INTRODUCTION
Rationale
Linguistics is the study of language, which serves as a vital means of communication among individuals Effective communication involves expressing ideas and understanding the meanings behind spoken sentences An utterance can convey different meanings, distinguishing between what is said and its implied significance Implied meaning refers to messages that are not explicitly stated but carry hidden meanings According to Locastro (2012), pragmatics focuses on the speaker's intended message, emphasizing the importance of context in communication Furthermore, pragmatics encompasses not only the implied meanings within utterances but also the ability of interlocutors to grasp these deeper meanings beyond the literal words spoken.
Conversational implicature is prevalent in everyday life and is prominently featured in literary works, including movies, novels, and dramas Movies, a widely enjoyed form of entertainment, often utilize the intentional flouting of conversational implicature to convey hidden messages By exploring these implied meanings, viewers can gain deeper insights into the psychological states, attitudes, and beliefs of the characters, as well as the overarching themes of the film.
The movie script "Aladdin," written by Guy Ritchie and John August, tells the enchanting story of Aladdin, a kind-hearted petty thief who falls in love with the beautiful Princess Jasmine As Aladdin strives to win her affection, he discovers a mysterious oil lamp that houses a powerful genie, offering him the chance to fulfill his wishes However, their budding romance is threatened by the cunning Jafar, who seeks to exploit the lamp to seize control of the kingdom and wage war on neighboring communities The script also features dialogue rich in hidden meanings, prompting a deeper analysis of the conversational implicature present in the film.
