Who is responsible for the household chores at home? Use the collocations in Exercise 1 to write true sentences about you and your family Use the Present Simple and adverbs of frequency

E.g I always sweep the floor.

We say go abroad or study abroad NOT go to

abroad or study in abroad.

We say The cost of accommodation is included

in the fee NOT The cost of accommodations is included in the fee.

1 Travelling to learn a language is better a from England than from Argentina

2 Staying with a host family is cheaper b than staying at a hotel

3 Visiting other European countries is easier c than with a student visa

4 With a tourist visa, tickets are more expensive d than travelling by plane

5 Travelling by train is slower e than studying the language at an institute

3 Find words in Exercise 2 meaning

1 in a foreign country

2 family that offers accommodation to exchange students

3 positive aspects

4 belonging to different countries

Comparing different kinds of accommodation

In action!

Living at home can be more comfortable, but going

abroad on an exchange programme is a really

good decision

Paying for your studies is going to be easier because you

are going to work in your host country and your income

is going to be in their currency

Accommodation is going to be cheaper because you are

going to stay with a host family You are going to have

meals in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere – nicer than

having meals in a restaurant

And, the best thing is you are going to learn more about

the country’s culture

Having a student visa, you are going to get cheaper tickets

to visit museums and to travel by train It can be slower than

travelling by plane, but you can see more of the country

You are going to make new friends from many

different countries You are going to solve

the most difficult and the easiest problems

together That friendship is going to last forever.

Studying abroad is the opportunity of a lifetime!

As the saying goes, “Man cannot discover new

oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight

of the shore.”

You are going to take a lot of photos Other European countries are going to be nearer, so it is going to be easier to visit them You are not going to have to travel long distances

A room in the university halls of residence is more

comfortable than one at a student hostel.

Staying in a room at a student hostel is more

expensive than staying with a host family, but it's cheaper than renting a flat.

• Now you know how different people help

at home.

• Who is the best at doing the different

chores?

Trang 14

We use one to replace a singular countable noun

E.g A room at the university residence is more comfortable than one at a students’ hostel.

We use ones to replace a plural countable noun.

E.g Meals at the university canteen are cheaper than the ones at a restaurant.

We can use a / an / the / some + adjective +

He’s going to be at home

It not 8 in the park

We’re not going to run in the park.

park

The future with going to

We usually use than after comparatives.

E.g A 2-star hotel is cheaper than a 5-star hotel / A 5-star hotel is more expensive than a 2-star hotel.

We use the before superlative adjectives.

E.g Travel and learn is the best option / A hotel is the most comfortable option.

I’m not going to play tennis = I am not going to

play tennis.

She’s not going to work = She isn’t going to

work = She is not going to work.

We’re not going to read = We aren’t going to

read = We are not going to read.

Remember!

1 Circle the correct options to find out about William’s plans for Saturday.

Next Saturday, I 1 ’m going to work / ’m not going to work so I 2 ’m going to invite / ’m not going to invite

some friends for dinner We 3 are all going to help / aren’t going to help Sally is a great cook She

Comic strips

Comic strip plan

We need to plan the story.

It has got one or more characters (E.g Bernie

and mum)

There is a beginning and an end to the story.

There is a setting (Where are the characters?)

1 Read the comic strip and answer

1 Who are the characters?

2 What does Bernie promise mum?

3 What is his idea?

4 How does he feel at the end? Why?

2 Now plan your comic strip

1 Number of frames

2 Characters

Comic strip format

A comic strip is a sequence of

drawings that tell a story.

Each part

is called a frame.

Comic strips usually have between 3 and 6 frames.

We use speech bubbles

to show what the characters

are saying.

We use thought bubbles

to show what the characters

are thinking.

We use onomatopoeia to add emotion.

We use captions to add information that is not in the dialogue.

Art and the arts

1 Complete the diagram with words from the box.

By Rebecca Klass

1 William Shakespeare wrote his

tragedy Romeo and Juliet in the late

16th century, between 1591 and 1595,

but the first published version only

appeared in 1597 The story of the two

lovers of Verona has been told in many

different ways since then

2 Sergei Prokofiev recreated the story in

1935 in his superb ballet It was premiered

in the Mahen Theatre, Brno on 30th

December 1938 and it soon became part

of the traditional Soviet repertoire Many

choreographers around the world created

their own productions and danced this ballet

In June 2003, two stars of the American Ballet Theatre, the Argentine Julio Bocca and the Italian Alessandra Ferri, danced their own magical and moving version of the ballet for the last time

In 1975, the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí retold the story in ten rare illustrations

A publishing house printed them in 999 numbered books Copy number 819 is on display at the Lockport Street Gallery in Plainfield, Illinois

3 A wide variety of films also retold the tragic story of the two lovers of Verona Franco Zeffirelli made a film of it in 1968 It was an instant success The stars were Leonard Witting and Olivia Hussey, who were both adolescents at the

time The age of the protagonists was one of the main reasons for the positive response from the audience and the critics Later, in 1996, Baz Luhrmann directed the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The film was set in a modern-day city, but the protagonists spoke the original language The result was a fascinating blend of the contemporary and classical

4 In 2010, the famous director, Rupert Goold directed the stage play Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Shakespeare Company The critics loved this production featuring Sam Troughton and Mariah Gale in the title roles The setting was a Verona that was both ‘contemporary and traditionally Elizabethan,’ as The New York Times described it

you remember things

Make travel and accommodation

arrangements You should book tickets for

your flight and the hotel room in advance You

should also check if there are any religious

and local holidays because businesses and

restaurants could be closed.

Organise an itinerary and share it with a family

member, a friend or a co-worker Include flight

information, local travel details, the name and

telephone number of the hotel where you'll be

staying, and meeting times and places They

can then contact you if necessary.

Check that your documents are in order You

shouldn’t travel with a passport that is about

to expire Double-check the expiry date and

renew it if necessary

CLIL ART

1 Match the paintings in the text to the descriptions of the different art movements.

Cubism Artists uses little cubes and other shapes Objects and people are often

painted from many different angles and in different shades of a colour

Impressionism Artists uses bold colours, and thick dabs and blobs of paint There are

no clear outlines or much details, with one colour blending into the next and almost no boundaries between them These paintings are mainly

of outdoor scenes and often play on images of fog, sunlight, clouds and reflections on water

Pop Art These art pieces show commonplace objects and recognisable imagery,

and artists make use of bright colours, innovative techniques, mixed media and collage

Renaissance Art This was the first time in history that artists represented the world in

a three-dimensional, realistic manner, using techniques to give their paintings a sense of depth Subjects were mostly religious Non-religious paintings tended to be individual portraits

Eating

healthily

to live well

NEWS GLOBAL NETWORK CONTACT TERMS & CONDITIONS

What’s the idea behind a healthy diet?

Should you weigh everything you eat?

Not at all!

You just need to learn how to eat healthily while eating what you enjoy You can find good help in the ‘Healthy Eating Plate’ It shows the proportions of different foods you should use to create balanced meals

Vegetables and fruit cover half of your

plate They provide colour and variety

and they are a good source of fibres

Remember that potatoes don’t count as

vegetables in this plate

Whole grains are a quarter part of the plate You can choose from whole wheat, quinoa, oats, brown rice, and foods made with them They help to control blood sugar and insulin Besides, quinoa is a good source of protein

Another quarter of your plate should be filled with proteins Fish, chicken, beans and nuts can be served with salad or mixed into it You should eat less bacon and sausages because processed meats are not good for your health

Use healthy oils (like olive, coconut and canola oil) for cooking and for salads

Limit butter and avoid trans fat Remember that ‘low-fat’ does not mean ‘healthy’

Drink water, tea or coffee Take only one or two servings of milk or dairy products, and only a small glass of juice per day Avoid sugary drinks completely because they have little, if any, nutritional value

And that is not all You must stay active if you want to control your weight Walking for forty minutes three times a week can help you a lot You could walk or ride your bike to work or to the shops That will add some exercise to your routine
