study and remember them for the exam
Your main task is to locate answers
One challenge of the Reading section is to determine if the answer to a questionactually exists in the passage
Be sure to practice the True False Not Given / Yes No Not Given questionsextensively before taking the exam
Trang 37For example, one question from the past was: What do you think of plants?
Imagine – you are doing well talking about your family and career, and then youget a question about plants!
The second phase is often called the “Long Turn” which last 3 to four 4 minutes
Trang 38You have 1 minute to prepare your answer and 2 to 3 minutes to give yourresponse
Use your time wisely and fully answer all of the questions Don’t be nervous!
The third phase is sometimes a continuation of the topic in the “Long Turn.”
The IELTS proctors asks you to answer 4 to 5 questions
This interview could last from 4 to 5 minutes It is your last chance to impressthe IELTS official who determines your grade face to face!
Here are my last few tips
The test proctor will grade by four elements of English:
***Fluency and Coherence
***Lexical Resource
Trang 39***Pronunciation
Like in the writing section criteria, answering the question is the number onerequirement That’s logical, isn’t it?
Time management is crucial!
Can you say what it is needed within the time limits of the exam?
The entire IELTS Speaking section takes about 15 minutes to complete – theshortest part of the exam!
However, as you can see above, the three phases each pose different challengeswith different time limits Practice your responses within those time constraints!
Third, be aware of how to answer each IELTS Speaking Question
In my preparation classes with students, each student engages in-depth practicewith immediate feedback to improve instantly
Trang 40Finally, use the Extra Resources File for links to improve your speaking score
IELTS Study Plan for the Writing Section
The Academic and General IELTS exams present different writing opportunitiesfor candidates
The two skills where my own students admit their shortcoming are speaking andwriting Some candidates need private IELTS practice to ensure a high score onthe exam as a result
Difficulty in speaking often arises from the lack of confidence and organization
of ideas
Problems with writing stem from the poor practice received in too many ESLclasses around the world
Well, that stops today!
Whether you take the Academic IELTS for university admissions or the GeneralIELTS for work or immigration, these are the four (4) criteria for a high writingscore on the exam:
Trang 41If you plan to take the General exam, skip this section for the one below
Academic Writing Tasks
While I do suggest working with a college-educated native English speaker toreview your writing practice, there are some steps you can take on your own
Trang 42Second, understand the two writing tasks on the Academic IELTS test:
(a) Task 1: Describe trends over a period of time in a graph or chart or describe
a process (suggested time - 20 minutes)
(b) Task 2: Support an opinion in writing (275-350 words) (the dreaded IELTSessay! Suggested time 40 minutes)
An example of an Academic IELTS essay is:
E-books will totally replace traditional newspaper and magazines To what extent do you agree or disagree? Use good reasons and examples to support your answer.
Third, you will need strong skills in outlining, paraphrasing, organizing, andsynthesizing
These “hidden skills” – my words – are discussed further in Habit #10
Fourth, a strong vocabulary is rewarded by test graders – it is one of the 4
Trang 43You simply must be able to write on the college-level with solid vocabulary toexpress your opinions fluently
The best way to increase your writing score is to amp up your word powerduring your test preparation
General Writing Tasks
A college-educated native English speaker is a good choice to review yourwriting practice
Fortunately, the two writing tasks on the General IELTS test are less difficult:
(c) Task 1: Write a friendly, semi-business, or business letter in response to ascenario (suggested time - 20 minutes)
(d) Task 2: Support an opinion in writing (275-350 words) (the dreaded IELTSessay! Suggested time 40 minutes)
Unlike the Academic exam, the topic is more general in nature:
Trang 44development Others believe that it is important for children to attend to school Use good reasons and examples to support your answer.
Finally, practice, practice, and practice even some more!
You sharpen your writing skills by doing so
Make sure you download the Extra Resources File (see link at end of this book)for links to more IELTS tips
Now, let’s turn our attention to four areas where most students may not focus –but should! – their efforts during IELTS preparation
Building your vocabulary, affirming your grammar skills, mastering combinedskills, and using effective time management tactics could make the differencebetween a mediocre and high score
IELTS Study Plan for Stronger Vocabulary
“As vocabulary is reduced, so are the number of feelings you can express, the number of events you can describe, the number of the things you can identify!"
- Sheri S Tepper, author
Trang 45In fact, concentrated vocabulary study is one of the best moves you can makeduring your IELTS test preparation
While this is not encouragement to try to use “big words” on the exam, no doubtpowerful word power is indispensable to success
The average US high school student knows about 86,000 words
First, how strong is your English vocabulary?
The IELTS Writing Rubric calls for appropriate word choice and a range ofvocabulary
Think about it
Vocabulary cuts across all four sections of the IELTS exam
Start with your powerful 50 vocabulary terms
Trang 46When you read, the following formula applies: Vocabulary Knowledge + TopicKnowledge = Reading Comprehension
A strong lexicon helps you read faster
Vocabulary is also important to active listening (see Habit #9)
Second, given the limited amount of exam preparation time, you need to studyvocabulary lists to augment your word power drawn from reading
Direct focus on certain terms speeds up the acquisition time of new words tohelp you on the exam
Third, try to study about 20 words per week Define terms Write sentences withthe terms
Know the other parts of speech Search for synonyms and antonyms of your newvocabulary terms
For example, if your word is an adjective, then find the forms for the noun, verb, and adverb
Trang 47If you accidently write with fragments or if you have trouble with subject-verbagreement, you should refresh your grammar skills
In Habit #8, you get a few pointers to avoid common grammar errors
However, for a grammar review, I suggest checking out the text: 27 Keys toBetter English Grammar
Trang 48Your greatest enemy on the test – time!
Every part of the exam is timed
You will see the countdown clock in the upper right corner of the computerscreen
During your exam preparation, it is important to practice within the timed testinglimits
For example, you have 40 minutes to write the IELTS essay
While the time seems sufficient, wait till you try to deliver a polished essay
I use this online stopwatch countdown timer in my classes to time students tocomplete their speaking and writing exercises on time
Make sure you wear a watch on test day to keep your own time
Trang 49You’ve embarked on a marathon.
Trang 50Set assign a specific amount of time devoted to IELTS training every day
If possible, and I strongly recommend it, work with a native English teacher withIELTS preparation experience
An “IELTS Coach” can assist your training so you maximize your score on examday
Enjoy your job promotion, entry into your favorite university, or savor the
scholarship money you earned all because you made the sacrifice now in yourIELTS preparation
Good luck on the IELTS!
Trang 51Now, let’s dive deeper into other habits you need to form in order to achieve theIELTS success you seek – and deserve.
Trang 52Be familiar with the IELTS format.
Trang 54You must know the structure of the exam, the time allowances per section (andper question), and the expectations you must meet on the part of the test graders
so you get the best score possible
Therefore, “exam intelligence” is paramount for your exam success
Think of the following as a briefing on IELTS exam and shared insights so youare better prepared for test day
There are four sections of the exam (in order) that reflect the four main languageskills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing
The entire test takes nearly 4 hours to complete!
Now, let’s review each exam section
IELTS Listening
The first part of the exam is listening
