Foreword

This document (EN 13126-13:2012) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 33 “Doors, windows, shutters, building hardware and curtain walling”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by November 2012, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn

at the latest by November 2012

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights CEN [and/or CENELEC] shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights

This document supersedes CEN/TS 13126-13:2004

The following is a list of the technical changes made since the previous edition of this standard, organised according to their relevant clauses:

a) Clause 3, Terms and definitions:

1) Reduced to two definitions, 3.1 and 3.2;

b) Clause 4, Classification:

1) Three new grades added as per Table 2 in 4.9;

2) Window test sizes specified within EN 13126-13 as per Table 1 in 4.10;

3) Example of classification added in 4.11;

c) Clause 5, Requirements:

1) Requirements in the whole of Clause 5: completely revised;

2) New test procedures added:

i) Integrated maximum opening stop in 5.2;

ii) Free movement test in 5.3;

iii) Durability test in 5.4;

Normative and informative annexes to all parts of this European Standard are indicated in the contents of the seventeen parts

The performance tests incorporated in this standard are considered to be reproducible and as such will provide a consistent and objective assessment of the performance of these products throughout CEN-CENELEC Member States

1 Scope

This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for durability, strength, security and functionality of sash balances

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 13126-1:2011, EN 12519:2004 and the following apply

3.1

sash balance

device, generally fitted in a pair and used to counter-balance the mass of a vertically moving sash throughout its full travel

3.2

manually applied force

externally applied vertical force required to cause movement of the sliding sash when the sash balances are mounted in the test specimen

4 Classification

4.1 General

The classification for sash balances shall be in accordance with the requirements of Clause 4 of

EN 13126-1:2011

4.2 Category of use (1 – first digit)

No marking is required for the category of use in accordance with 4.2 of EN 13126-1:2011

4.3 Durability (2 – second digit)

Grades shall be in accordance with 4.3 of EN 13126-1:2011

4.4 Mass (3 – third digit)

The mass shall be the actual mass of the test sash

4.5 Fire resistance (4 – fourth digit)

One grade shall be identified in accordance with 4.5 of EN 13126-1:2011

 grade 0: no requirements

4.6 Safety in use (5 – fifth digit)

One grade shall be identified in accordance with 4.6 of EN 13126-1:2011

 grade 1: The sash balance shall conform to the requirements of EN 13126-1

4.7 Corrosion resistance (6 – sixth digit)

Grades shall be in accordance with 4.7 of EN 13126-1:2011

4.8 Security (7 – seventh digit)

No marking is required for the category of security in accordance with 4.8 of EN 13126-1:2011

4.9 Application (8 – eighth digit)

The eighth digit shall be assigned in accordance with Table 2

NOTE Table 2 shows the grades “13/1”, “13/2”, “13/3”, “13/4” “13/5”, “13/6”, “13/7” and “13/8”, which indicate the part

of the standard which was used for testing the sash balances and their rating

4.10 Test Sizes (9 – ninth digit)

The ninth digit shall show the test sizes in accordance with 4.10 of EN 13126-1:2011 as follows:

4.11 Example of classification for sash balances

The example above denotes sash balances which have the following classifications:

 Digit 4 fire resistance grade 0 (no requirements)

 Digit 6 corrosion resistance grade 3

 Digit 8 applicable part grade 13/5; tested in accordance with part 13 of this standard, and rated

as requiring an applied force of >30% test mass to initiate movement

S.H = sash height

5 Requirements

5.1 General

The requirements for sash balances shall be in accordance with Clause 5 of EN 13126-1:2011

NOTE Where a sash balance is adjustable, it should be set according to the manufacturer's recommendations

5.2 Integrated maximum opening stop

Where sash balances are fitted with an integrated maximum opening stop, the opening stop shall also be tested in accordance with EN 13126-5

5.3 Free movement test

The test specified in 7.2 shall be used to ensure the sash balances can support the mass of the sash

Upon completion of the free movement test in accordance with 7.2, the maximum travel distance shall not exceed 25 mm

5.4 Durability test

The test specified in 7.3 shall be used to ensure the sash balances are capable of continued operation after cycling in accordance with grades specified in 7.3, and with regard given to normal maintenance

Upon completion of the durability test in accordance with 7.3, the sash balances shall continue to function normally

5.5 Resistance to manually applied load test

The test specified in 7.4 shall be used to ensure the sash balances are graded in relation to the ease of sash movement

Upon completion of the manually applied load test in accordance with 7.4, the manually applied force shall not exceed the value given in Table 2

5.6 Corrosion resistance test

The sash balance shall be tested and classified in accordance with EN 1670

6 Test apparatus

6.1 Sash balances installed in the test specimen

The sash balances shall be installed in the test specimen for testing in accordance with Clause 6 of

EN 13126-1:2011

NOTE Please note the manufacturer’s fixing instructions

6.2 Test specimens from the sash balance manufacturer

The test specimens shall be accompanied by a drawing of the profile cross-section All relevant maintenance and operation information shall be enclosed with the test specimen; it shall also contain the necessary test specimen installation information for the windows

6.3 Test rig

The test shall be conducted on a test rig which corresponds in function and shape to the window for which the sash balance is intended

6.4 Hardware

The tested sash balance shall conform to the manufacturer's recommendation for size and mass of the test specimen

7 Test methods

7.1 Samples

Three samples shall be used for testing in accordance with this European Standard

 Sample B - corrosion test

 Sample C - retained for reference control

NOTE 1 Sample B should only be required if the manufacturer of the sash balance cannot supply a test report in accordance with EN 1670

NOTE 2 Sample C should be retained by the test institute for the duration of the validity of the test report

7.2 Free movement test procedure

Position the sliding sash with the sash (50 ± 1) mm from the fully closed position (see Figure A.1 for top sliding sash; see Figure A.3 for bottom sliding sash)

Remove all external forces and record any movement of the sliding sash over a period of 60 s

Position the sliding sash with the sash (50 ± 1) mm from the fully open position (see Figure A.2 for top sliding sash; see Figure A.4 for bottom sliding sash)

Remove all external forces and record any movement of the sliding sash over a period of 60 s

NOTE The fully open position may be determined by maximum opening stops

Acceptance criteria are in accordance with 8.4 of EN 13126-1:2011, and 5.3 of this standard

7.3 Durability test procedure

The sash balance(s) shall be mounted

NOTE 1 Please note the manufacturer’s fitting instructions
