c o m p i l a t i o n of the a u t o m o t i v e gear lubricant tests used to

services are p r e s e n t l y c o n s i d e r e d o b s o l e t e by API because: the test e q u i p m e n t o r i g i n a l l y used to define these s e r v i c e s is no longer available; and a l t e r n a t e e q u i p m e n t / p r o c e d u r e s have not

contains 1987 v e r s i o n s of the original GL-5 p e r f o r m a n c e tests updated under the g u i d a n c e of ASTM

Gear l u b r i c a n t s have changed s i g n i f i c a n t l y over the past four decades in response to p e r f o r m a n c e demands imposed by changes in

o p e r a t i n g conditions, design and m e t a l l u r g y of a u t o m o t i v e axles

A u t o m o t i v e Manual T r a n s m i s s i o n s and Axles ~ allows m a t c h i n g

six L u b r i c a n t Service D e s i g n a t i o n s , (API GL-I through GL-6)

states in q u a l i t a t i v e terms the kind of s e r v i c e in w h i c h a gear

of gears and the o p e r a t i n g c o n d i t i o n s for the l u b r i c a n t are

included in each Service Designation

S u p p l e m e n t i n g of the q u a l i t a t i v e API D e s i g n a t i o n s with

p e r f o r m a n c e d e f i n i t i o n s is needed p a r t i c u l a r l y for D e s i g n a t i o n s

series of tests and a s s o c i a t e d m i n i m u m p e r f o r m a n c e requirements Under the API, ASTM, SAE T r i p a r t i t e System, a L u b r i c a n t

P e r f o r m a n c e and Service C l a s s i f i c a t i o n M a i n t e n a n c e P r o c e d u r e - SAE Ji146 November 1980 (1986 SAE H a n d b o o k 3:23.47) - is

d e s i g n e d to keep abreast of c h a n g i n g r e q u i r e m e n t s by r e d e f i n i n g existing categories, adding new or d e c l a r i n g as o b s o l e t e

The p u r p o s e of this p u b l i c a t i o n is to p r o v i d e d e t a i l e d

independent test p r o c e d u r e s are required to d e f i n e API GL-5

that 80 percent of gear lubricants p r o d u c e d are formulated to satisfy the API GL-5 Service Designation

API GL-5 p e r f o r m a n c e tests o r i g i n a t e d with the U.S Army Gear

encompass m u l t i g r a d e oils, SAE 80W-90 and 85W-140 in 1976 (MIL- L-2105C), but p e r f o r m a n c e requirements were unchanged

The following are excerpts from the LRI "Procedures of the Gear Lubricants R e v i e w Committee for R e v i e w at Gear L u b r i c a n t s Under

M o t o r i n g Phase - The test unit is charged with 2.5 pt (1.2 L) of test oil, then driven by an electric motor at

2500 rpm p i n i o n speed in an u n l o a d e d c o n d i t i o n (no axle

of d i s t i l l e d water is added and a pressure relief valve, set at 1 psi (approx 7 kPa) is installed in the oil fill opening (all other test unit openings are already

m o t o r i n g phase continues for four hours at this

c o n t r o l l e d temperature

At the c o m p l e t i o n of the m o t o r i n g phase, the m o t o r i n g is stopped; drive shaft, heat lamp and fan are removed Next, an a l u m i n u m box with double walls and fan for air
