Choosing - The First Step to Success

How to Choose Right Direct Sales Com pany for you!

Direct Sales is often the first choice of business for m om s who want to work at hom e There’s low risk, low overhead, the product has already been created and if worked right it can becom e very profitable So,start a hom e business in direct sales, right?!? Sure, but that’s easier said than done There is literallyhundreds of direct sales com panies around So, how do you know which com pany is right for you? Thefollowing book was created as a resource to help you choose the best business for you The first step tosuccess is choosing The success of your business depends on your choice

Of course everyone knows to ask the fam ous question “How m uch do I m ake?” when choosing a directsales com pany As we know this is definitely an im portant question to be answered because well, we aregoing into business to m ake m oney, right? That’s a fine question and should definitely be on your list but,

it also m ost certainly should not be your only question If you’re new to direct sales you m ay not know how

m uch really is involved and what you should be asking Your first step of course is choosing a com panythat is right for you This is an extrem ely im portant factor in whether or not you succeed

The best way to use this book is to read through com pletely taking note of the questions listed that aregoing to m atter to you m ost At then end of this book you will find a com parison work sheet that you canprint out As you’re researching each com pany fill in the blanks for each one that are m ost im portant inyour decision Once all of your questions have been answered to your satisfaction you’ll want to startcom paring notes to see which com pany fits you best

You will find exam ples of different com panies throughout this book W e are not affiliated with thesecom panies (unless otherwise noted) and are not necessarily recom m ending one or the other over

another These exam ples are sim ply for the purpose of educating and nothing else

DirectSalesHelpers.com or any of its partners/affiliates cannot and will not be held accountable for anyDirect Sales Com pany listed and/or their partners/affiliates As anything else you m ust do your ownresearch also This book has been created only for assisting you in your choice DirectSalesHelpers.comand/or any of its partners/affiliates can guarantee anyone any incom e am ounts You will be responsible forwhat you earn by what you put into your business

Different com panies have different nam es for their sales people Consultant, specialists, representativesand distributors are just to nam e a few In the interest of sim plicity, from here on in we will say

“Consultants” while referring to any other sim ilar nam es such as the ones m entioned

Products

The very first aspect you’re going to want to take a look at are the com pany’s products This is the m ostcrucial part of the decision m aking You absolutely have to love the products and believe in them You’llwant to have a passion for the products you’re going to be selling If you don’t like the m erchandise orbelieve in the m erchandise yourself you’re not going to be able to be a good sales person This will beexactly why when you do becom e a consultant you’ll find that at DirectSalesHelpers.com we recom m endyour best recruits are past custom ers

The best way to test this of course is to try the product yourself Ask the consultant you’re working with for

a sam ple If sam ples aren’t available I highly recom m end purchasing at least one thing Being in salesyou’re going to have to know you product The product m ost sold is the product m ost recom m ended

YO U have to be your best own custom er

Promotion Online Advertising

T Can you advertise online?

There are a handful of direct sales com panies that don’t allow consultants to advertise online Of course, ifyou have no intentions of selling online this won’t be a problem for you However, m any like to do business

Trang 3

online exclusively If this is what you’re intending to do you’ll want to pay close attention to the regulations

of the com pany you’re interested in

Another sem i-com m on rule is about using the com panies nam e in your advertising cam paigns W e’veseen m any consultants who have dealt with this problem by com ing up with their own creative nam e For

exam ple for som eone who sells Pampered Chef m ay want to call their business Kitty’s Kitchen Goodies.

This actually isn’t necessarily a bad thing either You’ll find once you are involved with your com panyhaving your own creative business nam e could be an advantage Being unique in direct sales is a hugebenefit

Com petition

T How m any consultants are there in your com m unity?

A little com petition never hurt anyone but a lot of com petition could cause som e problem s Let’s say for

exam ple you’re looking into the Mary Kay opportunity and there’s three other consultants in your own

hom etown of 300 This is probably not your best choice You’re best bet is to find out who is selling whatand where in ratio to the population of your area You m ay also find that finding a non-com peting com pany

m ay be beneficial Using the Mary Kay consultant as an exam ple again, m aybe you could sell som ething such as Gabby Goodies You and a Mary Kay consultant could join forces and coordinate a fundraiser to benefit a local charity Maybe the two of you could hold a party with Mary Kay m ake overs and Gabby

Goodie appetizers Another idea would be to hold a local expo including several consultants from other

com panies or hold a job/career fair Use your im agination the possibilities are endless

Now as I m entioned also a little bit of com petition won’t hurt Actually com petition tends to keep people ontheir toes and holds them accountable for their actions Som e would even go as far to say the m ore the

m errier Two consultants from the sam e area and com pany could join forces, share the workload and splitthe profits (Be very careful and picky of who you choose if you should do this.)

Ultim ately the best thing would be to do your research on your own area and find what will work best foryou Make a list of the pros and cons of the ratio of consultants to population and use your best

judgem ent If you are still unsure then I would recom m end looking for another non-com petitive com pany

Territories

T Are there any territory restrictions?

Som e com panies assign specific areas to consultants that they are allowed to do business in For

exam ple you m ay only be able to hold parties in XX town because som eone else is assigned XX town. This could be a benefit or it could lim it you This would depend on what you want If you don’t m ind staying

in one area without expanding this could be a benefit because no one else would be able to hold parties inyour area Som e this would hinder them because they don’t m ind reaching out farther and expanding Decide which you would rather and find out if the com pany you’re interested in has any restrictions

Party Requirem ents

T Are you required to hold hom e parties?

T If so, is there a certain am ount you are required to hold in a certain am ount of tim e?

T Tim e-wise are you going to be able to accom plish this?

I honestly can’t say that I have seen any m ajor restrictions on how m any parties you are required to hold(that doesn’t m ean it doesn’t exist) except for the occasional that require so m any for the initial start up

Prom otional M aterials

T Are you able to perm itted to purchase prom otional m aterials from som ewhere else?

T Are you perm itted to m ake your own prom otional m aterials?

A few direct sales com panies only allow you to purchase business cards, flyers and other prom otionalitem s from them directly If so, be sure to ask about the prices of such m aterials and research what it

would cost you from other com panies Let’s use Vista Print for exam ple Here you can get 250 business

cards for free (you have to pay $8.95 for shipping & handling) W hat does it cost to buy them through yourcom pany? I’m not saying this should be a deciding factor in your choice but it is definitely som ething to

Trang 4

keep in m ind Prom otional item s such as business cards are an im portant part of prom oting your

business Be sure to shop around and com pare prices

Quotas/Inventory

T Are there any quotas?

A quota is a certain am ount of m erchandise/products that you m ust purchase in a certain am ount of tim e

to stay ‘active’ For exam ple with The Greeting Cake Company you m ust m ake at least one purchase each quarter no m atter the size and with Gabby Goodies there are no quotas to m eet Each com pany has

their own rules/regulations concerning this issue Be sure to find what they are and if you can afford them

If the com pany you are interested in does require tim ely purchases you need to m ake sure you have this

in your budget You need to look at it as though if you didn’t m ake any sales are you able to purchase the

m inim um required Of course we know you’ll never go without any sales but this way you’ll know you arecovered

A few m ore questions to keep in m ind about this is

T Are you required to keep inventory?

T Do you have adequate storage room ?

If you are required to keep inventory or have to purchase your own products to stay active do you have theroom to safely store your products until they are sold Again, this would also go on how you and yourfam ily like things I’ve seen som e hom es that were stacked wall to wall with products and others who havesafely packed inventory in storage room s

W ebsites

T Does the com pany supply you with a website?

T If so, what does it cost?

T Can you update the web site yourself?

T Do you have to use a corporate site or can you build your own?

These are som e tricky questions to go into when you’re new to the whole business world and/or onlinebusiness world Speaking as seasoned direct sales person I’ll share som e of m y opinions If the com panyoffers you a “corporate website” (m eaning you and every other consultant of that com pany has the sam epre-form ed websites) find out if you’re able to build your own personal website or at least an entry pageleading to your corporate website This is m y own personal advice and take it how you’d like I know forsom e of you the thought of building your own website or even just one web page is a nightm are com etrue First of all, from experience as I m entioned above being unique is extrem ely im portant in a directsales business It’s very difficult to be unique/different if everyone else in your own com pany has the exactsam e websites Secondly, building a website doesn’t have to be as difficult as it sounds It really isn’t thathard If you absolutely can not build your own site (at least try first) then I would recom m end hiring to

do so One other thing that should be m entioned is that owning a website is not that expensive anym ore.You can purchase a dom ain nam e for around $7 or $8 a year and hosting for $5 or $6 a m onth If you’relooking at higher costs shop around

W ith a personal website (or sim ple entry page) you are able to track your visitors (helping in your

advertising cam paigns), start a newsletter (to build a relationship with your custom ers), hold and

announce specials, contests and/or other events, and personalize your business are just a few im portantthings to m ention

M oney Issues/Fees Hostess Credits/Rew ards

T W ho pays for the hostess credits/rewards?

Hostess credits/rewards are the things hostesses can earn by holding an online party, hom e party orbook/catalog party Som e com panies will pay for these them selves and for others the consultant is

responsible

Trang 5

T W hat are the hostess credits/rewards?

Take a look at the hostess structure and m ake sure you’re going to be able to work with it

T Does the com pany offer a decent hostess structure?

T Are there enough credits/bonuses/rewards that you are going to be able to m ake it worth the while forpossible hostesses?

Shipping & Handling Charges

T Are the shipping and handling charges reasonable?

T How long does it take to receive orders?

This is a huge issue in the direct sales industry You’ll find custom ers who aren’t willing to buy sim plybecause they don’t want to incur the added charges Be sure to find out if you’re going to be able to workwith the shipping and handling fees to be delivered to your area and how long it takes to receive yourorders

Drop Shipping

T Does the com pany offer drop shipping?

Many consultants who do a lot of business online prefer to deal with drop shippers only This cuts back onshipping and handling charges, tim e and packaging If you’re planning on doing business online you’llprobably want to look deeper into this aspect If you have a custom er who purchases an item online andyour com pany doesn’t offer drop shipping you will have to have the product shipped to you and then in turnyou’ll have to ship it to your custom er Again, this will be additional shipping charges, additional tim e andadditional packaging If you are able to keep a large am ount of inventory around at all tim es or you areplanning on selling locally only this m ay not be a problem for you Find out what is going to work best foryou

T Are orders shipped to hostesses or are you required to deliver the orders?

Som e com panies will ship hom e party orders directly to the hostesses hom e You’ll want to find out how

the com pany handles this and what works best for you Hint: You’ll find once you’ve started your business

that having to deliver the products yourself isn’t necessarily a bad thing This will give you additional time

to speak with your hostess about future parties, future orders or even possibly the business opportunity.

Order Subm itting/Com m ission Paym ents

T How are you required to subm it orders?

Som e com panies require you to send in all m onies collected for all sales and in return sending you apaym ent of your earnings/com m ission Others on the other hand such as PattysPrettyPaper.com allowyou take your com m ission off the top Here is an exam ple taken directly from the PattysPrettyPaper.comwebsite:

“Our com pensation plan is very simple and you keep your profits immediately There is no waiting for a commission check W hen you take orders from customers, you receive payment of the retail price from the customer, including any tax or shipping You then place the order with us, at the discount level of 25% from our suggested retail price, through our private consultant page on our website The difference

between what the customer pays you and the order price you place with us is your profit that you get to keep right away!”

T W ill you be paid m onthly, weekly, bi-weekly etc.?

If you are paid by com m ission checks be sure to find out when/how often will you be paid Be sure tofam iliarize yourself with the com m ission structure for each com pany that you are interested in This willsave for any confusion later and you’ll know exactly how and when you’ll be paid

T W hat does the com pany offer above and beyond norm al com m issions?

Another aspect to keep in m ind are bonuses Often direct sales com panies offer bonuses, trips, cars, cash or other incentives

T If you do have to go inactive, what is the fee to rejoin?

Trang 6

Som e com panies will charge a sm aller fee if you have to go inactive for a period of tim e as others m aycharge nothing at all or even the sam e costs you initially invested If you think this m ay be a problem atsom e tim e you’ll want to find out for sure

Are there any additional fees such as:

• Yearly Fees

• Mem ber Fees

• Renewal Fees

• Adm inistration Fees

• Hostess Credit Fees

• Booking Credit Fees

• Any other “hidden fees”

Be sure to ask as with anything there always seem s to be an extra fee for this that and the other thing

Order Paym ents

The following are a few questions to keep in m ind when inquiring about the types of paym ents m ethodsavailable

T W hat types of paym ents are accepted?

T Can you accept credit cards?

T If so, how are they processed?

T Are you allowed to accept checks, m oney orders and cash?

M inim um Orders

T Is there a m inim um am ount that m ust be purchased to place an order?

A few direct sales com panies require that the purchase be a m inim um am ount before it can be purchased.Another thing com panies m ay do is offer different shipping costs for different order am ounts For exam plesom e m ay actually lower the shipping costs if you purchase m ore This saves the com pany additionalpackaging and workers to fulfil the orders and in turn reward you by lower rates

Status

T W hat does the m anagem ent opportunity structure look like?

Basically most direct sales com pany work on management levels (these can be called various nam es).

W hat this m eans is you can start out as a Consultant and m ove up to Junior Consultant and then SeniorConsultant These of course are exam ple nam es, each com pany has their own nam es for each level youreach Each of these nam es show your status in the com pany For exam ple let’s say you start out as aConsultant and reach $5,000.00 in sales in 3 m onths then you could m ove up to Junior Consultant

Then you reach the $10,000.00 m ark and you get prom oted to Senior Consultant Another com m on way

to structure this is by your downline How m any recruits you have and the sales m ade by your team

So a few things to keep in m ind about this is

T How m uch m oney in sales do you need to m ake to get prom oted?

T How m any recruits/downline do you need to get prom oted?

Recruiting

Once again each com pany has their own nam es for each of these Recruits, downline and team m em bersare to nam e just a few Sim ply put each of those nam es m ean the sam e thing these are people who sign

up for the com pany “under you” You then becom e their team leader, recruiter or sponsor (again, there are

m any other nam es for these also) W hatever the nam es it’s still basically the sam e idea

T Do you earn com m ission from your recruits?

Som e com panies are broken down into levels For exam ple, you m ay earn 25% com m ission on all thesales you m ake Then you m ay earn an additional 5% com m ission on all the sales m ade by your

downline Som e go further and som e have som e very hard to understand com m ission structures Ask toreview the structure and if you don’t understand it be sure to ask!

Trang 7

A few m ore questions to keep in m ind

T Are there any incentives to help in recruiting?

T Does the com pany offer enough of an incentive to help you build your downline?

T W hat is offered?

T Does the corporate office pass on any party or distributor leads?

T If the com pany does pass off leads, how is it done?

T Is it done by sales m argins, seniority or sim ply by locality?

A lot of direct sales com panies will not let custom ers purchase without going though a consultant So oftensom e com panies will pass off leads to consultants that are closest to the custom er resulting in m orebusiness for the consultant

A few other questions to keep in m ind

T Does the com pany offer fundraising opportunities?

m oney and to send these things out to everyone who thinks they m ight be interested could get very costlyfor the com pany This helps to split the freebie seekers from those who are truly interested in the

business

Occasionally som e com panies like to run sign up specials where you can sign up cheaper than norm ally

or som etim es even free There’s not usually m any that offer the free offer A lot of com panies also offerways for you to earn your kit Basically how this works is you would collect orders and/or hold parties toearn your starter kit

Like I m entioned, m ost com panies include actual products or sam ple products and business literature. They also usually give options of different sized kits to allow you to choose what will fit your needs Butalso once again, each com pany offers different things The following are a couple exam ples of som e

com panies kits (Please note that these are subject to change The following examples are true at the time

of the writing of this book.)

Additional Kits

T Does the com pany offer additional kits at reduced prices?

Som e com panies offer additional kits at reduced prices to help build inventory This would be an im portantfactor to exam ine if you were planning on keeping inventory, doing hom e parties, fairs, expos etc

Support System s

T Does the com pany offer any type of support or business coaching?

T Are there any m essage boards (aka online com m unities), team m eetings or contact with other

distributors in place?

T Can you contact the corporate office with questions?

T Does the com pany offer training?

T If so, what does it cost or is it free?

Having a strong support system in place is im portant for your success You should be able to contact yourupline (sponsor, recruiter, etc.) at any tim e with any questions, com m ents and/or concerns If for som ereason your upline cannot answer your questions or you are unable to contact her you should be able tocontact a corporate office or another alternative

At DirectSalesHelpers.com we highly recom m end consultants who are actively recruiting to keep inconstant contact with their downline (recruits, downline, etc.) This builds a strong team and is very helpful

to keep consultants m otivated and interested This allows consultants to be able to find the help they need

at any tim e Be sure that the com pany you are researching has a reliable support system in place and how

it works

Taxes & Legal Requirem ents

There are m any, m any different aspects to look at for tax purposes Every state has their own rules andregulations Not only do you have to check with each com pany but also your state In this case, the m oreyou know the better Find out as m uch inform ation as you can

A few questions to keep in m ind are the following

T How are the taxes taken care of?

T W ho is responsible for Sales Tax?

T Are you required to register with the state?

T Are you required to have a Tax ID num ber?

Trang 10

Buy Back Policy

T Is there a buy back policy?

If you decide to quit your business a Buy Back Policy is where the com pany will “buy back” unsold

m erchandise that you have purchased within the past year Most com panies will pay up to 90% of yourpurchase price

Non-Com pete Clause

T Does the com pany have a non-com pete clause?

T If so, how does it read and can you work with it?

Many direct sales com panies have non-com pete clauses in place which basically m ean that once you sign

up with that particular com pany you are not allowed to sell item s from any other direct sales com panies.Som e com panies will not allow you to sell for any others while others m ay allow you as long as it is not asim ilar com pany

Returns/Guarantees

T Does the com pany have a return policy in place?

T If so, what does it look like?

T Can you easily return goods/m erchandise?

T Does the com pany offer satisfaction guarantees?

T Again, if so, what do they look like?

No one likes to deal with returned m erchandise or dam aged goods but the fact is it happens every day.Through hum an error, shipping error, unsatisfied custom er or whatever the problem m ay be you’reprobably going to encounter it one tim e or another So you m ust be assured that the com pany you will beworking with has a plan in place and one you agree with Satisfied custom ers are the life-blood of yourbusiness and if you can’t keep your custom ers satisfied you won’t have a thriving, successful business

In conclusion, the m ore research you do the better Research, research, research and just when you thinkyou’ve done enough do m ore! Too m any tim es I’ve seen recruits get com pletely excited about a

com pany and she jum ps right in without any research or com paring only to find out a m onth from joiningthat she can’t sell the products or it costs too m uch to ship to her and custom ers don’t want to pay highcosts Just because one com pany is perfect for one person doesn’t necessarily m ake it perfect for

everyone

In the Spring of 2002, six wom en began to hold hom e shows in 3 states, bringing wom en and good bookstogether Now Good Books & Com pany continues to grow, with new consultants joining weekly

If you like reading good books, and telling friends about them , this is a great opportunity to do just that.Consultants offer quality, carefully selected products – including books about living the Christian life, BibleStudies, fiction, devotionals, children and teen books, and gift item s – all related to faith and friendship Inaddition to hom e shows, we also offer online ordering, catalog shows, fundraisers, library builders forchurches, preschools and groups, and an am azing Ministry Affiliate program for churches

Good Books & Com pany was created by Lisa Bergren and Rebecca Price, who had been part of theChristian publishing industry for m any years Frustrated that excellent books often did not reach enoughreaders, they decided to help bridge the gap Hom e shows with knowledgeable consultants who could

m atch the right book with the right guest seem ed to be the answer And when good conversation aboutfaith, friends, and fam ily was added to the m ix, som ething very special occurred! Good com pany

com bined with good books based on The Good Book… Good Books and Com pany was born!

Our consultants are vibrant, active wom en of all ages and all seasons of life! Som e are m others of youngchildren who are looking for a way to supplem ent their fam ily’s incom e but still allow them to stay hom ewith their children Others are full tim e professionals who need a creative outlet for m inistry and

connections with other wom en Still others are em pty nesters who are interested in helping non-profit

m inistries and schools stock their libraries and program s with great resources W e’re as varied as all thewom en you know!

Good Books & Com pany is part of the Christian book and gift industry Our target m arket is the Christianwom an who does not regularly shop at her local Christian book store Our prim ary service is showcasingChristian books and gifts to the custom er in a hom e party atm osphere where consultants with strongproduct knowledge present a range of excellent products W e obviously cannot offer all Christian books, however we strive to bring you the best of the best, and to develop a level of trust with our custom ers thatwill enhance future sales At any given tim e, the GB&Co catalog will carry approxim ately 250 books, plusabout 30 gift item s Product cycles rotate approxim ately every five to 6 m onths Our ultim ate goal is totalcustom er service, som ething very difficult to achieve in m ost bookstores

(web-based order processing, personal website) and access to the eSuite Business Tools where you canplace and track orders, purchase prom otional item s, set up your website and choose recom m ended titlesfor your site You can advertise your GB&Co business online and offline, however you cannot use thecom pany logo without perm ission from the corporate offices The first six m onths are included in yourStarter kit After that, you are charged $6 a m onth for the GB&Co eSuite Business Tools

Profit, Inventory and M inim um s – You’ll earn 25% retail profit (your discount) on the net sales of your

shows and internet orders As you recruit and build your business through the people on your team , youalso earn bonuses based on their sales and your team volum e W e do not ask Consultants to carryinventory in their own hom es – just sam ples of books and gifts they’d like to display at their hom e shows All orders are shipped directly from our warehouse to your custom ers There are no m onthly m inim um s torem ain a consultant If you decide to take a m onth off, then that is your privilege There are however, quarterly m inim um s To rem ain active, you m ust place $500 in net retail sales in any rolling 3 m onthperiod

Ordering Inform ation – Hom e show orders, group orders and individual orders can be placed through

Trang 17

the GB&Co consultant websites There are no m inim um orders All orders have an 8% shipping andhandling fee added, and state sales tax where applicable Hostesses earn hostess credit on their totalsales This credit is offered through the com pany, not the consultant, so the consultant does not have touse any of her profit on hostess credit Most orders are shipped within 3-5 business days of being

ordered, usually sooner, so the hostess should have her m erchandise about a week after her show Orders can be shipped directly to the hostess or to the consultant Paym ent can be m ade with cash, check or credit card For hom e shows, the hostess can pay for her show with a check m ade out to theconsultant or even m ultiple credit cards The consultant can then deposit the check into her own checkingaccount and place the order using a debit card and any credit cards that were used The consultant canchoose to either pay the full am ount of the show and receive a com m ission check for the difference, orcan pay everything but the profit so she has her com m ission im m ediately
