Trang 13KEEP A VOCABULARY NOTEBOOK
MANY STUDENTS AND TEST candidates alike find English vocabularydifficult with thousands of words and word combinations, such as
collocations, idioms and expressions
However, you already know that a rich vocabulary is a key component ofIELTS, TOEFL, or TOEIC success
Therefore, you need to systematically maintain a record of each new wordyou encounter whether while reading or studying powerful word lists
The best way to register your words is to write them in a vocabulary
notebook
Your 50 Powerful Vocabulary Terms for IELTS™, TOEFL®, and TOEIC®
Success is already a vocabulary notebook you can conveniently study
between classes, on break at work, or at home in an eBook format
However, you will want to continue to increase your English vocabulary aslong as you study the language
Know Your Words
Actually, write a couple of words before the unfamiliar term and maybe acouple of words afterwards so you grab the context
So, instead of an isolated word, you have a vocabulary phrase with context
Usually, learning a new word means that you:
**know what it means
**know how to say it
**know how to spell it
**know when and when not to use it
Trang 14**know the grammar of the word
(e.g which word must follow it)
An entry of a new word in your vocabulary notebook could appear as:
1 aplomb – noun – confidence
Ex: Mary delivered her first speech to the company with aplomb.
Thus, you number and write the word followed by its part of speech (noun, adjective, adverb, etc.) and its definition
Then, write an example sentence with highlight the word in the sentence foreasy recognition
If you need to hear the word’s pronunciation, visit merriam-webster.com for
US English and Cambridge Dictionary for British English
Also consider creating electronic flashcards on the quizlet.com website.Whatever your approach, continue to expand and study your vocabulary toexpand your powerful word power!

Trang 22LESSON 3: 10 POWERFUL PHRASAL
VERBS
PHRASAL VERBS ARE CONVERSATIONAL S, you won’t use them informal reports, memos, or your test essays
Separable Phrasal Verbs
Many phrasal verbs are transitive, meaning that they take an object (indirect
or object)
Ex: I threw the ball to John.
Ball is the direct object Direct objects are things
John is the indirect object Indirect objects are people
One type of phrasal verb is separable
Separable phrasal verbs are when the verb and the preposition can be
separated, putting the direct or indirect object in the middle
For Example – the phrasal verb “to pick up” which in our example means
“to get.”
Ex A: I need to pick up some bread and jam at the store.
Ex B: I need to pick some bread and jam up at the store.
You can put the object (some bread and jam) after the phrasal verb like inEx: A
Or you can put the object between the verb and the
preposition like in Ex B
However, Example A is clearer and thus is better to use
Trang 23even though both A and B are grammatically correct.
You need to know another part of using the separable phrasal verb
When you use phrasal verbs with pronouns (him, her, them, us, or it), thepronoun must come between the verb and its preposition
For example:
Ex: A: I need to pick up Jim from the airport.
Ex B: I need to pick him up from the airport.
Inseparable Phrasal Verbs
The second type of phrasal verb is inseparable
Some phrasal verbs must stay together
This means that when we want to use a direct or indirect object, it mustalways come after the complete phrasal verb
For Example – the phrasal verb “to look after” which in our example means
“to care for.”
Ex: Jesse, please look after my dogs this weekend.
Let’s now review the first 5 of 10 powerful phrasal verbs
Keywords: Back Up, Call Back, Drum Up, Fall Through, Get Ahead
1 back up - Separable
(1) to make a copy of something on a computer
Ex1: Don’t forget to back up your files on your computer or
Ex2: Don’t forget to back your files up on your computer.
(2) to give support.
Ex2: Will your friend back up your alibi? Or Will your friend back your alibi up?
