PASSIVE VOICE

1. Simple present

S + V (s/es) + O => O + IS/ ARE/ AM + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: John delivers the newspapers every morning.

=> The newspapers are delivered by John every morning.

2. Present continuous

S + IS/ ARE/ AM + Ving + O => O + IS/ ARE/ AM + BEING + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: He is asking me a lot of questions => I am being asked a lot of questions.

3. Present perfect

S + HAVE/ HAS + PP + O => O + HAVE/ HAS + BEEN + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: My mother has made that cake => That cake has been made by my mother.

4. Simple past

S + Ved + O => O + WAS/ WERE + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: She wrote this letter => This letter was written by her.

5. Past continuous

S + WAS/ WERE + Ving + O => O + WAS/ WERE + BEING + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: She was doing her homework at that time => Her homework was being done at that time.

6. Past perfect

S + HAD + PP + O => O + HAD + BEEN + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: They had prepared a dinner before we came => A dinner had been prepared before we came.

7. Simple future

S + WILL + Vinf + O => O + WILL + BE + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: The teacher will correct our exercises => Our exercises will be corrected by the teacher.

8. Future perfect

S + WILL + HAVE + PP + O => O + WILL + HAVE + BEEN + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: In two years’ time he will have finished the painting.

=> In two years’ time the painting will have been finished.

S + TO BE GOING TO + Vinf + O => O + TO BE GOING TO BE + PP

9. Modal verbs with passive voice

S + Modal Verbs + Vinf + O => O + Modal Verbs + BE + PP + (BY S)

E.g.: She can answer this question => This question can be answered.

10. Other forms

- S + HAVE/ HAS + O (person) + Vinf + O (thing) => S + HAVE/ HAS + O (thing) + PP

E.g.: I had him repair my bike yesterday => I had my bike repaired yesterday.

- S + GET + O (person) + TO Vinf + O (thing) => S + GET + O (thing) + PP

E.g.: I get her to make some coffee => I get some coffee made.

- S + MAKE/ LET + O + Vinf => O + TO BE + MADE/ LET + TO Vinf

E.g.: My mother let me go out last night => I was let to go out.

- S1 + V1 + (THAT) + CLAUSE (S2 + V2 + O2)

=> IT TO BE + (V1) PP (THAT) + CLAUSE (S2 + V2 + O2)

=> S2 + TO BE + (V1) PP + TO Vinf (present)

+ TO HAVE + PP (past)

E.g.: People say that he is a famous singer

=> It is said that he is a famous singer.

=> He is said to be a famous singer.

They thought that Mary had gone away.

=> Mary was thought to have gone away.

=> It was thought that Mary had gone away.

Exercise 1: Changes these following sentences into passive voice.
