1 Scope and field ofappl cation

This stand rd specifies the method used for the

determination of the refactiv e index a pl ca le for

transp rent materials used in air raft g lazing

2 Purpose ofthe m ethod

This method is used for the control of purity and

composition of materials

The ref activ e index shal be considered when

desig ning the p rts

3 Definition

The ref activ e index n is the ratio of the v elocity

of l g ht in a v acu m to that in the material

measured at23°C for the sodium D lne

4 Apparatus and m aterial

4.1 A bbe r efr a ctometer or any other refactometer

that can be shown to g iv e the same results, the

5 Specim ens

The test specimen cut f om the sample shal be of

such a siz as wi fit on the face of the fixed half of

the ref actometer prisms

For the Abbe refactometer the dimensions are as

folows:

— 6 mm wide,

— 1 mm long ,

— 3 mm thick

For neces ary ac uracy the sur ace of the test

specimen in contact with the prism shal be

suficiently flat and pol shed in order to obtain

satis actory contact betwe n the test specimen and

the prism This contact is indicated b the div iding

l ne betwe n the l g ht and d rk halv es of the

ey epiece field a pearing sharp and straig ht

A second sur ace is prep red u der the same

conditions perpendicular to the fir t and on one end

of the test specimen These two suraces shal

inter ect along a sharp lne without a bev eled or

rou ded edg e

6 Conditioning

The specimen shal be preconditioned

at( 23±2)°C,( 50±5)% relativ e h midity for at

least4 h prior to testing Before the determination,

the a p ratus shal reach the same conditions

The test is to be per ormed immediately after

conditioning

7 Procedur

The procedure for the Abbe refactometer is

des ribed herebelow For other refactometer the

procedure ma be modified if neces ary

The determination is car ied out at ( 23±0,5)°C A

smal drop of the contacting lquid is placed on the

polshed surace of the test specimen which is then

placed in firm contact with the sur ace of the prism

with the polshed smal edg e of the specimen

towards the sour e of l g ht The index arm of the

refactometer is then a justed u ti half of the

ey epiece field is d rk The compensator ( Amici

prisms) drum is then a justed u ti al colour is

remov ed f om the field, after which the index arm is

a justed b means of the v ernier u ti the div iding

lne betwe n the lg ht and d rk portions of the field

coincides ex ctly with the point of inter ection of the

ey epiece c os hair

The refactiv e index for the sodium D lne is then

rea on the instrument s ale

8 Test report

The test report shal include the folowing

information:

— reference to this stand rd

— ref activ e index to the nearest sig nificant

fig ure war anted b the precision and

repeata i ty of measurement ( if the refactiv e

index is ex res ed to more than thre sig nificant

fig ures, the wav eleng th of l g ht for which the

measurement was ma e is also reported)

— position on the orig inal sample f om which the

test specimen was cut
