Dev elopment of specifications for new w ork and maintenance
T his part of ISO 12 4 deals with the development of spe ific tions for cor osion prote tion of
ste l structure , using prote tive paint systems It relate to new work and maintenanc in the
work shop or on site and is also appl c ble to the cor osion prote tion of individual components
T his part of ISO 12 4 conc rns the cor osion protection of ste l structures ex os d to different
cor osion stre s s by environments such a indoors, open-air and immersion in water or burial in
soi , a w el a spe ial stre s s, for example due to medium or high temperature T he ne d for
different durabi ity range is considered
Ste l surfac s that have been hot dip-galvanized, metal-sprayed, zinc-ele troplated or
sherardized, and previously painted ste l sur a e , are also covered by this part of ISO 12 44
In annex B, referenc are s for a s s ing the qual ty of the cor osion prote tion work and the
performanc of the prote tive paint systems us d are de lt with A nnexe C and D provide
detai ed flow charts f or planning new work and maintenanc , which should be taken into a count
when w riting a specific tion
If extreme cor osion stre s s or high temperatures oc ur, or the prote tive paint systems are to
be us d on other substrate such as non-fer ous metals or concrete, the spe ific tions wi have
to tak e this into ac ount T his part of ISO 1294 may also be us d a a guide in such c s s

3.8 specif ic tion: A te hnic l document de cribing al the requirements that are to be obs rved
when a ste l structure is to be prote ted against cor osion by using protective paint systems
Such a document consists of s veral individual spe ific tions - project spe ific tion, prote tive
paint system spe ific tion, paint work specific tion, inspe tion and a s s ment spe ific tion - a
defined in 3.8.1 to 3.8.4
3.8.1 project specif ic tion: T he spe if ic tion that de cribe the project and the requirements
relating specific l y to it
NOTE Th specifi r of a project sp cific tio may, for e ample, b th ow ner of th structure to b

an off shore construction) consisting of more than one constituent element (3.1) There may be
one or more structure in any given proje t (3.7)
4 How to dev elop a specif ic tion f or new w ork or maintenance
It is re ommended that the spe ifier considers the information given in claus 5, and e tabl she
which spe ific tion(s) apply/appl e to the proje t or constituent element to be prote ted Then,
the spe ifier should chec in the respe tive table, item by item, which of the items l sted are to be
tak en into a count in the spe ific tion T he various items are supported by detai ed information
given in the "Remark s" column in tables 1 to 4, and in the annexe
W hen writing a spe ific tion f or new work or maintenanc , it is important to chos the most
suitable prote tive paint system T o achieve this al relevant parameters shal be tak en into
consideration, for example:
- required durabi ty;
- environmental conditions and spe ial stre s s;
- sur a e preparation;
- different generic ty es of paint;
- number and ty e of coats [priming coat(s) intermediate coat(s) and top coat(s) ;
- methods of appl c tion and appl c tion requirements;
- plac of appl c tion (shop or site)
- s affolding requirements;
- requirements regarding (future) maintenanc (if any)
- he lth and s fety requirements;
- environmental prote tion requirements
T he e parameters are de cribed in detai in ISO 12 4 -1 to ISO 1294 -7 In this part of ISO 12 4 ,
only such information is given w hich is considered to be particularly important to the spe ifier
In the drafting of a specific tion for maintenanc work on a structure or constituent element, a
decision has to be tak en betwe n
- complete renew al and
- partial removal of the protective paint system inv lved
Trang 12W hen complete renewal ha be n de ided, the spe ific tion should preferably be developed in
a cordanc w ith a spe ific tion for new work , e.g using the form given in annex G
A t an e rly stage in the drafting of a proje t spe ific tion, a final de ision w il have to be tak en by
the specifier on es ential planning parameters, such a prote tion of sl p-resistant conne tions
using high- ensi e bolts, the inside surfac s of hol ow s ctions and other hidden ste l surfac s
(s e ISO 12 4 -3 for detai s of de ign)
Exclusions, i e items not to be painted, shal be indic ted in the spe ific tion(s)
T he choic of prote tive paint systems shal be ba ed on pra tic l experienc and/or the re ults
of laboratory performanc te ts, particularly when new coating te hnology is inv lved The
protective paint systems shal be te ted for compatibi ty with existing coatings on previously
coated sur a e
T he spe ifier shal further tak e into a count regulations and/or requirements relating to
environmental protection, he lth and s fety, and work ing conditions in the shop or on site
Be aus national requirements conc rning he lth and s f ety at work , pol ution control etc vary
signific ntly, it may not be pos ible to include detai ed information covering such requirements
in a spe ific tion Howev er, the spe ific tion shal draw at ention to the ne d to comply with
cur ent loc l, regional, national and international legislation and regulations
5 Conte ts of a specif ic tion
