IEC 60332 3 25 Edition 1 1 2009 02 INTERNATIONAL STANDARD NORME INTERNATIONALE Tests on electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions – Part 3 25 Test for vertical flame spread of vertically[.]

General

The apparatus specified in IEC 60332-3-10 shall be used.

Ignition source

The ignition source shall be one ribbon-type propane gas burner as specified in IEC 60332-3-10

Test sample

The test sample shall comprise a number of test pieces of cable from the same production length, each having a minimum length of 3,5 m

The total number of test pieces in the test sample shall be that number required to provide a nominal total volume of non-metallic material of 0,5 l/m of test sample

The test sample shall be chosen within the limitations given in annex A

The test pieces forming the test sample shall be conditioned at a temperature of (20 ± 10) °C for at least 16 h before commencing the test The test pieces shall be dry.

Determination of the number of test pieces

In order to calculate the appropriate number of test pieces, it is necessary to determine the volume per metre of non-metallic material of one test piece

A cable measuring at least 0.3 meters is meticulously cut to ensure that its surfaces are perpendicular to the cable axis, allowing for accurate length measurements.

The density of each non-metallic component, including cellular material, must be measured appropriately, as outlined in clause 8 of IEC 60811-1-3, to ensure values are expressed to two decimal places.

All non-metallic materials, denoted as C i, must be extracted from the test piece and weighed Non-metallic materials constituting less than 5% of the total non-metallic mass will be assumed to have a density of 1.0 kg/dm³.

Where semi-conducting screens cannot be removed from the insulating material, the components may be considered as one for the purpose of measuring their mass and density

The volume V i (litres per metre of cable) of each non-metallic material C i is calculated as follows: ×l i i i ρ

M i is the mass of the component C i (kg); ρi is the density of the component C i (kg/dm³); l is the length of the test piece of cable (m)

The total volume, V, of the non-metallic materials contained in 1 m of cable is equal to the sum of the individual volumes V 1 , V 2 , etc

To determine the closest integer for the number of test pieces to be mounted, divide the volume per meter specified in section 5.1 by the total volume, V, of non-metallic material per meter of cable If the result is 0.5 or above, round it up to the next whole number.

Mounting of the test sample

Each test piece must be securely fastened to each rung of the ladder using metal wire, either individually or in an array, with a diameter ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm, made of either steel or copper.

Test pieces must be affixed to the front of the standard ladder in a touching arrangement, with one or more layers, not exceeding a total width of 300 mm Additionally, a minimum distance must be maintained.

50 mm between the edge of the test sample and the inside of the ladder uprights

When positioning test pieces, the initial piece or array should be placed near the center of the ladder, with additional test pieces or arrays added symmetrically on both sides to ensure the test sample is approximately centered.

When additional layers of test pieces are needed after the initial layer has covered the full width of the ladder, the first test piece in the subsequent layer should be placed near the center of the ladder Additional test pieces should then be added symmetrically on either side to ensure that the new layer is approximately centered on the ladder.

To create a test sample with a large number of test pieces, attach them in flat arrays of cables, with a maximum width of five pieces per rung of the ladder using the specified metal wire For consistency, secure adjacent cable arrays together at each rung to maintain contact between them (see figure 1).

Flame application time

The test flame will be applied for 20 minutes and then extinguished The airflow rate in the test chamber must be maintained until all cable burning or glowing has stopped, or for a maximum of 1 hour, after which any remaining burning or glowing of the cable will be extinguished.

After all cable burning or glowing has ceased or been extinguished, the test sample shall be wiped clean

Soot can be disregarded if the original surface remains undamaged after cleaning, and any softening or deformation of non-metallic materials is also not considered The extent of flame spread is assessed by measuring the damage in meters, recorded to two decimal places, from the bottom edge of the burner to the point where charring begins The onset of char is identified by pressing a sharp object, such as a knife blade, against the cable surface; a transition from a resilient to a brittle, crumbling surface indicates the start of charring.

The performance requirements for specific types or classes of wire or cable should ideally be outlined in their respective individual standards If no specific requirements are provided, it is advisable to refer to the recommended performance criteria outlined in Annex B.

In case of a disputed failure, two further tests shall be undertaken as detailed in clause 5 The test shall be deemed as satisfactory if both tests meet the stated requirement

The test report must provide a comprehensive overview, including a full description of the tested cable and its manufacturer, as well as the specific standard against which the test was conducted It should detail the number of test pieces, the total volume of non-metallic material per meter of the test sample, and the method of mounting used Additionally, the report must specify the number of layers and test pieces in each layer, the flame application time (e.g., 20 minutes), the number of burners (e.g., one), the extent of damage observed, and the time taken for all burning or glowing to extinguish.

Guidance on cable selection for type approval testing

The choice of cable type and conductor cross-section for type approval testing shall be as given in the cable specification, or as agreed between purchaser and manufacturer

When selecting cables for testing, it is crucial to consider the limited capacity of the ladders and the conductor cross-section This ensures that the volume of non-metallic material fits within the prescribed mounting method.

IEC 60332 shall comply with the following:

• only the front face of the ladder shall be used;

• the minimum number of test pieces in each layer shall be two;

• there are no other restrictions on the selection of cables

A summary of all conditions for type approval testing to this part of IEC 60332 is given in table A.1

Each non-metallic material C_i must be removed from the sample and weighed Any non-metallic material contributing less than 5% to the total non-metallic mass of the cable section should be regarded as having a density of 1.0 kg/dm³.

When semiconductor screens cannot be separated from insulating materials, they are regarded as part of the insulation for measuring their mass and density.

The nearest whole number (with 0.5 and above rounding up to 1) of cable sections to be installed is calculated by dividing the specified volume per meter in section 5.1 by the total volume, V, of non-metallic material per meter of cable.

Montage de l’échantillon d’essai

Each cable segment must be secured, either individually or as part of a row, to each rung of the ladder using a metal wire (made of steel or copper) with a diameter ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm.

When assembling cable sections, the first section or row of cable sections should be positioned approximately at the center of the scale, with additional sections or rows added from each side to ensure that the test sample is roughly centered on the scale.

If a second layer (or more) of cable sections is required after the entire width of the ladder has been utilized for the first layer (or subsequent layers), then the first section or row of cable sections in the second layer (or beyond) should be positioned approximately at the center of the ladder Additional sections or rows should be added from each side to ensure that the second layer (or subsequent layers) is approximately centered on the ladder.

LICENSED TO MECON Limited - RANCHI/BANGALORE FOR INTERNAL USE AT THIS LOCATION ONLY, SUPPLIED BY BOOK SUPPLY BUREAU.

If a large number of cable sections is required to form the test sample, the cable sections can be attached using specified metallic wire to each rung of the ladder, arranged in rows of flat cables with a maximum width of five cable sections To ensure uniformity, it is recommended that adjacent rows of cables be secured together at each rung to maintain a cohesive arrangement (see Figure 1).

Durée d'application de la flamme

The test flame should be applied for 20 minutes, after which it must be extinguished The airflow through the test chamber must be maintained until the cable's combustion or incandescence has stopped, or for a maximum duration of 1 hour, after which any remaining combustion or incandescence of the cable must be extinguished.

The soot is disregarded if, after cleaning, the original surface remains undamaged Similarly, softened or deformed areas of non-metallic materials are not considered The flame propagation must be measured as the extent of the damaged area, recorded in meters to two decimal places, from the bottom edge of the burner to the boundary of the charred zone This boundary is determined by applying pressure with a sharp object, such as a knife blade, against the surface of the cable The limit of the charred area is identified by a change in the surface behavior, transitioning from elastic to brittle (friable).

It is advisable that performance specifications for a specific type or class of wire or cable be outlined in the individual cable standard In the absence of any specified requirements, it is recommended to refer to the performance specifications provided in Annex B.

When a non-satisfactory test result is disputed, two additional tests must be conducted as specified in Article 5 The test will be deemed satisfactory if both additional tests meet the prescribed requirements.

LICENSED TO MECON Limited - RANCHI/BANGALORE FOR INTERNAL USE AT THIS LOCATION ONLY, SUPPLIED BY BOOK SUPPLY BUREAU.

The test report must include the following information: a complete description of the tested cable, the manufacturer of the cable, the specific standard under which the test was conducted, the number of cable sections, the total volume of non-metallic material per test sample of the cable sections, the mounting method (i.e., joint arrangement), the number of layers and sections of cable in each layer, the duration of flame application (i.e., 20 minutes), the number of burners used (i.e., one), the extent of the damaged area, and the duration of any combustion or glowing extinction.

The selection of the cable type and conductor cross-section for type acceptance testing must adhere to the specifications outlined in the cable documentation or be agreed upon by both the buyer and the manufacturer.

The limited capacity of scales necessitates careful consideration when selecting the test cable section to ensure compatibility with the prescribed mounting method for non-metallic materials Additionally, the selection of cables for this part of IEC 60332 must meet specific requirements.

• seule la faỗe avant de l'ộchelle doit ờtre utilisộe;

• le nombre minimal de tronỗons de cõble dans chaque couche doit ờtre de deux;
